Not sure how you need to partition in FreeBSD, but in Linux you only
need a root and swap partition. Any others are optional.

I have been using Linux for about 18 months on a co-located server
running Red Hat Linux with just about all of my administration being
done remotely using Telnet. Red Hat does come with some gui
management tools, but I found it easier, and more pracitical, to
adminsiter the machine remotely using a charactor based shell account.

the distributions come with basically the same programs compiled from
the same source, the biggest difference is in Kernal. The big
advantage I have seen with Linux is the larger install base which
gives you more people to ask for help and there are more people to
write the drivers sooner for the new wiz-bang hardware which comes
out.
