 CAMP BUSHMASTER, Iraq - In this dry desert world near Najaf, where the Army V
 Corps combat support system sprawls across miles of scabrous dust, there's an
 oasis of sorts: a 500-gallon pool of pristine, cool water.

 It belongs to Army chaplain Josh Llano of Houston, who sees the water
 shortage, which has kept thousands of filthy soldiers from bathing for weeks,
 as an opportunity.

 ''It's simple. They want water. I have it, as long as they agree to get
 baptized,'' he said.

Fucking parasite. Wonder if a chaplain ever got fragged?

I remember being awakened by my buddy out in the desert with, Hey, McHugh, wake
up. Your father's here. Sure right, but I got out of my fart sack to see what
the prank was. Turns out there's this bear of priest named LTC McHugh there to
see me. He was the brigade chaplain. I had a laugh, but still felt like
fragging his ass for wasting good sack time.

Here's what I got from AP today:

Dolphins to clear mines from port

CAMP AS SALIYAH, Qatar (AP) -- You've heard of bomb-sniffing dogs, but
mine-sniffing dolphins?

Coalition forces have brought in two specially trained bottle-nosed Atlantic
dolphins to help ferret out mines in the approaches of the port of Umm Qasr,
Maj. Gen. Victor Renuart of the Central Command said Tuesday.

The dolphins will help clear the way for the shipment of humanitarian aid to
allied-held southern Iraq, Renuart said.

The dolphins, named Makai and Tacoma, wre flown into Umm Qasr by US Navy
helicopters Tuesday night and were expected to begin searching for mines today,
according to pool reports.

The dolphins are taught to avoid touching the mines, which might cause them to
explode, said Capt. Mike Tillotson, a Navy bomb disposal expert. He said there
was little risk to animals doing this kind of work.

The biggest hazard could come from other indigenous dolphins in the waters of
Umm Qasr.

Dolphins are territorial and there is a fear local dolphins might drive the
interlopers out, causing them to go AWOL.

[AP picture of handler and dolphin with a small camera on its right fin jumping
out of the water]

Sgt. Andrew Garrett watches K-Dog, a bottle nose dolphin attached to Commander
Task Unit 55.4.3, leap out of the water while training near the USS Gunston Hall
in ther Persian Gulf. Commander Task Unit 55.4.3 is a multinational team from
the US, UK and Australia conducting deep/shallow water mine clearing operations
with the dolphins to clear shipping lanes for humanitarian relief.

(I remember Butler when I was at DLI. He was quite an avid runner
and qualifed second for DLI's men's team in the Army Ten Miler back
in 2000.)

Probe of officer's letter continues
DLI colonel heads investigation
By KEVIN HOWE
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Investigation of an Air Force officer's criticism of President Bush
in a letter to the editor has been turned over to his immediate
superior at the Presidio of Monterey.

Lt. Col. Steve Butler was serving as vice chancellor for student
affairs at the Defense Language Institute when he wrote the letter,
published in The Herald on May 26, which accuses Bush of allowing the
Sept. 11 attacks to occur for political reasons.

In his letter, which is attracting national media attention, Butler
wrote that it was sleazy and contemptible for the president to
withhold information from the public to help himself politically.

Butler was suspended from his duties at the Monterey language school
following publication of his letter, which could constitute a
violation of Article 88 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
Article 88 bars any commissioned officer from using contemptuous
words about the president, Congress and various other officials.

The investigation has been turned over to Air Force Col. Jeff
Johnson, deputy commandant of the language school and Butler's
immediate superior and rating officer, Air Force spokeswoman Valerie
Burkes said Tuesday.

It would be inappropriate to make further comments, Burkes said
from her office at the Pentagon.

An Article 88 offense is punishable by a maximum of confinement for
one year, dismissal from the service and forfeiture of all pay and
allowances.

Guidelines for prosecuting the offense note that expressions of
opinion made in a purely private conversation should not ordinarily
be charged, but giving broad circulation to a written publication
containing contemptuous words of the kind made punishable by this
article, or the utterance of contemptuous words of this kind in the
presence of military subordinates, aggravates the offense.

The truth or falsity of the statements is immaterial, the
guidelines say.

The last actual court martial for violation of the article occurred
in 1965, when Army 2nd Lt. Henry Howe was convicted of using
contemptuous words against President Lyndon Johnson and of conduct
unbecoming an officer after taking part in a demonstration against
the Vietnam War. He was discharged and sentenced to two years of hard
labor.

In similar cases in 1999, two Marine officers, one active, the other
a reservist, received administrative punishment for published
writings criticizing President Bill Clinton following the Monica
Lewinsky scandal.

The Oct. 19, 1998, Navy Times published an editorial by Marine Corps
Maj. Shane Sellers headlined Time to Send Clinton to the Showers,
in which Sellers called Clinton a criminal and an adulterous liar.

The Oct. 22 Washington Times published another editorial by Marine
Corps Reserve Maj. Daniel Rabil called Please Impeach my Commander
in Chief, which described Clinton as morally defective, integrity-
impaired, a lying draft-dodger, a moral coward and a spoiled
leftist.

Burkes said Butler has been sent on temporary duty to Travis Air
Force Base near Fairfield, but remains assigned to the Presidio.

Butler has not commented publicly since the investigation began. His
wife, Shelly, said her husband plans to retire in the next few weeks
after 24 years in the Air Force.

-Caveat Lector-

Restorative Justice
By Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman

Corporate and white collar crime have landed on the front pages of the
nation's agenda-setting newspapers.

Yesterday, the New York Times ran a front-page article reporting that
the last decade has seen a marked increase in accounting and corporate
infractions, fraud in health care, government procurement and
bankruptcy.

Maybe. Maybe not.

We don't know.

One reason we don't know is that while the federal government tracks
street crime through the Federal Bureau of Investigation's yearly Crime
in the United States report, it refuses to compile a similar report for
corporate and white collar crime.

It could just be that the press and prosecutors are finally noticing, in
the wake of Enron and Andersen and Global Crossing, what has been true
for most of this century -- that corporate and white collar crime
inflicts far more damage on society than all street crime combined.

And yet, the nation's prison system is filled with street criminals.

We are tough on street criminals.

We engage in negotiations with corporate and white collar criminals.

Should we level the playing field by putting more white collar criminals
in prison?

Maybe. Maybe not.

What about leveling the playing field by taking more seriously the idea
of negotiating with corporate and street criminals?

This is an idea touted by John Braithwaite, a professor at the
Australian National University in Canberra, Australia, considered to be
one of the world's premiere corporate and white collar criminologists.

In his most recent work, Restorative Justice, Responsive Regulation
(Oxford, 2002), Braithwaite comes down hard on retributive justice.

It doesn't work for street crime.

And, he says, it doesn't work well for white collar crime.

Braithwaite argues that throwing people in prison because they deserve
it is a failed criminal justice policy.

For all the wrong reasons, says Braithwaite, corporate crime enforcement
is restorative, while street crime enforcement is retributive.

Some of us began to wonder whether we were wrong to see our mission as
making corporate crime enforcement more like street crime enforcement
through tougher sanctions, Braithwaite writes. Instead, we began to
wonder whether street crime enforcement might be more effective if it
were more like corporate criminal enforcement.

What does Braithwaite mean by retributive justice?

