If I had a bad sector on a production machine I would replace it as
soon as possible. A Command line function could mark the sectors bad.
Disk druid (comes with RH anyway), runs from a command line and can
resize your partiion and add another, but you probably would want to
add another disk drive, which you could not do remotely. :-)
Configuring the other disk drive to be your "/home" or "/usr", then
moving the data over and mounting it is trivial without gui, but
probably something which you would not be doing remotely anyway.
On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with a gui interface.
Having gui <b>in addition</b> to command line could make either O/S
appeal to a wider audience. As long as the gui is writing flat,
editable text files files in "/etc" (the Unix equiv of the "registry")
one could use whichever tool is easiest at the moment.
As an example, when building a new kernel RH Linux has a "make
Config" (command line) and a make Xconfig (GUI). I have used both,
but it much easier to go back and fix something using the GUI
interface which allows random access of the attributes than the
sequential access of the command line function.
I went with Linux for a few reasons. The biggest was that I had a
Linux guru to help me. If I had a FreeBSD guru things might have
been different. My reason for the reply was just to set the record
straight.
And I DO like this quote!
