I'm not sure about needing to be connected to the net at all times. I can
test that out at some point to see what happens if connectivity is lost.
As with the camera, I haven't read anything about it sending that anywhere,
my understanding is that it uses that to map out the environment and help
keep it from running into objects. I don't notice mine running into much
stuff. I did read that they won't work in the dark, haven't tested that
since I have my scheduled for 9:00am. However, the other night I was
running it on a manual clean and it seemed to work ok. It wasn't totally
dark, so not sure how much light it actually needs.

Subject: Re: Roomba 980 with an app!
Hallo Peter,
Congrats on your new Roomba! I wonder if you can assist a little more
with some info for me? It appears that the machine works with different
sensors, one of which is the camera, which looks, primarily, at the ceiling,
to locate itself. It seems to me, from my reading about the 980, that it has
to be online, all the time, that is, with an internet connection, in order
to navigate, sending pictures up to the cloud, until it is finished
cleaning. I have heard that if it can't do this, the Roomba will not work.
Indeed, I have heard that if there is insufficient light, it will not work
either! So, do you know, will your machine work without an internet
connection?
Where I live, our broadband is severely limited and often goes off. If I
am dependent upon the net for the roomba to work for me, I shall have to
think again.
How have you found yours to be performing for you? If I might ask, have
you had one before? If so, how does it compare? I have a, slightly, defunct
Roomba 560, which could be resirrected, probably, so, would love to know if
this one is worth the hype! If the issue of the internet is as I suspect, I
will take a look at the previous version, the 880 instead.
Thanks for your feedback,
Sandy.

Ok, my unit arrived a couple of hours ago. Setting it up was quite easy.
There are a couple of really good unboxing videos on You Tube that might
help. The app has a few places where things aren't labelled the best, but
you should be able to figure it out. The basic things are all
accessible...
Fired Mr. Roboto up...you can name the unit .. And he took off. Did a
pretty decent job ...
My suggestion is to make sure you buy it from a place that will allow you
to return. With spending almost $1K, you want to make sure it does all
that you expect.

Hallo There!
OK, so I am in the market for a new robot vacuum cleaner. The latest,
from iRobot's Roomba range, is the 980 and it comes with an app! I want
to know how accessible it is. I downloaded the app, and it looks OK, but,
because I haven't, as yet, got the machine, needing to know if it will
work for me with the app, I can't tell if it is usable with VO.
So, my question is: does anyone have experience of the app and running
the 980 Roomba. Now, before you all shout at me for profligacy, I know it
costs an arm and a leg! I can only say that I have been seduced by the
hype! I have long term experience of the Roombas and love them! This new
one, not only has an app which should help with error analysis, but will
allow me to start the thing off from anywhere and, it says, it will do
the whole of one level of my house, going back to the charger for a
refuel session and then continue where it left off.
Anyway, I am almost convinced, but, with such a large outlay, just need
to know about the accessibility.
Can you help?
Sandy
