Hi all,
Did I ever get a bargain this week-end. I went to a garage sale I happened
upon. My husband was looking at a computer and the lady told him he could
take the whole thing for $5. We looked at each other and said why not . . . .
It has a dot matrix printer that's built like a tank. We were hoping it was
at least a 386, but figured it was a 286 that we could grab the floppy drives
out of. Well . . . it turned out to be a 486 DX/2 66 with a Seagate 250 or so
MB hard drive, 4 MB RAM, and a color monitor. It has a tape drive, a 3.5
floppy and a 5.25 floopy. AND, there's either a 1400 or 2800 baud modem in
it. It all works fine! We're thrilled! It only has a 16 color video card
and no sound card, but who cares? $5!!!
We're trying to determine if we should make this one our Linux machine, or
maybe use our other old computer. It used to be a 486DX2/50, but we gave it
one of those new upgrade processors so it's about a 100 Mzh something now. It
has a WD 1.6 MB hard drive, which might be better than the 250 or so MB HD.
Any suggestions on which to use for Linux, and which to give the kids?
Also, not knowing much about the innards of computers yet (I'm learning on the
job), there's a gold square thing just lying inside the box. Could that be a
heat sink or something?
I couldn't believe these people, though. They left all the software
installed, including all the personal and financial info on their 2700+
customers. I bet they'd be happy. Needless to say, it's going to go bye-bye.
Thanks,
Linda Wishman
