I've never had problems with win4lin when upgrading the kernel. I grab
the new kernel, apply all the patches I want, including the win4lin patch
(which is generic -- it applies fine to the official source code version)
and compile. Once it's built and installed, I reboot, and win4lin still
works.

This install program does not patch the kernel for you; it simply tries to
find a prebuilt kernel that matches your distro. If you're running a
custom kernel, then you need to patch the kernel yourself. The installer
only can setup up the kernel properly if you're running some distro's
stock kernel. Sounds to me like you've either built a kernel yourself, or
applied an updated kernel rpm that win4lin hasn't built an quivalent
patched kernel. There's very little Netraverse can do about this. If you
can't get a match, then you'll have to build one yourself. This is not a
problem for most people, because they run stock kernels.

As for gnome, well it's a big, bloated monster. But complaining this way
is a bit like complaining that every windows program ships with it's own
(special-purpose) dlls.
