Linux has come a very long way in the past year !   Although I would 
agree some hardware is and always will be totally unsupported !

As far as hand editing files is concerned its no different to editing 
the registry in Wins.   In fact I would suggest that its easier !  At 
least you don't have obscure unfathomable strings to hide things in !
