The file MSVCR71.DLL is a Microsoft Visual C Runtime library version 7.1 engine
(hince the filename MSVCR71.DLL) which is a core component and is used by
Windows, Office 2002, 2003, Microsoft Visual Studio.NET 2002, 2003 and 2005 of
which have C++.NET. It also used by other Microsoft and other non-microsoft
applications as well.

Windows XP, WIndows, Microsoft and non-Microsoft applications need this file
to control and to display the windows scroll bars, buttons, drop-down menus,
mouse events ect., all the GUI elements that Windows needs to enable the user
to work with windows.

I susspect that since this MSVCR71.DLL is used by Office 2000 and latter
versions
you may have an Office or other Microsoft application install that may be
corrupt and is in need of repair by running Office setup and selecting repair
installation. This should restore the MSVCR71.DLL file in its correct location
which is C:\Windows\System32\.

Older vrsions of Office 97 and lower required that this file be placed within
other application folder locations but After Office 2000 this changed to
C:\Windows\System32 as the default and master location and is as such.
Microsoft finally did this to avoid the phenomena known to programmers as "DLL
Hell" which is a weird phenonmena that causes the system and applications to go
haywire as a result of having too many different versions of the file copied or
installed to many different locations on a Windows PC.

Try running the repair from the Office or other Microsoft application setup
program to restore that file. Copying the file can be done but I would advise
against it since it can overwrite a previous version of the same file and break
some other applicaions that rely on it for proper operations. Microsoft has in
the past as in the future released so many versions of the same file that its
sometimes hard to tell which is which. The only way to try to tell the
diference is by the date stamp but even that alone isn't enough to varify the
version of that file.

A friend has handed me his Sony Vaio laptop for some help. He installed Pest
Trap about 4 days ago and has now found a number of applications do not work.
When I checked these applications they all return a cannot find MSVCR71.dll
message. When I checked MSFT they tell me this is a C++ component (?). They
also suggest it needs to be in the directory files of each application + the
system directory. Can someone help me out with this process? Also I would do
a simple restore to before Pest Trap was installed but I get the error message
there also.
