If you don't care about full compatibility, you can use colored cell backgrounds: 1. Create a 2 pixel wide cell that spans table height. 2. Insert 2 pixel transparent gif to ensure cell stays open. 3. Set bg color of cell in <TD> www.mozilla.org uses this approach for the lines that run down both sides of the page, it you want to borrow some ideas.
