Hello Kait, I think if you can convince your Grandmother to give the iPhone a try it will be a goo dthing, but I agree with Sandy and was going to recommend the Amazon Echo speakers. One advantage you have if you placed even an Amazon Dot in your Grandmother's place or maybe 2 depending on how large her place is) would be that you could "drop in" as it is called. If you have a smartphone of any type or another Echo speaker at your place and if you set the devices at your grandmother's house/apartment up with the same Amazon Account they essentially become an intercom system. We have several Echo speakers at our house and I also have one at my office which is about a mile from my home, but it really doesn't matter if it is a mile away or a thousand miles away. All speakers are set up under my Amazon account and if I am in my office and I know my wife is at home, I can simply say to my office speaker "Alexa drop in at the living room" and a few seconds later the Echo in our living room will beep a few times and then a 2-way audio channel will be open and I can talk to my wife. If both Echos are the ones with a screen that connection becomes a video connection. Once again, not saying you shouldn't try to teach your Grandmother how to use an iPhone, but the Echo Dot speakers are quite inexpensive and the iOS and Android Amazon Echo app is o fcourse free so it would be a relatively simple and inexpensive thing to also set this up. Alternatively there are a number of internet connected security cameras out there which would give you both a video and 2-way audio connection as well, the Nest Cam IQ is one of them, but it is significantly more expensive.

And me as well as it pertains to the blind community. As far as I am aware, computers are not her thing. She is aware of them but through me only.
