I'll leave that to you to get busy googling.... hmm, I just did a search on it and can't find a proper definition. In a nutshell, a smart relay is another mail server that will accept email from you for your entire domain and send it on. It basically accepts mail and deals with routing it to it's destination. Your mail server would deliver to the smart relay, generally speaking your isp's mail server, which would then send your mail onwards. This used to be used a lot for offices that had a dialup connection to the internet but had their own mailserver. The companies mail server would queue mail up for the office and then dialup say every 10 minutes and deliver mail to the smart relay. This has the advantage that you don't need a static ip address for your mail server and will generally allow legitimate email to get past spam filters that block based on ip address or dialup (or broadband) dynamic ip address. Now adays, you'd likley use this when running your own mailserver on a broadband connection with only a dymanic ip address. -- Harondel J.
