If the mb cdr is fat32 and the c drive is ntfs, you will not be
able to "see" it or get to it. Is there a setting in the bios
to turn off the mb splash screen? That way you should be able
see what is going on as the machine boots. mb splash screens
are nice but it hides the info usually displayed as the machine
boots. Also, make sure there is NO cd in the cd drive(s) when
you try to boot.

Hi Gary-You are correct. It does not get to the GUI. The bios
shows that everything is ok and all detected and it working
order. I won't have access to the OS disk till next Sunday
when my son comes home but I did go to the link you provided
and I d/l the boot info for the A drive. I'm going to try it
again-fingers crossed. The thing is I can get to an A prompt
by putting the mb cdr in the cd drive-very odd because it
does not go any further. I figured if I had the correct
syntax for a command prompt drive change it might get me to
the point where I could get into safe mode. Thanks for the
quick reply.
