I like the splash as well as the new design proposed ... my suggestions build on Derek's a bit.
I believe we should build everything into a verb-noun assembly. Thus the verb has a context by which it is applied... Such as: Download OpenSolaris (Go directly to downloads do not pass go, do not collect $200 dollars ... Emphasis on download and less on OpenSolaris - I don’t think they need to see OpenSolaris.Com in the screen, nor OpenSolaris.Org in the screen - we should be a unified presence although content may be different based on the TLD assignment. We need to provide clear redirection on any page.) Get Source Code (For the brave people out there) Make Contributions (Go to the community pages with an intro on how to contribute in each of the significantly defined ways, and point them to the projects, groups, etc.) Find Help (Go to an extended / advanced search engine page that will traverse the world and assist in finding where an answer may lay) Discuss Experiences (Go straight to discussions where an individual can provide input or challenge input of others or just read the threads) Each of these would have content to guide visitors in achieving their goal during the visit... I also believe in having a quick simple search on every page. Many people get lost in the current mess, and there is no doubt messes of pages will always exist, especially in a growing and thriving environment. --Ron -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Marty Duey Sent: Wednesday, April 23, 2008 10:42 AM To: Derek Cicero Cc: [email protected] Subject: Re: [website-discuss] May splash page On 4/22/2008 6:17 PM, Derek Cicero wrote: > All, > > As a follow-up to Michelle's earlier email about the splash page for > May, here is the current thinking for the launch. > > http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/website/splash2/ Good stuff, Derek. Tweaks I would recommend are: Remove "I want" or "I need" and start with a verb, e.g., Learn about OpenSolaris, Get the source. > > The idea is to introduce opensolaris.com as the place to download the > binary and to receive end-user help, with more substantial development > issues being directed to opensolaris.org. Expanding on this, it makes sense to point individuals interested in things other than source and contributing to projects to opensolaris.com. That would put links to learn, help, download/use, on the opensolaris.com side. > > Each of the links on the .org side would go to new landing page of > existing materials that Michelle is putting together. We're doing something similar with an "OpenSolaris Initiative" for the Sun Partner Advantage Program. This will be a place where information about OpenSolaris from wide ranging sources are presented in a concise and efficient manner. We're not necessarily creating new material, but providing quick access to what already exists based on the individual's or company interest > > The opensolaris.org graphic would take the user to the current .org home > page. > > Any existing bookmarks to opensolaris.org/os/ would still be valid. > > The opensolaris.com graphic will go to that home page, as shown here: > > http://www.gnome.org/~gman/opensolaris-new/index.html > > Comments welcome. > > Derek > -- _/_/_/ Marty Duey _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ Partner Development Manager _/_/_/ _/ _/ _/_/ _/ Partner Marketing _/ _/ _/ _/ _/_/ Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _/_/_/ _/_/_/ _/ _/ Direct: 303.223.6141 Internal: x69342 M I C R O S Y S T E M S _______________________________________________ website-discuss mailing list [email protected] No virus found in this incoming message.
