Thanks, Rick. No, I've had this apple tv too long. Not under waranty. I think I should probably try connecting it to a stereo amp I have and just seeing what happens there with vo. It won't show movies, because with no tv connection, things flake out, sadly, but at least if the VIO remains choppy, I'll know it isn't my surround receiver. Now the fun part will be actually getting to the connections to make this happen.
