I have seen similar problems that were created by
Spyware -- something most antivirus programs do
not detect. If this seems to be happening after
the browser is opened, then try running an
anti-spyware program. I use McAfee's anti-spyware and have had no problems.
If the problem was hardware related, then it
should happen regardless of when or if a certain application was being used.

Hi,
I'm having a ~really scary~ problem. Two days ago my computer started
acting up. It seems to be browser related from what I can tell so
far. What happens is that when I open my browser (so far Firefox and
IE6) my computer goes into a reboot all on it's own no matter what's open
for

Sure hate to tell you this, but I ran into a
similar problem two months ago and it turned out
to be a hardware failure. I ended up installing
a new motherboard, processor, and memory. By the
time I had been through all the troubleshooting,
etc., I had had so many spontaneous reboots that
XP was pretty much hosed, so I ended up taking
it down to bare metal and reinstalling XP, then
SP2, all the updates, etc. My problem was not
identical; it didn't happen merely from starting
the browser (any browser), but as soon as I
tried to scroll the window, blip! she was
gone--spontaneous reboot. I tried all the usual
suspects, turned off hardware acceleration, used
msconfig to minimize startup programs, etc.
Although it was a right pain in the ass doing
the system rebuild, I was a tad fortunate in
that my C: drive is used almost exclusively for
the OS and such programs as firewall, antivirus,
etc. Everything else, including My Documents, is
on one of my other logical drives. Formatting C:
and reinstalling, therefore, didn't hit my
productivity apps. After the reinstall I just
went back and reinstalled all my apps into their
existing folders so that Windows could find
them. I must say, I'm almost grateful it
happened, since in the process the upgrade
approximately doubled my system speed, and it is
now Gibraltar solid and stable. Would I go
through it again? Nope, not voluntarily. But now
that I'm looking back at the upgrade and rebuild
process instead of forward to it, I'm kinda glad
I was forced into an upgrade that was long overdue anyway.
Cheers,
Scott
