The pithy ruminations from "David W. Botsch" on
<Re: [Win4Lin-users] win4lin 3.0 upgrade brouhaha> were:
=> I believe the question was "why not"?
=>
=> Personally, I am quite unhappy about having to shell out more money just to upgrade
my kernel (a
=> small kernel upgrade fee, tho, would be acceptable).
=>
=> Netraverse would seem to be guilty of "pulling a Microsoft" in the worst way.
=>

As someone who recently (~3 months ago) purchased Win4Lin 2.0, I think that
most of the comments on this thread are way off base. Given the complexity of
the product, the functionality of the product, the low cost, and the dependence
on a kernel over which Netraverse has no influence or insider knowledge, I
think that there's nothing wrong with paying a upgrade fee! Frankly, I think
that $59 for the full product is a very good deal. Sure, having just bought
v2.0, I want to get 3.0 for free. However, I wouldn't expect to get 4.0 and so
forth for free, just as I think expecting to go from 1.0 to 3.0 for free is
excessive. I think there should be some reduced-price upgrade path, but the
threads I've seen so far sound as if Netraverse is doing something terrible,
yet no pricing has even been set!

Sure, it seems like there's something unfair because of the short timelines.
However, what I see as important here isn't just the timeframe, but the scope
of the changes from 2.0 to 3.0.

Marketing aside, I can understand that there are significant technical reasons
why the enhancements found in 3.0 won't be back-ported to the 2.2.x kernel
series.
