I love start ups because that is the only place you can really get to do
what you can do. Payment... well... you need to be careful about, and be
willing to walk out because of.
There are a few mega corporations out here that neither I, nor a
lot of shops will work with because they don't pay on time. Yes, Mega
corps! Never be so eager to work that you warp your judgment. If you
have doubts about whether a handshake is enough, then no amount of
paperwork will help you.

Could very well be, but that does not, in itself, mean you should say
no. When at a start-up, I often ask about their marketing plans. If they
are not reasonable, I am not interested. The money has to come from
somewhere, and that somewhere is the customer. If they are deluded,
running on fumes of technology... then the only reason to work for them is
what you can learn. In some cases, that is well worth the loss, but not
usually.
The most important "pay" you will get is what you learn. Good
references are secondary. The real cash, though it keeps the wheels
turning, is but a distant third -- if you don't have the first two, you
will not get the third for long! You need "enough" of all three.
It is by mistakes that true wisdom accumulates. Make enough small
mistakes quickly, and you will soon be wise. Play it too safe, and you
will become stale.
