Ron,

I'm not sure at what point VM (IIRC it *was* z/VM 5.1, which defined
larger, and separate, page and SPOOL volumes) began shipping with the
SPOOL formatted and allocated on cylinder zero. It's technically OK. But
I figure that one whole cylinder is really cheap, and if I want to relabel
the volume, place the SADUMP program it, etc. - leaving cyl zero as PERM
is, as Roger Deschner is wont to say, a **GOOD THING**. It means mucking
about with the system IBM defined and shipped - but when has that ever
stopped me? ;-)

It will be fascinating to learn what solves Cecelia's problem.

Re: DS6800 & zVM 5.1

Cecelia,

I have neither a D6800 or z/VM 5.1, but I do wonder about your
allocation of SPOL as 0 thru 3338 and PAGE as 0 thru 3338 on what
appears to be real volumes. I am wondering whether this is stepping on
the VOLSER in some fashion? I've always been careful to allocate this
space as 1 through END when adding new volumes, leaving cyl 0 alone. My
2 cents, in case it helps.

Ron

This is not early in the install process, but it is necessary to start
over then that is what I will do...

The SPOOL and PAGE volumes are the predefined areas that IBM provides
with z/VM 5.1.

q alloc spool
EXTENT EXTENT TOTAL PAGES HIGH %
VOLID RDEV START END PAGES IN USE PAGE USED

q alloc page

To generate the ALLOC maps, I linked to the full volume definition with
the directory. That is why it indicates it is a minidisk, but the
system as it as a full volume.
