Yes, and I'm not comfortable with the idea of veting people myself.
Committee members have discussed this sort of thing previously in regard to
membership applications and it's something I think we have to be very, very
careful about and remember that Wikimedia Australia is not Wikipedia and
there are plenty of reasons perfectly legitimate people may want to get
involved with and support the Chapter but who aren't WMF editors, though I
do recognise the reality that there are people out there who get entertain
value from trolling us, but I would prefer to deal with them - if we ever
did open up website editing - by quickly blocking/banning people who cause
problems. John included the qualification of "where applicable" but how do
you determine when it's applicable? How do you know if someone who says they
have no on-wiki identity *really has no on-wiki identity* and has simply
never edited a WMF project or that they're career trolls who don't want to
admit that their "on-wiki identities" involve a dozen banned accounts. I
also don't like the idea of applying tighter strictures to non-members than
members (and lets face it, $40 isn't a prohitive amount for someone intent
on trolling us). I just don't see how veting can be done fairly and without
harming genuine people who just want to support us.
