The biggest "benefit" of NOT having 3-turret (or even 2-turret) droids
is that players would end up building single type units. Just put long
range weapon, short range weapon, and repair turret on the same body,
make 20 of them, and there you have it - an invincible army of droids
that repair each other while blasting everything else.

Repair towers can not be combined with weapons as I see. I think it should be impossible to combine arty (indirect weapon) with mgs and alike (direct weapons) as well.

expensive, and extra slow) body that could mount, let us say, two
turrets.

This was also my suggestion, but I don't think we should make multiple-turret support something very special, it was just not finished in the game, hence I don't see a need to only allow multiple-turret support in the late game. This was discussed on forums already, my idea was to introduce new set of bodies (probably 3 - each one for eact tech level), which would be large enough to handle multiple weapons.

T1 body - 1-2 weapons
T2 body - 2-3
T3 - could be something huge, similar to stationary fortresses we have now, defitely not for mass-production.