That you ought to punish wrongdoers because they deserve to be
punished, he says. Retributive justice is the notion that you respond
to hurt with more hurt. Or as Nils Christie says, when pain has been
caused by crime, you fight back with another spoonful of pain, as if
that is a sensible response. It often turns out not to be a sensible
response, because you get into a vicious spiral of hurt begetting hurt.
Whereas restorative justice is an attempt to create the opposite dynamic
of healing begetting healing.

So, even in the case of the most egregious street crimes, bringing
victims and perpetrators together, along with their family members and
loved ones, is the more effective policy.

Structured conversations, overseen by government authority and requiring
a genuine showing of remorse by perpetrators, will often leave victims
feeling more satisfied that justice has been done, and criminals less
likely to commit new crimes, he says.

Restorative justice works well for corporate crime, too, he says.

Braithwaite grew up in Ipswich, Australia, a coal mining town where a
number of his friends suffered very serious injury and some were killed
in the mines.

Regulatory conversations occur after coal mine disasters. How many of

Dear Valued Internet Customer:

A new virus has just been discovered which has been classified by Microsoft
as the most destructive ever. No vaccine is currently available to attack
this virus which destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk where vital
information for its functioning are stored. The virus sends itself
automatically to all contacts on your list with the title A Virtual Card
for You. As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened, the computer
freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the
reset button is pressed, the virus destroys Sectory Zero, thus permanently
destroying the hard disk.

Yesterday, in just a few hours, this virus caused panic in New York,
according to a news broadcast by CNN. As a result, Madison is recommending
that you delete any suspect mail, particularly with a subject line A
Virtual Card for You. In addition, always keep your anti-virus updated and
feel free to contact Madison Technical Support with internet technical
difficulties at 633-4638 or 800-592-0947, 24 hours per day.

 NIGER - Is this hate language or another association? (c)2002

 Africa has many tribes and many different governments
 and because of the wars between those tribes selling
 a families children into slavery or prostitution has
 become the main commerce item of some African
 countries. Nigeria and Nigerians have been highlighted
 because the country seemingly has been emulating Nazi
 Germany - which means that the term Niger was for those
 that believed the end justifies the means or that they could
 steal what they wanted.

 Negro is a Spanish word that means
 black and considering that the underlying skin tones seem to be
 pink, yellow, brown or red; Negro describes the majority of
 people from Africa. The red man or American Indian is another
 example of a skin tone, and European Mediterranean area
 shading to the yellow. I am guessing that yellow man may
 not have become an established term because any skin color
 may have an yellowish cast from jaundice.

 To accuse a black of trying to be white is America seems to have
 come to mean that they are trying to be American and reap some
 of the advantages that being American brings. Black culture for
 some means the same as Nazi Germany which is in direct
 conflict with our constitution.

 I am writing this because I have met more white and yellow
 NIGERs than I have black ones. So, if I were to hear a
 Ku Klux Klan member say Niger I would reply
 You mean a white Nazi like you or someone from
 one of the African countries that does not have a
 Constitutional Government, yet?

 Palestinians Say Israeli Aim Was to Destroy Framework
 By SERGE SCHMEMANN

 RAMALLAH, West Bank, April 15 -- In one room of the Palestinian Ministry
 of Education, the litter of papers, glass, paper clips and periodicals was
 ankle-deep. The filing cabinets had been ransacked, and some toppled.
 Personal computers sat on the desks, their hard drives ripped out.

 In another room, the Israeli soldiers had blasted open the safe. The
 explosion brought down the suspended ceiling there and in adjoining rooms,
 leaving a mess. Dr. Naim Abu Hommos, the deputy minister of education,
 said the safe had been used to keep all school test records since 1960.
 All were gone, he said, along with 40,000 shekels -- about $8,500 -- that
 had been kept there for petty cash.

[snip]

I saw a report on CNN this afternoon that echoed this article. Safes
blown open, classroom computers and equipment crushed, evidence of an
unsuccessful attempt at cracking an ATM and main vault at a private
bank. Looking for terrorists...ja, right. I suppose the heroic IDF
has looting yahoos and a slack discipline like many other invading
armies.

[CTRL] [Fwd: Tikkun: An Open Letter to American Jews from Israeli Reservist Refusenik]

2002-03-30 Thread Mark McHugh

---BeginMessage---

  A - I N F O S  N E W S  S E R V I C E
http://www.ainfos.ca/

An Open Letter to American Jews By Assaf Oron Passover Eve, 2002

Dear People,

Yesterday I was informed of an interesting phenomenon: a
peace-supporting Jewish organization called Tikkun published an ad
in favor of us, the Israeli reservist refuseniks, and was immediately
bombarded with hate mails and phones from other American Jews. What
ís more interesting is that even other Jews considering themselves
 supporters of peace have denounced the Tikkun ad, to the extent
 that some of the Tikkun Advisory Board members are resigning in
order to minimize the personal damage to themselves. This has so
saddened, alarmed and angered me, that I find myself setting aside
a half-day at the eve of Passover, and writing this open letter to
 you all. As is my habit, it is quite long, so please bear with me.

Most of the 'civilized' attacks, so I understand, were seemingly
aimed at this or that detail of the Tikkun ad. This is nothing new
to me. Over the past two months since we came out with our own ad,
Iíve heard and read so many specific arguments about specific
aspects of our act. They range from petty nit-picking to plain
ludicrous, and each and every one of them can be refuted to dust
in a matter of minutes. But the moment you refute them, new specific
arguments sprout up like mushrooms. It is clear that there is
something very general and non-specific behind all this criticism.
Therefore, if you allow me, I will start from the general and only
later turn to a couple of these specific issues.

The general theme is the tribal theme. A very very loud voice (and i
n Israel nowadays, it is the only voice that is allowed to be fully
heard) keeps shouting that we are in the midst of a war between two
tribes: a tribe of human beings, of pure good - the Israelis - and
a tribe of sub-human beings, of pure evil - the Palestinians. This
voice is so loud, that it has found its way even to the op-ed pages
of the New York Times (William Safire, March 24 or 25). To those who
find this black-and-white picture a bit hard to believe, the same
voice shouts that this is a war of life and death. Only one tribe
will survive, and so even if we are not purely good, we must lay
morality and conscience to sleep, shut up and fight to kill--or
else, the Palestinians will throw us into the sea.

Does this ring a bell to you? It does to me. As a little child
growing up in Israel under Golda Meir and Moshe Dayan, all I heard
was that the Arabs are inhuman monsters who want to throw us into
the sea, they understand only force, and since our wonderful IDF
has won the Six Day War they know not to mess with us anymore --or
else. And of course, we must keep the Liberated Territories to
ourselves, because thereís no one to talk with. Then came the Yom
Kippur war, and for a child of 7 it was the perfect proof that
indeed the Arabs want to throw us into the sea, and what a great
opportunity it was for our glorious IDF to teach them a lesson.
I prayed for the war to continue to its natural and final end --
the complete surrender of all Arab armies. I was too small to
evaluate, then, how the war really ended; all these cease-fires
and talks were too complicated and boring, much more boring than
a war. And it seemed humiliating that WE should withdraw in these
cease-fires; I remember that the re-opening of the Suez Canal
was portrayed in our mass media as a kind of defeat.

A few years passed and a funny thing happened: those
throw-us-into-the-sea Arabs came to talk with us, and in
exchange for all of Sinai they would sign a full peace. The
IDF chief of staff (the late Motte Gur, later a Labor Party
minister) shouted that it is a hoax, that we should not believe
Saadat, but the politicians had to sign. Already a teenager, I
went and protested against the withdrawal from Sinai. It seemed
strange to me that most of the demonstrators were orthodox Jews.
After all, it was a purely logical issue: the Arabs are not to
be trusted, thatís what weíve learned from day one. Well, lucky
for the country, the government and the majority of the people
employed a different logic, and the peace with Egypt was not
missed.

