In the fall of 2011 DARPA sponsored additionally complicated tests on autonously controlled vehicles. The result of those exercises were the cars from four different groups being excepted to run from downtown San Diego to downtown San Francisco. The route included freeway and a country road driving as well as downtown street navigation. Of course, there was a human driver behind the wheel as a failsafe just in case there was a problem with anyone of these for vehicles. The results of that exercise was that all four cars made it from downtown San Diego to downtown San Francisco with only one accident – that being the fault of the other car that was driven by a human being. No, I cannot agree that self driving cars are that far off in the future.
