Kait, you are a granddaughter to be admired & treasured. I want to share my story with you. I lost my vision at age 45 following surgery. Being thrown into blindness was difficult to accept & have to deal with, everything was abruptly taken away, my independence, pride, self confidence, interests/hobbies, the beauty of nature, the smiles on the faces of family & friends…Everything! I spent 3 years cycling through the first 4 stages of grief, denial, anger, bargaining & depression, before finally reaching the fifth & final stage, acceptance. When “I” felt that “I” was close to putting a stage of grief behind me & move on to the next stage, someone in my life would say or do something that would set me back. Even though their comments or actions were said & done with the best intentions & my well being in mind- I saw the actions as them rushing me to heal, while showing me that they did not have confidence in my ability to find “My” own way to do things that would work for “Me.” Like you, my best friend of 30+ years & my parents felt that it was very important for me to learn to use a smartphone so that they could keep in contact with me & they thought that a smartphone would aid in my independence. Learning to use a smartphone was at the bottom of my “New Normal” bucket list, especially when my flip phone was still usable & would solve their problem of them needing to be in constant contact with me, because of their worries of me being alone. Labeling the microwave, stove, washer, dryer, helping to organize the kitchen food pantry, the refrigerator, the cleaning & personal care items was what I needed & wanted the most. Things that would give me a sense of independence & the feeling of accomplishment when I was able to prepare my own food, take care of my personal needs & clean my own house. Why not use a dot of puff paint to mark the answer call & some of the numbers on the dial pad on her flip phone? get her an AlexaShow & setup contacts & Alexa calling. The AlexaShow is simpler to teach, easier to learn to use, being that it works by voice commands & can do almost everything that her having a smartphone can do. She can make & accept calls, send text messages, listen to music & books, play games & have items identified for her. Leave the smartphone with voiceover on with her. Show her how to turn the phone on & how to charge the phone. Encourage her to explore the phone alone, let her interest & curiosity guide her, not what you think that she needs to learn. Be supportive by letting her try to do things on her own before you offer suggestions, advice or guidance, but do not step in & complete a task for her, unless she agrees to let you do so. I do not accept change well. I am stubborn & my pride & self independence sometimes gets in the way of me asking for help. Once my family & friends stepped back & let me take the lead in showing what my abilities were, it made their wanting to step in & help easier for me to accept. Feeling helpless & useless to oneself & to others is a very dark & lonely place to be.Don’t forget that your Grandma needs her own sunshine.
Donna My Gran is not a very receptive person, she never was but I respect that and understand why. At this time we are not set up as maybe you may be and I wish not to leave her alone without some form of assistance should she need help when I am not home. I pay for help at the moment but that will only be for a short time. All things are not in place at this time and I feel more secure knowing she can reach me. Please understand, I am pressured to have some form of continuity and safety and having a phone would be number one priority. I am reaching out to this community for any form of help it may offer. I hope this explanation will help? > thank you , > kait > > On Mon, May 3, 2021 at 1:50 PM Star Gazer <[email protected]> wrote: > May I ask why?
