I've been carefully avoiding this thread, but I can't stand it any longer <G>.
The blackmail issue is entirely irrelvant. The majority of US Presidents in
the past 50 years who have had control over the nuclear trigger have had
extramarital affairs (in JFKs case, multiple). To think that the threat of
blackmail could impair someone's ability to make judgements about whether
or not to launch nuclear warheads is, frankly, absurd.
There is only one issue that is important: is perjury about private,
consensual sexual relations an impeachable offense? (the obstruction of
justice and subornation of perjury charges are too weak to be considered
significant) Clearly, Clinton perjured himself by any reasonable definition
of the word.
If you do, you should favor impeachment. If you do not, then no impeachable
behavior has occurred and we should recognize this whole bizarre situation
for what it is: an attempt by a married man to hide an extramarital affair.
I am against impeaching Clinton. I do not think he should resign. What he
did was foolish in the extreme, and hurt his family very much. But it is
not an impeachable offense in my opinion (though ultimately that can only
be decided by Congress, according to the rules set down in our
Constitution). Clinton's mindset going into the Jones depostion was that he
was battling his political enemies; the conservative right who were funding
Jone's lawasuit, which was dismissed as being entirely "without
foundation". He did not want to make things easy for them, they were
pursuing entirely political purposes in an attempt to damage him
politically. I would have done the same.
Then Starr came along and saw an opportunity to do more damage, since he
couldn't come up with anything else after 4 years and $40 million. The man
disgusts me. Clinton saw Starr as a political opponent as well.
Anyone who wants to comment on my position is advised to email me directly.
I really think we should take this thread off-list.
