Hi Gary-You are correct. It does not get to the GUI. The bios shows that everything is ok and all detected and it working order. I won't have access to the OS disk till next Sunday when my son comes home but I did go to the link you provided and I d/l the boot info for the A drive. I'm going to try it again-fingers crossed. The thing is I can get to an A prompt by putting the mb cdr in the cd drive-very odd because it does not go any further. I figured if I had the correct syntax for a command prompt drive change it might get me to the point where I could get into safe mode. Thanks for the quick reply. Regards, bk

Andy already explained how to use the F8 key to get into Windows Safe
Mode, but frankly it sounds to me like the boot process is not even getting to
that point. Either your Windows system files are corrupt, or there is a
hardware failure (HD or HD controller). Does the BIOS report the existence of the
hard drive? Eventually you'll need the Windows XP CD to do further
troubleshooting and repairs.
