Solution found. :-) Every time I need to log into iCloud on my iOS 5.1.1. device I will need to generate a new Verification Code. Then instead of using ONLY the AppleID password, I will have to add the Verification to the end of the password in one long string.
Seems to work okay. A bit fiddly, but the old device is back on track.
