Correct, pressure makes no difference although pressing down hard while you are
trying to slide up smoothly certainly isn't intuitive for me, but I just tried
it by touching at the bottom and pressing down just about as hard as I could
and still slide my finger and the app switcher came up just fine. Having said
this, a light touch is perfectly fine here.

I find at least with the case I have which isn't really very thick that back
tap does not work reliably for me. But you can also assign gestures to various
single, double, triple and quadruple finger taps and slides.
You may want to go to Settings > Accessibility > Voiceover > Commands > Touch
Gestures and swipe through the list and see if any taps are unassigned and you
could then for example assign "move to first item" to a particular tap.
In my case, I have this assigned to a single finger triple tap and I use a
single finger quadruple tap for "move to last item". Since the "back" button is
always the first item at the top left of the screen I can do a single finger
triple tap anywhere I want to find it and it will jump there. Of course you may
be OK with the gesture which is already in plaace for that, a single tap with 4
fingers in the top half of the screen or, to go to the last item, do a single
tap with 4 fingers on the bottom half of the screen. The reason why I assigned
other gestures for these two actions is because I lost my sight in an accident
involving explosives a very long time ago and I also had very bad hand injuries
and only have 3 fingers on each hand so a 4-finger tap for me means I need to
use 2 hands and it's not at all quick and easy to do and for the same reason
braille input is out of the picture for me.

I agree it takes some practice and getting used to, but I never found that
pressure made any difference, unless of course too much pressure kept the
gesture from being smooth or too little pressure meant it didn't register.

It does take a bit of practice. Your touch can't be completely light with no
pressure at all, but just a very small amount of pressure. To much pressure
deffinately does not work. I never did figure out how to do the scrub gesture.