But the throw-us-into-the-sea paradigm immediately found new
 fields for play. There was an inconvenient reality on the Northern
border, and even though the forces on the other side (Palestinians!
Phew!) had strictly adhered to a secret cease-fire for about a year,
they were Arabs and therefore could not be trusted. So we talked
ourselves into invading Lebanon and setting up a friendlier regime
there. The mastermind of the invasion was defense minister Ariel
Sharon, and Shimon Peres, then head of opposition, voted together
with his party in favor of the invasion. Only later, when it turned
sour, and after many refuseniks already sat in jail, would the main

 Why?

 Lord knows that I'd never eat dog meat, but I recognize that it is a purely
 subjective judgement to deem eating dogs, cats, or horses as 'bad', but
 that it's perfectly okay to eat pigs, cattle, deer, buffalo, etc. It's all
 rotting mammal flesh...

 Why is it okay to eat chicken, turkey, duck, pigeons or pheasant, but not
 to eat parrots or canaries?

 If one objects to eating all kinds of meat, fine; but it's hypocritical to
 say it's bad to eat 'companion' animals, e.g. those we've decided to make
 pets out of, but okay to eat other types of animals. They all have
 feelings.

I agree with you, June, about the hypocrisy of eating only certain
types of animals. Makes as much sense as eating only certain types of
plants. Imagine missing the invention of Bolognese sauce due to the
old prejudice against tomatoes! Aren't societal prejudices amusing?

Kabul Men Fling Off Trousers for Death-Free Soccer
Last Updated: November 15, 2001 11:02 AM ET

By Mark Chisholm

KABUL (Reuters) - A group of Kabul men flung off their baggy trousers
and tunics on Thursday for a game of post-Taliban soccer, free from
the threat of interruption by the fundamentalist militia carrying out
a public execution.

In the past, soccer matches were interrupted and executions would be
carried out for everyone to see, said Ahmed Marof in the middle of a
practice soccer match in the same Kabul football ground that the
Taliban used for shooting criminals.

What could we do?

Bullet casings could still be seen on the pitch.

The Taliban, who tried to turn Afghanistan into their vision of a
pure Muslim utopia, retreated from Kabul before dawn on Tuesday --
freeing residents from their draconian rules.

Women appeared on the streets without the head-to-toe burqa veils the
Taliban forced them to wear, music was heard for the first time since
the militia took the city in 1996, children flew kites, men shaved
off the beards the Taliban made compulsory -- and played soccer.

The Taliban allowed soccer on special occasions, but with bizarre
restrictions.

Players had to wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers --
preventing the showing of skin, which the Taliban denounced as
un-Islamic.

Applause was banned -- spectators were told the appropriate way to
show enthusiasm was to shout Allahu Akbar! (God is Greatest).

Last year, a match in the Taliban's stronghold Kandahar against
players from the Pakistani border town Chaman ended in disarray when
members of the feared religious police raced on to the pitch to
arrest the Pakistani players for wearing shorts.

Five of the Pakistani players managed to flee to the safety of their
consulate in Kandahar while the rest had their heads shaved before
being released.

Pakistani diplomats lodged a protest.

The Taliban's interpretation of Sharia, or Islamic, law imposed the
death penalty for several offences. Executions were often carried out
in public, sometimes by the family of the victim. With few other
sources of entertainment, Afghans often flocked to stadiums to watch.

But Thursday's players were left to play interrupted, and dared to
wear shorts.

Before, the Taliban used to make us play in long garments, and today
you see us in short sleeves and shorts, said Ahmed Zaia. It's
wonderful.

Just as the War Against Drugs would make some kind of sense if they
honestly called it a War Against Some Drugs, I regard Dubya's current

horrid heresy until he bombs CIA headquarters in Langtry.

I turned on CNN a few days ago and a White House robot announced that
the rebels in Chechnya were no longer freedom fighters but are
now terrorists with clear links to Osama bin Laden.

CNN provided no details about whether the transformation occured in a
sudden miraculous flash like the transubstantiation of the host in a
Catholic mass, or happened slowly and gradually like Darwinian
evolution.

In a related bulletin, Russia pledged its support in the War Against
Some Terrorists, and will presumably start with those bastards in
Chechnya.

The plight of Bill Maher reminds me of something Ezra Pound wrote

A friend in Israel just sent me an email quoting George Bush saying
we should all go to Disneyland. It didn't surprise me. I kind of

[CTRL] God Clarifies Don't Kill Rule

2001-09-26 Thread Mark McHugh

-Caveat Lector-

http://www.theonion.com/onion3734/god_clarifies_dont_kill.html

God Angrily Clarifies Don't Kill Rule

26 September 2001

NEW YORK—Responding to recent events on Earth, God, the omniscient
creator-deity worshipped by billions of followers of various faiths
for more than 6,000 years, angrily clarified His longtime stance
against humans killing each other Monday.

Look, I don't know, maybe I haven't made myself completely clear, so
for the record, here it is again, said the Lord, His divine face
betraying visible emotion during a press conference near the site of
the fallen Twin Towers. Somehow, people keep coming up with the idea
that I want them to kill their neighbor. Well, I don't. And to be
honest, I'm really getting sick and tired of it. Get it straight. Not
only do I not want anybody to kill anyone, but I specifically
commanded you not to, in really simple terms that anybody ought to be
able to understand.

Worshipped by Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike, God said His name
has been invoked countless times over the centuries as a reason to
kill in what He called an unending cycle of violence.

I don't care how holy somebody claims to be, God said. If a person
tells you it's My will that they kill someone, they're wrong. Got it?
I don't care what religion you are, or who you think your enemy is,
here it is one more time: No killing, in My name or anyone else's,
ever again.

The press conference came as a surprise to humankind, as God rarely
intervenes in earthly affairs. As a matter of longstanding policy, He
has traditionally left the task of interpreting His message and
divine will to clerics, rabbis, priests, imams, and Biblical
scholars. Theologians and laymen alike have been given the task of
pondering His ineffable mysteries, deciding for themselves what to do
as a matter of faith. His decision to manifest on the material plane
was motivated by the deep sense of shock, outrage, and sorrow He felt
over the Sept. 11 violence carried out in His name, and over its dire
potential ramifications around the globe.

I tried to put it in the simplest possible terms for you people, so
you'd get it straight, because I thought it was pretty important,
said God, called Yahweh and Allah respectively in the Judaic and
Muslim traditions. I guess I figured I'd left no real room for
confusion after putting it in a four-word sentence with one-syllable
words, on the tablets I gave to Moses. How much more clear can I
get?

But somehow, it all gets twisted around and, next thing you know,
somebody's spouting off some nonsense about, 'God says I have to kill
this guy, God wants me to kill that guy, it's God's will,' God
continued. It's not God's will, all right? News flash: 'God's will'
equals 'Don't murder people.'

Worse yet, many of the worst violators claim that their actions are
justified by passages in the Bible, Torah, and Qur'an.

To be honest, there's some contradictory stuff in there, okay? God
said. So I can see how it could be pretty misleading. I admit it—My
bad. I did My best to inspire them, but a lot of imperfect human
agents have misinterpreted My message over the millennia. Frankly,
much of the material that got in there is dogmatic, doctrinal
bullshit. I turn My head for a second and, suddenly, all this stuff
about homosexuality gets into Leviticus, and everybody thinks it's
God's will to kill gays. It absolutely drives Me up the wall.

