Hi,

sorry i wasn't detailed enough.
from the beginning, i thought darn, i don't hear anything when the ear buds are not plugged in then,
i said hum then,
i moved my right hand to the top of my head then
i scratched my head three times with my first finger then
i moved the same finger over the phone glass then
i checked if the mute switch was pushed down then
i asked someone with vision and checked that the voice settings were on then
thought someone would answer a question without coming off as an ultimate expert then
it went downhill from there
and the self appointed experts said go to the apple store.

Hi,

Since this is a list with over a thousand people, don’t you think it would be just a good thing to name the steps one has already taken in their original post so the person that wants to help doesn’t have to ask, then you reply, then they reply, etc. If anything, it would cut down on list traffic.

Bryan,

Since you obviously need assistance with your device from time to time, why
are you finding it so necessary to respond so rudely to folks who have
reached out to assist you? Don't you realize that you are burning your
bridges and therefore much less likely to get help in the future. Most
people don't forget nasty attitudes and ungratefulness such as yours very
quickly.

Just a thought.

no,

you just didn't read it.
the volume up button without ear buds only worked after holding home and
power then turning it back on.

No, it was those obvious solutions which offended Bryan so much. He has not
yet reported receiving a workable solution. The symptoms he reported,
considering that the obvious solutions were already attempted by himself,
there is a solution which nobody has mentioned. If he finally takes the
iPhone into the Apple store and meets with a genius bar rep, the rep will
most likely know the proper solution. After all, it was one of those techs
who explained that particular problem's solution to me.

I wish him luck. I will not assist him because I do not assist people who
continue in their rudeness and do not apologise for such impolite behaviour.

I used to work at IBM, and I heard this story as well. I could also offer up my own similar stories. Although I think I'm pretty savvy, I've had the

light bulb go off a few times when someone mentioned something obvious and

that got me thinking to some setting I had changed and then forgot about
or something else that seemed pretty obvious in hindsight.

A few more thoughts on this whole issue.

first, if someone is pretty particular about the suggestions they get then

maybe they have better options to get help than post a question to a list with over 1400 members. Anyone who has been on this list for any length of

time knows that we have members from the novice to the experienced. It's
also a list full of people who want to help out and support each other.

A summary of steps that were already tried would have also kept seemingly
obvious and redundant suggestions from being made.

Just using the delete key seems like it would have been more appropriate
than pointing out to the list how much "obvious" suggestions are resented.

BTW, I didn't pay attention to the solution but wasn't it something pretty

obvious, like powering off the phone or using the volume up keys when the
ear buds weren't plugged in?

I feel the same as you, Christopher. I always welcome all suggestions,
even and especially the obvious ones. When I get frustrated over a
problem, I know that I can too easily forget one of the basic, obvious
solutions.

Many years ago, I studied computer engineering for a couple years. I
ultimately changed to another field, but I will never forget a story told

to us by an engineering professor. He worked as a supervisor for a
computer installation and repair company in the 70's. One day, a
technician went out on a call. Half an hour later, the tech called and
asked for assistance, so another tech was dispatched. When my former
professor went out to see what was going on, four techs had been sent. He

got there and found the large mainframe open, every board was out with
meters showing proper functioning, and the technicians were very
confused. As he looked behind the extremely large system, he noticed that

a power cable was lying next to the socket rather than being plugged in.
So, they plugged the system back in (the power had been unknowingly
kicked out of the socket), and everything started working again properly.

I always go back to basics when I am in my correct mind. After all, it is

usually one of the basics that we accidentally overlook.

I'll try to do the same thing myself, although I may not remember who
appreciates suggestions and who doesn't. For my part, when I ask a
question on list, I'll try to mention what I've already tried, but
please send me all of your suggestions. I've seen plenty of issues on
this list solved by an obvious suggestion, and I've benefited from them myself. What may be obvious to everyone else, may be a setting I haven't

stumbled across before or may be a subtle change in how IOS 7 works
compared to IOS 6. David and all, I appreciate your help and
suggestions.

Hello Bryan,

the process of determining what may be wrong starts with checking all
of the obvious possibilities. For me, just about every possibility is
obvious. I am a trainer, and have been a beta tester and AT setup and
trainer in the past. I have no idea what you consider obvious unless
you state specifically what you have already tried.

That said, now that I know you will react negatively if I suggest
something you consider obvious, I will reframe from taking any chances
of giving you a wrong suggestion.

Holy cow, just found mute on! For the person who gave the person who
did not appreciate it the thought, you may have just fixed my
problem! Sending this to try! Thanks a bunch!
