Try booting into safe mode. Start hitting the F8 key just after the BIOS finishes it's thing, and just before the XP boot screen comes up. It's a little tricky if you have never done this before. If the XP boot screen comes up, you were too late. Just keep trying until you get the Startup Menu with the first item being Safe Mode. But it would be a good idea for your son to send you the XP CD since it may be needed at times.

Dear folks-I sure hope you can help me. I am running win XP on a white box computer using an Asus P4V8X-Mx mb. I'm not sure how much ram is in there. My son, who built the computer took of for CA early today with all the disks so I have no system disk. Problem is this. The machine will not boot to windows. It goes as far as the splash screen for the mb and then it goes black with a flashing _ about 3 lines from the top of the screen. I went into the bios and checked to see that everything was ok. Enabled and disabled some things and tried again-no good. I set it to boot from the HD and that did not work...