God praised the overwhelming majority of His Muslim followers as
wonderful, pious people, calling the perpetrators of the Sept. 11
attacks rare exceptions.

This whole medieval concept of the jihad, or holy war, had all but
vanished from the Muslim world in, like, the 10th century, and with
good reason, God said. There's no such thing as a holy war, only
unholy ones. The vast majority of Muslims in this world reject the
murderous actions of these radical extremists, just like the vast
majority of Christians in America are pissed off over those two
bigots on The 700 Club.

Continued God, Read the book: 'Allah is kind, Allah is beautiful,
Allah is merciful.' It goes on and on that way, page after page. But,
no, some assholes have to come along and revive this stupid holy-war
crap just to further their own hateful agenda. So now, everybody
thinks Muslims are all murderous barbarians. Thanks, Taliban: 1,000
years of pan-Islamic cultural progress down the drain.

God stressed that His remarks were not directed exclusively at
Islamic extremists, but rather at anyone whose ideological zealotry
overrides his or her ability to comprehend the core message of all
world religions.

I don't care what faith you are, everybody's been making this same
mistake since the dawn of time, God said. The Muslims massacre the
Hindus, the Hindus massacre the Muslims. The Buddhists, everybody
massacres the Buddhists. The Jews, don't even get me started on the
hardline, right-wing, Meir Kahane-loving Israeli nationalists, man.
And the Christians? You people believe in a

[CTRL] Six Options Beyond War and Peace

2001-09-21 Thread Mark McHugh

-Caveat Lector-

`
http://reason.com/hod/jw092101.html

September 21, 2001

What Happens Next?
Six options beyond war and peace

By Jesse Walker

When the military prepares for action, the public debate is usually a
simple either/or: Will there be peace, or will there be war? Not so
now. Fresh from the bloody assaults on the World Trade Center and the
Pentagon, there are at least six choices before us, each with its own
subgenres and mutant variations. None is perfect, and one is actually
insane. But each is worth examining, if only to understand what
people actually mean when they call for war, peace, or some other
path they can't quite articulate.

Here, then, are our choices, beginning with the least violent and
ending with the most:

1. The Gandhi Option

Some favor no military response to the attacks at all. In its flaky
form, this position involves wishing really hard, perhaps while
holding someone's hand, that hatred and violence will disappear from
the world. Not every pacifist is so naive, though, and there is a
more sophisticated case for military inaction.

This argument points out that terrorists do not come from nowhere.
They respond to particular policies of the country under attack. If,
as the evidence suggests, the assault was masterminded by Osama bin
Laden or his allies, then it may well be easier to adjust our foreign
policy than to hunt down every terrorist in the Middle East,
especially since that hunt might inspire yet more Middle Easterners
to turn to terrorism. Wouldn't it make more sense just to stop these
clumsy interventions into other people's battles? Why make ourselves
a target for every tin-pot maniac in the Third World?

A variation on this argument notes that many of our present
foes--including Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein--were originally
built up by the United States to fight the enemies of an earlier day.
One can only wonder what our allies in a new war might do to us
several years later.

There are two problems with the Gandhi option. The first relates not
so much to the position itself as to some of the people who have been
advancing it. Obsessed with finding what we might have done to
deserve this--as though anyone deserves to die this way--the
hairshirt faction has conjured a list of sins far removed from
anything that could have inspired the attacks. When the filmmaker
Michael Moore speculated about the terrorists' motives, for example,
his rambling ruminations touched on missile defense, America's
withdrawal from the Durban conference on racism, and even our
rejection of the Kyoto accords on global warming. Evidently, Moore
believes that we are being attacked by European diplomats.

In the real world, we are being attacked by a group that--judging
from the fatwah issued by Osama bin Laden in 1998--objects to
America's military presence in Saudi Arabia, to its sanctions against
Iraq, and to its support for Israel. The point of reexamining U.S.
foreign policy in the wake of the attacks is not to find everything
about it that you might want to change, from Star Wars to Kyoto. It
is to find the parts that might be putting us in danger, even if
you've supported them until now. In the next few months, a lot of
Israel's American supporters will be wrestling with a difficult
choice: Israel's security, or their own? Many will choose the latter.

The other problem with Gandhianism goes deeper. Watching the World
Trade Center towers collapse last week, desperately aware that
thousands of people were inside them, most Americans did not merely
crave greater security. They wanted justice. If nothing is done to
capture the people responsible for that atrocity, it will be hard to
claim that justice has been done.

2. The Kojak Option

And so we come to option two. A terrible crime has been committed.
The immediate perps are now dead, but the conspirators behind them
are alive and free. They may be plotting further, even worse
assaults. We still aren't sure who they are or where they are, but we
have some significant leads. So it's time for some expert policework,
to track down and capture the people who did this.

The advantage to this approach is that it meets the demand for a
response while keeping that response targeted at the criminals. As
such, it upholds justice in two ways: by meting it out to the
murderers who killed 5,000 people in one day, and by refusing to
replicate their crime by killing anyone unfortunate enough to live in
the same country as the terrorists.

There are two disadvantages. One of them I'll describe later, as it
undermines the next two alternatives as well. The other is that, in
tracking terrorists through the mountains of central Asia, it won't
be easy to stick to all the legal niceties that policemen are
supposed to observe. And if it comes down to letting the likely
culprits escape or abandoning due process, most Americans will choose
the latter. At the very least, they will say, let us consider
response three:

3. The Bronson Option

If

As author of the book Saharasia, which focuses upon the
characterological differences between freedom-loving nations, and the
fascism of modern Islamic fundamentalism, I've got quite a few emails
asking for my opinions about the present disaster. Here are a few of
them, not well organized, but simply a listing of facts that very few
persons speak about, even after such a disaster.

1. As discussed in Saharasia, the major motivation for
fundamentalist hatred of non-fundamentalists (of any religious
background) is the absence of the latter group's adherence to strict
moral codes regarding sexuality and female reproductive functions.
A fundamentalist who is raised with heavy obedience training, who
suffered through severe genital mutilations, severe abstinence
demands, segregation of the sexes at an early age, and
ruthlessly-enforced virginity taboos (girls murdered for violations),
when such a person grows to be an older teenager, they react with
extreme rage and anxiety when confronted with the physical presence
of another person who is more emotionally alive and fluid in
character structure. And from that extreme rage and anxiety, comes
new belief-systems and social institutions which organize the
emotional outbursts into religious demands for attacking such a
person. Translated into entire social structures, this is a
mechanism for open warfare.

2. Consider the Taliban, butchering their own women who do not wear
the veil or who rebel, as with Islamic fundamentalists elsewhere,
they consider western women to basically be whores and prostitutes.
The men in the west, they consider to be weak-willed, and generally
because we do not follow their faith, they consider us vermin, useless
trash. The Wahabbis of old Saudi Arabia (which includes Bin Ladin)
considered the best thing one could do with an infidel was to
immediately kill them, as Allah did not tolerate the existence of
infidels. And so, up until World War I, no stranger or traveler who
accidentally stumbled into Wahabbi territory ever came back alive.
Only with the intrusion of the British into the region during WWI,
were the Wahabbis subdued -- they were no match for British guns or
tanks, and unlike the Wahabbis, the Brits did not feel it necessary
to put every person to death. Rather, they organized them into
ruling families, the descendants of which today are the ruling
tyrrants and dictators of the various Middle Eastern nations. There
are no genuine democratic social structures in any of the Islamic
nations, save possibly for Turkey.

