As it happens both machines, the faulty one and the good one, belong to 
the same client !  I built five of these machines for them,  a little 
over a year ago.

It was just convenient to pull the cpu from the adjacent machine while 
on site.  Now they are both in the workshop !

I can check that !  As far as I am aware all these machines have the 
same mainboard revision and bios !

Yes I have seen that issue as well !  Auto detect or 504Mb hard drive, 
even if you put in the right settings.
