Hi
We are moving several hundred email lists from Majordomo to Lyris on
another server.
Lyris has perl scripts to both import the membership and the archives once
the lyris verion of the list has been created.
I think that even this list has moved addressess before and others I've
been on have. Al, what process did you follow?
We are trying to decide on the mechanics of what we should do when we move
a (or 5 or 10 or 100) list from one server to another.
Here are some of the issues.
The new list will have a new email address, do you just tell the existing
list members of the new address to be active immediately, midnight, next
week at 2pm... send the message using the old list or the new list? Add a
header message to remind them of the change in each message for a few weeks?
Do you put a redirection alias in the aliases file on the majordomo server
for a week? or just let it fail to find the old list.
Do you bother trying to deal with the problem of people trying to subscribe
to the old non-existent list. There are two problems here. One is the
chance that someone will subscribe during the change over. The other is
making sure that all the places on the web that have the wrong subscription
info are also fixed.
Is it possible to modify majordomo's "list doesn't exist" message. I
suppose I could hack the perl!
Most of the new lists have been created so we are now at the point of
making the swap. As many of the members of the lists are on several lists
we run, we also have the problem of them assuming that all have been moved
when on a few may have been done at a particular time. Their fault I know,
but we all spent lots of time trying to stop users making "mistakes" :)
Anyway... some comments from those who have moved active lists would be
appreciated.
thanks
Bruce