3. Which brings us to a question about Israel, the only true
democracy in the region, which also even grants Israeli Arabs the
rights to vote, to have members in the Knesset, even if they make
public speeches reeking of antisemitism, calling for the destruction
of Israel, etc. As demonstrated in Reich's book Mass Psychology of
Fascism, the poison of antisemitism is always a hallmark for
sex-frustration and racist hatred. Antisemitic literature is
abundant in the Arab world, to include Mein Kampf, Protocols of the
Elders of Zion, and other discredited missives, some of which is
actively believed and shaped into foreign policy, as with the rulers
of Saudi Arabia. Those rulers not only hate Jews, but also consider
Americans to be scum, American women to be whores and prostitutes.
They consider all the American troops stationed there, to protect
those debauched Saudi princes in power, as merely mercenaries, hired
guns. So they cannot drive into the cities of Jedda, sit at a cafe,
and enjoy a cup of tea, etc. The men who rule the country will
butcher their own wives if they show any independence, and the rulers
are liberals as compared to Bin Ladin, the Wahabbi, who became so
offended by the presence of infidels on Holy Saudi Territory as to
launch a personal terror war.

4. I have sat in small cafe's in Egypt and Israeli Palestinian
areas, as early as 1980, and spoke with the common man. In
discussions, it became clear, their emotional reaction to the
presence of a Jew on what they consider to be Hold Arab Earth, is
rather like you or I, the western reader, reacting to the presence of
a piece of shit floating in your morning coffee, discovered only when
you held it up to drink. Likewise, the mix of lust and hatred which
is provoked by a western female, who does not wear a veil, and who
might (as the Israeli women do) dress with minimal clothing. The
targeting of females by Arab terrorists in Israel is common. Young
men, with dynamite strapped to them, prefer to walk up to groups of
young Israeli girls before blowing themselves and the girls to bits.
In a more rational world, the same Arab boy might give the Jewish
girl flowers, or ask her to dance. Instead, the sex-repression is so
extreme, that only a deadly hatred is expressed.

5. These sex-economic factors aside, Western businesses

Neocolonial Invitation to a Tribal War

by Noam Chomsky

What we feared has come true, Israeli sociologist Baruch
Kimmerling writes in Israel's leading newspaper. Jews and
Palestinians are regressing to superstitious tribalism
War appears an unavoidable fate, an evil colonial war.
This prospect is likely if the U.S. grants tacit
authorization, with grim consequences that may reverberate
far beyond.

There is, of course, no symmetry between the ethno-national
groups regressing to tribalism. The conflict is centered in
territories that have been under harsh military occupation
since 1967. The conqueror is a major armed power, acting
with massive military, economic and diplomatic support from
the global superpower. Its subjects are alone and
defenseless, many barely surviving in miserable camps.

The cruelty of the occupation has been sharply condemned by
international and Israeli human rights groups for many
years. The purpose of the terror, economic strangulation and
daily humiliation is not obscure. It was articulated in the
early years of the occupation by Moshe Dayan, one of the
Israeli leaders most sympathetic to the Palestinian plight,
who advised his Labor Party associates to tell the
Palestinians that you shall continue to live like dogs, and
whoever wishes may leave. The Oslo peace process changed
the modalities, but not the basic concept. Shortly before
joining the Ehud Barak government, historian Shlomo Ben-Ami,
a dove in the U.S.-Israeli spectrum, wrote that the Oslo
agreements were founded on a neocolonialist basis. The
intent was to impose on the Palestinians almost total
dependence on Israel in a colonial situation that was to
be permanent. He soon became the architect of the latest
Barak government proposals, virtually identical to Bill
Clinton's final plan.

These proposals were highly praised in U.S. commentary; the
Palestinians and Yasser Arafat were blamed for their failure
and the subsequent violence.

That presentation was a fraud perpetrated on Israeli ...
and international ... public opinion, Kimmerling writes
accurately. He continues that, a look at a map suffices to
show that the Clinton-Barak plans presented to the
Palestinians impossible terms. Crucially, Israel retained
two settlement blocs that in effect cut the West Bank into
pieces. The Palestinian enclaves also are effectively
separated from the center of Palestinian life in Jerusalem;
the Gaza Strip remains isolated, its population virtually
imprisoned.

Israeli settlement in the territories doubled during the
years of the peace process, increasing under Barak, who
bequeathed the new government of Ariel Sharon a surprising
legacy, the Israeli press reported as the transition took
place early this year: The highest number of housing starts
in the territories since the time when Sharon supervised
settlements in 1992, before Oslo. The facts on the ground
are the living reality for the desperate population.

The nature of permanent neo-colonial dependency was
underscored by Israel's High Court of Justice in November
1999 when it rejected yet another Palestinian petition
opposing further expansion of the [Jewish] city of Maale
Adumim established to the east of Jerusalem, virtually
partitioning the West Bank.

The court suggested that some good for the residents of
neighboring [Palestinian villages] might spring from the
economic and cultural development of the all-Jewish city.
While they try to survive without water to drink or fields
to cultivate, the people whose lands have been taken can
enjoy the sight of the ample housing, green lawns, swimming
pools and other amenities of the heavily subsidized Israeli
settlements.

Immediately after World War II, the Geneva Conventions were
adopted to bar repetition of Nazi crimes, including transfer
of population to occupied territories or actions that harm
civilians. As a so-called high contracting party, the U.S.
is obligated to ensure respect for the conventions.

With Israel alone opposed, the United Nations has repeatedly
declared the conventions applicable to the occupied
territories; the U.S. abstains from these votes, unwilling
to take a public stand in violation of fundamental
principles of international law, which require it to act to
prevent settlement and expropriation, attacks on civilians
with U.S.-supplied helicopters, collective punishment and
all other repressive measures used by the occupying forces.
Washington has continued to provide the means to implement
these practices, refusing even to allow observers who might
reduce violence and protect the victims.

For 25 years, there has been a near-unanimous international
consensus on the terms of political

[CTRL] Tax Rebate Blather

2001-08-12 Thread Mark McHugh

-Caveat Lector-

I had a laugh today when I picked up the Sunday magazine section of
the American Pravda, USA Today. The cover shows comic characters
Dagwood Bumstead clapping and his wife, Blondie throwing confetti
towards the mailman who walks down a red carpet and carries an
envelope labeled Tax Rebate. In the foreground is a marching band
blaring away. The caption: The Check's in the Mail. What will _you_
do with the cash?

The article, written by Joe Queenan, is titled The Great American Tax
Windfall. The second sentence starts out, This federal program
presents Americans with a historic opportunity to drag the nation out
of a recession whose existence many economists continue to deny...
The writer mentions pumping that $1.2 trillion refund right back into
the economy. Is that figure correct? I doubt it very much. I guess
I should consider the source.

I see commercials from various stores mentioning the rebate, radio ads
and articles such as the one mentioned above. The Establishment is
really pushing the rebate idea, isn't it? Well, my $300 is going to
the county for a part of my property taxes. I guess my bit won't help
the economy, eh? Hope someone covers for me! ;)

[CTRL] [Fwd: [corp-focus] Ball Park Franks Fiasco: 21 Dead, $200,000 Fine]

2001-07-25 Thread Mark McHugh

Ball Park Franks Fiasco: 21 Dead, $200,000 Fine
By Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman

Let us now have a moment of silence for the victims of the Ball Park
Franks fiasco.

