I agree with Suzanne. I work as a contractor and do lots of interviews. Bad
interviews are bad signs.
If the interviewer is clueless, or is asking questions from a list that they
got out of the Wall Street Journal, or the questions are random, then they
don't know what they want, and it's downhill from there. It's also a bad
sign when the interview has little to do with their project and your skill
set.
It may be that they've already decided on someone and need to interview two
more (their manager wants three interviews). Or they truely are clueless.
Let us know if they offer you the job.
There are good ways to turn the tables in an interview. One should take
control of the interview. Managing is their main job, so managers are good
at managing, but they only interview people occassionally, so very often,
managers are bad at interviewing.
Nick Corcodillo wrote Ask the Headhunter: Reinventing the Interview (200
pgs., $15, at www.amazon.com or any bookstore.) It's an excellent analysis
of interviewing and presentations. He turns the interview inside out and
replaces it with a strategy for interviewing. He's a recruiter and
accustomed to preparing candidates for interviews. It's not for newbies. If
you have 5-10 years of job experience, you'll get a lot out of this book.
Strongly recommended.
