The Merge project has a very long history (back to 1983, IIRC, with John
Nunneley & David Peet involved even then?) and there have never been
many details released, that I can find.  (There are some early patents
by Popek & co at Platinum - see www.winehq.com for details)

And the first we knew about win4lin was an announcement to the wine
lists some 2 years ago that the linux port was in beta - then silence
until last year. And all through we've been promised more technical
detail but nothing has come of it...

So, much as I'd like to blame the present hiatus on Netraverse' search
to maximise profit rather than satisfy customers, this way of working
has been characteristic of the project for many years. 

(I suspect it's partly tied up with Popek/Platinum's residual
intellectual-property rights?
