Hi Ron,
Thanks so much for these detailed comments, my replies inline.

I believe we should build everything into a verb-noun assembly. Thus the
verb has a context by which it is applied...
Such as:
Download OpenSolaris (Go directly to downloads do not pass go, do not
collect $200 dollars ... Emphasis on download and less on OpenSolaris - I
don’t think they need to see OpenSolaris.Com in the screen, nor
OpenSolaris.Org in the screen
Do I understand you to be saying that we should not have the text
'opensolaris.org' and 'opensolaris.com' on the splash page as they
currently appear? Or am I misunderstanding? Maybe you mean that we
shouldn't redirect to opensolaris.com when user selects 'Download'?
Thanks for any clarification you can give.
- we should be a unified presence although
content may be different based on the TLD assignment. We need to provide
clear redirection on any page.)
Sorry, I don't know what TLD assignment is. Can you talk about your
vision for 'unified presence' a little more? I agree with this theory
completely, and I'm pretty concerned about confusion related to two sets
of branding, so I welcome any additional thoughts you have.
Get Source Code (For the brave people out there)
Make Contributions (Go to the community pages with an intro on how to
contribute in each of the significantly defined ways, and point them to the
projects, groups, etc.)
In your opinion, what are the top ways to contribute that we should
introduce? The page I drafted covers the following: innovations, code,
documentation, testing, translations, advocacy, and country portals. Any
help is appreciated.
Find Help (Go to an extended / advanced search engine page that will
traverse the world and assist in finding where an answer may lay)
Interesting, I have a google custom search I could modify for this
purpose. This brings up a question about difference in perception of
terminology with regard to get vs. find. Maybe this is the split we need
to make 'get support' and 'find information'. Not sure..
Discuss Experiences (Go straight to discussions where an individual can
provide input or challenge input of others or just read the threads)
This is not a top-level item that we have considered, except in an
earlier draft I wanted a set of links on the front page not only to
discussions, but also user groups, chats, universities, and forums. The
feedback suggested the links were too confusing. If others agree with
you, we should resurrect this idea.
Each of these would have content to guide visitors in achieving their goal
during the visit... I also believe in having a quick simple search on every
page. Many people get lost in the current mess, and there is no doubt
messes of pages will always exist, especially in a growing and thriving
environment.
Right, the current splash page draft doesn't have registration or
search. This is something we can consider also. I will at least add it
to the current draft and see what folks think.
Thanks again for your time,
Michelle

All,
As a follow-up to Michelle's earlier email about the splash page for
May, here is the current thinking for the launch.

Good stuff, Derek. Tweaks I would recommend are:
Remove "I want" or "I need" and start with a verb, e.g., Learn about
OpenSolaris, Get the source.
The idea is to introduce opensolaris.com as the place to download the
binary and to receive end-user help, with more substantial development
issues being directed to opensolaris.org.
Expanding on this, it makes sense to point individuals interested in
things other than source and contributing to projects to
opensolaris.com. That would put links to learn, help, download/use, on
the opensolaris.com side.
Each of the links on the .org side would go to new landing page of
existing materials that Michelle is putting together.
We're doing something similar with an "OpenSolaris Initiative" for the
Sun Partner Advantage Program. This will be a place where information
about OpenSolaris from wide ranging sources are presented in a concise
and efficient manner. We're not necessarily creating new material, but
providing quick access to what already exists based on the individual's
or company interest
The opensolaris.org graphic would take the user to the current .org home
page.
Any existing bookmarks to opensolaris.org/os/ would still be valid.
The opensolaris.com graphic will go to that home page, as shown here:

Comments welcome.
Derek