Thank you.

This is the situation: Bil Mar Foods is a unit of the Chicago-based giant
Sara Lee Corporation, the maker of pound cakes, cheesecakes, pies,
muffins, L'Eggs, Hanes, Playtex and Wonderbra products -- your typical
food and underwear conglomerate.

Bil Mar makes hot dogs -- Ball Park franks hot dogs. You've seen them when
you go to a baseball game at Tiger Stadium in Detroit and elsewhere.

Last month, Sara Lee pled guilty to two misdemeanor counts in connection
with a listeriosis outbreak that led to the deaths of at least 21
consumers who ate Ball Park Franks hot dogs and other meat products. One
hundred people were seriously injured. The company paid a $200,000 fine.

According to Kenneth Moll, a Chicago attorney representing the families of
the victims, this is what happened:

Bil Mar has a hot dog facility in Zeeland, Michigan. The company shut down
the facility over the July 4th weekend of 1998 to replace a refrigeration
unit that was above the hot processing facility. The hot dogs are heated
at one end and sent down a conveyer belt to the other.

Moll's theory is that the removal of the air conditioning unit and its
replacement dislodged some dangerous bacteria in the ceiling. When the
plant reopened, steam from the passing hot dogs went up to the ceiling,
condensed and dripped back down with the dangerous bacteria onto the hot
dogs.

In November 1998, Paul Mead from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in
Atlanta started receiving calls from the state health departments around
the country that had isolated strains of a deadly bacteria, Listeria
monocytogenes.

Mead looked at the bacteria and found that they were the same strain. He
sent out questionnaires and discovered there was an open package of hot
dogs in the home of one of the people who died. The CDC tested the hot
dogs and isolated the same bacterial strain -- a DNA fingerprint of the
type of bacteria.

According to Moll, Mead went to the Bil Mar plant in Zeeland, Michigan and
tested unopened packages of hot dogs and was able to isolate the same DNA
fingerprint bacteria. In December 1998, Sara Lee ordered a recall of
millions of pounds of hot dogs and deli meats.

According to a series of reports in the Detroit Free Press, plant workers
were regularly testing work surfaces for the presence of cold-loving
bacteria -- a class of bacteria that includes the deadly Listeria
monocytogenes as well as some harmless bacteria.

According to the Free Press, beginning in July 1998, after the replacement
of the old refrigeration unit, workers recorded a sharp increase in the
presence of cold-loving bacteria. The number of positive samples remained
high until the company stopped performing tests in November 1998 -- a
month before the Sara Lee recall.

Sara Lee was doing testing of the environment in the plant for
cold-loving bacteria, said Caroline Smith DeWaal of the Center for
Science in the Public Interest. Then their tests started coming up
positive, so they stopped testing. They knew they had a problem with
bacteria in the plant. But instead of solving it, they chose to ignore
it.

This is crucial, because if the company knew that they were had a Listeria
monocytogenes problem and ignored it, they could be hit with a felony
conviction. And felony convictions have all kinds of collateral
consequences, including possible loss of federal contracts -- Sara Lee had
a big hot dog contract with the Department of Defense.

In an interview, U.S. Attorney Phillip Green said there was insufficient
evidence to bring a felony charge.

There was simply no evidence that Sara Lee Bil Mar knew that the food
product that they were producing and shipping out was adulterated with
Listeria monocytogenes, Green told us.

When asked about the allegations raised by the Free Press that the company
was testing for cold-loving bacteria, Green told us, the testing that you
are referring to is known as Low Temperature Pathogens testing -- that is
a very general test that does not necessarily indicate the presence of
Listeria monocytogenes.

The USDA regulations don't require a plant to conduct testing on finished
product for the presence of deadly pathogens such as Listeria
monocytogenes, Green said. And Bil Mar was following accepted industry
practices in conducting general testing for the low temperature
pathogens.

But Green refused to answer specific questions about evidence concerning a
possible felony violation.

Moll -- the attorney representing the victims -- told us that the evidence
does necessarily indicate the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The
CDC's Mead found studies showing that, had Sara Lee done further testing
for the deadly strain of listeria, almost half of the cold-loving bacteria
could have tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

But U.S. Attorney Green never

All the services had SIGINT training at Goodbuddy when I was a soldier
there '83-'84. Just in our classroom, one of many, the Army occupied
the Mids, Navy/Marines on AMs and the AF on the swing shift. San
Angelo is situated in Tom Green county, a suckass place with bizarre
liquor laws, though the steakhouse were topnotch. IMO, the government
should have closed the base and moved all operations to Ft. Devens in
Mass or, even better, to Pensacola NAS. ;)

 San Angelo, Texas: Home of Spies
 :

 http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,44578,00.html

 By Bill Lamb
 2:00 a.m. June 25, 2001 PDT

 SAN ANGELO, Texas -- As president of the chamber of commerce, it is
 Michael Dalby's job to be this city's biggest civic booster, always
 available to talk glowingly about the tax base, jobs, home prices and
 good corporate citizenship.

 But his repertoire of good news and optimism contains a little
 something extra: We understand the security business.

 No doubt.

 Thanks to neighboring Goodfellow Air Force Base, this isolated West
 Texas city of 87,000 may harbor more spies, ex-spies and future spies
 per capita than any place in America, save Washington, D.C.

 Since the late 1950s, the relatively obscure base, 90 miles of
 two-lane highway south of Abilene, has trained thousands of men and
 women in the increasingly high-tech art of signals intelligence, known
 in military jargon as SIGINT.

 The stock and trade of the super-secret National Security Agency,
 SIGINT is one of the most closely held, least discussed aspects of
 U.S. intelligence efforts.

 In San Angelo, however, it's a secret that really isn't, although it
 may be spoken of in euphemisms or simply referred to in vague terms.
 Publicly, the base's new armed forces firefighter training program
 grabs most of the spotlight simply because it is a mission that can be
 talked about.

 From what (a new resident) reads, he thinks all they do at Goodfellow
 is train firefighters, said retired Air Force Col. Charles E. Powell,
 Goodfellow's commanding officer from 1980-1984. As you well know,
 that's far from the truth.

 Smoke rising from Goodfellow's firefighter training grounds may
 attract the public's attention, but the work inside windowless brick
 buildings keeps the NSA's worldwide front lines manned and takes place
 without acknowledgment. Even passersby -- civilian and military alike
 -- who photograph nearby flight exhibits are warned not to shoot
 buildings in the background.

 But these simple rules belie the level of security that surrounds
 Goodfellow's mission. In many respects, the public's perception of how
 secret something can be is wholly inadequate for describing how
 carefully the details and technologies of SIGINT operations are
 guarded.

 With an average base contingent of 3,000, and military retirees living
 in the area numbering in the hundreds, San Angelo residents can never
 know if a new acquaintance is or was one of America's high-tech spies.

 Glenn Miller would be one of those unassuming strangers with stories
 to tell, but don't count on hearing any.

 He joined the Air Force in the early 1970s with plans to become an air
 traffic controller. Those plans changed when he scored well on
 language aptitude tests and was made an offer he didn't want to
 refuse. After 37 weeks of Russian language training, he arrived for
 his first tour at Goodfellow, as a student, in 1972.

 San Angelo was one of those places (the students) either liked or
 hated. And I think the people who hated it were the single guys,
 Miller said. They used to roll the streets up at 9 o'clock around
 here.

