Hi Ronni, Yes...I delayed posting a hooray message but your malware advice seemed to work...not th culprit they mentioned but something in the same spot called Goforth or some such. Once I deleted and tried again it now seems to be fine. Though how it go there I have no idea, because I don't open stray links or download stuff either. But anyway, space returned and Sierra loaded...and thanks again for all your help!
Now if I could only get my hands on my husband's machine and finally download his photos from his Time Machine backup! But that won't be until he finished his PHD!
