Hi Kyle, Yes, I can understand that not all USB ports on modern Macs are created equal System profiler on my 27² iMac only shows two USB High-Speed Busses each with one hub and so each of these hubs already has internal Mac hardware hanging off it The IR Receiver and Built-in iSight on one hub and the Internal Memory Card Reader and BRCM2046 Hub (with the Bluetooth Controller hanging off it) on the other hub.
The situation with the MacBook Pro I find much more confusing: * There are only two external USB ports but sometimes these ports show up on a USB bus (USB1) and sometimes they show up on a USB high speed bus (USB2) * These external ports can switch busses independently of each other. * The EyeTV is obviously a USB2 device and needs to be connected to a USB high speed bus (USB2) * A given port can be showing as on a USB high speed bus (USB2) with a USB flash drive mounted but then, when I eject the drive and plug the EyeTV unit in, the port is switched to a USB bus (USB1) - and so the EyeTV software tells me to connect it to a USB2 port! * The problem is convincing the MacBook Pro to connect the port to a a USB high speed bus (USB2) and not to a USB bus (USB1) * Once the EyeTV is connected to a port AND the MacBook Pro has the port connected to a a USB high speed bus (USB2) everything works OK. * This situation is the same for either/both of the two external USB ports. I may well get a powered USB hub (although the iMac now seems to be working OK) - but if I¹m travelling light with the laptop I probably wouldn¹t want the extra weight (not so much the hub as the powerpack) whereas the actual EyeTV hybrid is small & light enough to throw in the bag.