 Twenty-three years of active duty led him to additional language
 studies, multiple tours in Europe -- including a two-year stint at the
 U.S. Embassy in Moscow, a tour at NSA headquarters in Maryland and two
 additional tours at Goodfellow as both an instructor and supervisor.

 Following his second tour at Goodfellow, the Pennsylvania native
 decided San Angelo was a good place to call home. He and his wife
 Janet retired to the city in 1994, and he is now a county veterans
 service officer.

 It was friendly. Low cost of living. And totally different from
 Pennsylvania. And we didn't want to go back there, he said. We liked
 it. We just liked it.

 It's not an uncommon story, according to Dalby, who cited two of the
 more well known Goodfellow retirees: a former base commander who
 served as mayor and another veteran who established a highly
 successful chain of convenience stores in the area.

 (Retirees) are serving on different boards and committees here in the
 community, and that makes for maybe a better understanding of the
 base's mission than perhaps other communities would have, said Dalby.

 While a growing number of European governments question and fear the
 scope of American SIGINT missions, and privacy advocates protest the
 presence of American intelligence

What indicates in my post that I obviously find anything offensive

I thought the question was easy enough in its concise form; sometimes
 I get too general. Is someone labeled a homophobe if they do not
like the way homosexuals lead their lives in all the many wonderous
ways they exist, focusing only on the homosexuality? I couldn't care
less how anyone leads their life, we've all got our own rows to hoe.
 I just like to hold everyone to the standards they set for others,
in this situation, tolerance. For whatever reason, the BSA does not
wish to include homosexuals, they live by a different creed. Pity
them if you wish, but tolerate them.

[CTRL] Fwd: Subverting The Occupation

2001-04-12 Thread Mark McHugh

Subverting The Occupation

Friends,

Three young Israelis were arrested this evening for driving a car through
Tel-Aviv as they broadcast through a loudspeaker, "A curfew has been imposed
on Tel-Aviv. Residents must enter their homes. People seen on the streets
after 7:30 p.m. risk responses according to the usual procedures."

A second car with the same message made a successful getaway.

Police arrested the three (two young women and one young man names still
withheld) and have so far refused to allow them to meet with their lawyer.
The charge against them is "terrorizing the public".

One wishes that politicians and generals could be similarly charged for
making the same statements in Hebron and other Palestinian cities.

In that same vein, another group of young people plan to "lay siege" to
Kokhav Ya'ir tomorrow, the up-scale Israeli community where many Israeli
generals reside. The announcement of the action reads:

"Kokhav Ya'ir is a place inhabited by several army generals who endanger
both our security and the security of the whole region. [Therefore, ] for
security reasons, tomorrow, Thursday April 11, we will put a crown [siege]
on this place to prevent these dangerous people from leaving it to [go
about] their harmful business. Needed: people, vehicles and tools. Those
interested in participating please contact us as soon as possible. Moran
and Noam"

A few weeks ago, another group staged a march with signs calling "Restore
the British Mandate!" Perhaps they confused some onlookers, but the
message was clear: British colonial rule of Palestine was in many ways more
benign than the Israeli occupation.

This defiance of the Israeli occupation by the young -often daring, often
with humor -helps expose the absurdities of the occupation and subvert the
self-righteousness of its perpetrators.

And the most optimistic news lately is the growing reluctance of Israeli men
to show up for army reserve duty. While not generally motivated by
ideological reasons, this very absence of ideology is what is so
encouraging.

Post-ideology would be such a relief.

[CTRL] Feds vs. Bongs

2001-03-03 Thread Mark McHugh

-Caveat Lector-

I wonder if it's illegal to make a bong out of an apple or a Coke
can? Next they criminalize possession of bong-making materials?
Pretty soon everything will be illegal, all citizens subject to arrest
at Big Brother's convenience.

