This doesn't sound correct. If you did well in the earlier scenarios,
you should be well positioned to do well in the current one. The issue
is when you win the scenarios without doing well.

I noticed that you mentioned about developing a mix of units good for a
particular scenario but having problems later when you needed upgraded units
that weren't in that mix. That seems like a mistake from the get go. Players
should be trying to develop a mix of upgraded units right from the first
scenario even ones that aren't optimized for those scenarios in order to give
you flexibility later.

I am also not convinced of you claim of being locked into upgraded units
when you don't have enough gold. Even though the cost of recalling upgraded
units is comparable to recruiting new ones, they are a lot more expensive
to maintain. I have been able to win gold tight scenarios with mostly
fresh recruits when I couldn't using mostly recalled upgrades. (I didn't
like having to let units get killed, but that was necessary in order to
win.)
