The difference here is that Zenoss is still entering maturity. It's like test driving a car while its still at the factory then complaining because the roof wasnt put on yet. You cant judge quality until its completed.
Zenoss is definitely a fancy sports car being hand built. It may not be amazing right now but once its finished and ready to roll off the lot its going to be a serious contender. You couldnt tell it was young? Even with all the numerous signs of a maturing project? Low version numbers, overly "enterprise" website, only a few people in the forums for support including the founder of the company... How about the fact that they are so friendly here? If you want some rock solid solution with yesterdays features and ideas Zenoss is not for you. Zenoss is really the first inheritance model based solution that seems to do things right. Does it need polishing? Sure, but is it some hobby project? Certainly not. Any programmer will find themselves in heaven with the kind of API Zendmd provides. These kinds of projects are more like tools than solutions. With some other "solutions" you can be incompetent and throw money at the problem and regurgitate whatever the tool tells you. With "tools" like zenoss they give you a wonderful platform and you kinda have to construct your monitoring environment. You cant just install and expect to have it tuned to your needs and environment. You actually have to know something but the payoff is much better because only you know your needs exactly. Other tools might be close but you can dial in with the kind of customization Zenoss allows. Come back in a year or two if its not already blown up. They're getting close. I use it every day and my personal install is already blowing the pants off any other tool used in my environment here.
