I recently upgraded from an iPhone 8 to the 13 pro max and I don't
miss the home button one bit. I have very little trouble going from
home to app switcher. One thing that helped me get a hang of the home
button gesture, is don't press your finger so hard on the screen when
doing the gesture.
Give the screen a very light touch with just a little bit of pressure.
If you press very hard on the screen all you'll do is be sliding your
finger around on the screen. I mostly use a braille bluetooth
keyboard called the Hable One so I don't have any trouble backing out
of menus. However, even if I'm not using my keyboard, I can back out
of menus just fine with no issues.
