Hey, does anyone know how to change the timeout on ftp?

I have redhat at work (ah ... I am the default sysadmin on it) and I
don't know where I can change the timeout. I log in via ftp and I
always get timedout. I know it can be changed but I have searched
high and low and I have not found an answer.