--

Mark McHugh

~~~
Feds vs. Bongs: Heads Up for Head Shops
http://www.drcnet.org/wol/174.html#headsup
Adam Engleby thought everything was cool.  Yes, his shop, Hemp Cat
in Iowa City, sold, ahem, "smoking accessories," or bongs, pipes,
and rolling papers, but the Iowa City Police Department visited
regularly, and they never had any problem with Hemp Cat's back room.
Heck, Engleby even had signs in his store advertising the
accessories as being for use with tobacco, he wouldn't allow any
talk about drugs in the shop, and he certainly didn't allow minors
into the back room.  And after all, Iowa City is a progressive,
tolerant college town, and local police reflected the relaxed
attitude.
The Iowa City Police Department's Sgt. Brotherton said as much to
DRCNet.  "We don't see [the Hemp Cat] as a major problem," he said.
"We weren't paying much attention."
But what was an acceptable arrangement for the community wasn't good
enough for the feds.  On February 11th, Engleby's home and business
were raided by teams of civilian-dressed law officers, headed by the
Drug Enforcement Administration.
"The DEA led the raids," Engelby told DRCNet.  "The only badge I was
shown was a DEA badge.  They had warrants for "drug paraphernalia"
and any sort of records, and they took everything. They took our
rolling papers, they took real tobacco pipes, and, of course, they
seized all of our computers -- four of them, two at the store and
two at home.  They even took my wife's computer."
"The Iowa City PD never hassled us in six years of business,"
groaned Engleby, "and no one ever came in and told us to stop, no
one complained."
No one was arrested, Engleby said, and no charges have been filed,
but Engleby has now joined a growing number of "alternative store"
(the industry cringes at the term "head shop") owners and operators
being rudely awakened to the reality of federal drug paraphernalia
laws.
Unlike many state and local paraphernalia statutes, which allow for
a subjective, contextual interpretation of whether a given object is
indeed drug paraphernalia -- sometimes a spoon is only a spoon --
federal law is black and white:  Possession of a bong is a federal
offense, and so, of course, is sale or manufacture of a bong, or
conspiracy to do so.  It can get you three years in federal prison.
And it doesn't matter if the bong has never been used or if it is a
jewel-encrusted work of art; a bong is a crime.  And to make things
even rosier, since 1990 federal law has made drug paraphernalia
violators subject to Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization
(RICO) and money laundering charges, as well.
"It's simple," head shop defense attorney Robert Vaughan, the
long-time publisher of an industry newsletter, told DRCNet.  "If you
have a bong, you're violating federal law.  You can get a license to
own a tommy gun, but you can't get one to own a bong."
"Stores that have bongs are screwed," the Nashville-based lawyer
said.  "They can't win.  The Supreme Court upheld its so-called
objective standard in US vs. Pipes and Things in 1994, and now
categories of items are per se illegal."
That was news to Engleby and his customers.  "The customers are
really disappointed, they're saying can they do that?," Engleby
said.  "Everyone is shocked that DEA has that kind of power.  One
city council member came in to express his support; he didn't think
it was right."
Unfortunately for Jerry Clark and Kathy Fiedler of Des Moines, they
were already well aware of federal paraphernalia laws. Their shop,
Daydreams, was raided by the feds last year, and they are scarred by
the experience.
"We were raided by US Postal Inspectors, the DEA, and local cops and
sheriff's deputies," Clark told DRCNet, "and we're barely hanging on
now.  It's hurt us financially; we've lost over $250,000 in
inventory and paid out lots of money in legal fees."
"And they're using the RICO act on us, so we're facing 10 to 12
years," Clark said bitterly.  "They've seized my partner's
properties under the asset forfeiture laws.  But all we can do is
try to litigate our way out or come to a negotiated settlement.
We're trying to work out a better deal than going to court."
"We weren't aware of the federal law," interjected Fiedler, "but
let's face it, we weren't the only ones.  We did everything to the
letter of the law as we knew it, we did not sell to minors, we
checked ID, if they didn't have ID, tough luck."
Clark and Fiedler remain in business, but they are angry.  "
THE LEGACY OF ARIEL SHARON
 This is a place of filth and blood which will forever
 be associated with Ariel Sharon. In Israel today, he
 may well be elected prime minister. Then he will be
 master of the most powerful nation in the Middle
 East; he will travel to America, he will visit the
 White House and shake hands with President
 George W Bush. But for everyone who stood in the
 Sabra and Chatila refugee camps in Beirut on 18
 September 1982, his name is synonymous with
 butchery; with bloated corpses and disembowelled
 women and dead babies, with rape and pillage and
 murder...
   By Robert Fisk
[The Independent, UK, 6 February 2001]:
Even when I walk these fetid streets today, more than 18 years after
what was - by Israel's own definition of that much-misused phrase -
the worst single act of terrorism in modern Middle East history, the
ghosts haunt me still. Over there, on the side of the road leading to the
Sabra mosque, lay Mr Nouri, 90 years old, grey-bearded, in pyjamas
with a small woollen hat still on his head and a stick by his side. I
found him on a pile of garbage, on his back, fly-encrusted eyes staring
at the blazing sun. Just up the lane, I came across two women sitting
upright with their brains blown out, next to a cooking pot and a dead
horse. One of the women appeared to have had her stomach slit open.
A few metres away, I discovered the first babies, already black with
decomposition, scattered across the road like rubbish.
Yes, those of us who got into Sabra and Chatila before the murderers
left have our memories. The flies racing between the reeking bodies and
our faces, between dried blood and reporter's notebook, the hands of
watches still ticking on dead wrists. I clambered up a rampart of earth
- an abandoned bulldozer stood guiltily nearby - only to find, once I
was atop the mound, that it swayed beneath me. And I looked down
to find faces, elbows, mouths, a woman's legs protruding through the
soil. I had to hold on to these body parts to climb down the other side.
Then there was the pretty girl, her head surrounded by a halo of
clothes pegs, her blood still running from a hole in her back. We had
burst into the yard of her home, desperate to avoid the Israeli-uniformed
militiamen who still roamed the camp; coming in by the back door, we
had found her body as the murderers left by the front door.
And as I walked through the carnage on 18 September - the last day of
the three-day massacre - with Loren Jenkins of The Washington Post,
a fierce, tough, Colorado reporter, I remember how he stopped in
shock and disgust. And then, with as much energy as his lungs could
summon in the sweet, foul air, he shouted, "SHARON!" so loudly that
the name echoed off the crumpled walls above the bodies. "He's
responsible for this fucking mess," Jenkins roared. And that, just over
four months later - in more diplomatic words and in a report in which
the murderers were called "soldiers" - was what the Israeli commission
of enquiry decided. Sharon, who was minister of defence, bore "personal
responsibility", the Kahan commission stated, and recommended his
removal from office. Sharon resigned.
And so today, in this fetid, awful place, where Lebanese Muslim
militiamen were - three years later - to kill hundreds more Palestinians
in a war which produced no official inquiries, where scarcely 20 per
cent of the survivors still live, where brown mud and rubbish now
covers the mass grave of 600 of the 1982 victims, the Palestinians wait
to see if their tormentor will hold the highest office in the state of
Israel.
"Ariel Sharon was responsible," a well-dressed young man shouted at
us from an apartment balcony yesterday morning. And who could
disagree? Israel had invaded Lebanon on 6 June 1982 with a plan -
known to Sharon but not vouchsafed to his Likud prime minister,
Menachem Begin - to advance all the way to Beirut and surround
Yasser Arafat's Palestine Liberation Organisation guerrillas in the
Lebanese capital. Officially named "Operation Peace for Galilee" (the
real Israeli military codename was "Snowball"), the invasion was
supposedly a response to PLO rocket attacks across the Israeli border.
But the rocket attacks had followed a series of Israeli air-raids on
Lebanon which had ended a UN-brokered ceasefire and which were
supposedly in "retaliation" for the attempted murder of the Israeli
ambassador to London - though his would-be killers came from the
Abu Nidal group which had
1.  The delusion that individual advancement is made by crushing
others.
2.  The tendency to worry about things that cannot be changed.
3.  Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot do it
ourselves.
4.  Refusing to set aside trivial preferences.
5.  Neglecting development and refinement of the mind, and not
6.  Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do.
 Far from being a relatively harmless "soft" drug, cannabis can drive
 people temporarily insane as well as harming the heart, lungs and immune
 system, British scientists said today.
 Studies showed that the drug can have serious effects on both mental and
 physical health.
 Dr Andrew Johns, from the Institute of Psychiatry in London, said
 regular cannabis use led to acute psychological problems in a high
 proportion of people.
 One study found 15 per cent of cannabis users identified psychotic
 symptoms such as hearing voices or irrational feelings of persecution.
 A number of reports, reviewed by Dr Johns in the British Journal of
 Psychiatry, suggested the drug could induce psychosis in people with no
 history of severe mental illness.
One of my pet theories is that pothead paranoia is generated by the
extrinsic legal risks which are involved with cannabis, thanks to our
psychotic governments.
By the way, does anyone know what percentage of the total population
shows psychotic symptoms?
 plain text unless the HTML is essential to the message. Hyperlinks and
 attachments still work with plain text emails. Not only is plain text
 easier to read, but HTML takes 4 times as much bandwidth as the same
 message in plain text, and fills up inboxes quite rapidly.
So true.  Plain text is very environment-friendly.
Why is there MIME/HTML mail?  The only reason I can figure is that
those webmail sites use MIME to post.
 This is an excellent site for those who know nothing about the dangers to our
 society coming from the New Age movement and those who wish to learn more
 about this very extensive topic.  Hannah Newman, a Jewish researcher who
 lives in Israel, recently sent out a notice about her site as follows:
 "My new, greatly expanded and updated research on New Age antisemitism is
 now on line.
 Go to:
 http://homestead.virtualjerusalem.com/antisemitism/index.html"
Is anti-Semitism more prevalent than anti-[insert cultural identity
marker] in the US?  I've seen quite a bit of anti-hickism and
anti-blackism, but haven't run into much anti-Semitism, unless it's of
the anti-Arab variety I've witnessed on the silver and blue screens.
Even after having lived in New York for three years, I haven't seen
any, besides the same level of stereotypical BS that I see most other
cultural groups suffering:  the drunken Mick, the flashy Dago, the
mouthy JAP.  Hell, around here they make fun of the Southern Baptists
(the blathering Biblethumper, Apocalyptic White Trash).
As for New Age anti-Semitism, I've yet to run into any in my years of
research and casual surfing, unless they're using crypto-anti-Semitic
symbols, though I'm a pretty good at ciphering that esoteric stuff.
``
I just gave that site a read and the one thing I'm happy to see is the
header "Welcome to one Jew's analysis..."  If that hadn't been there,
I would have mistaken this for some Xian fundie page.  Hannah Newman
seems to equate Theosophy with the whole New Age and the New Age
sounds like the Nazis, focusing particularly on eliminating the Jews.
More tribal-centric spook stories.  Is there any fun in creating such
realities?  I know P.K. Dick enjoyed a more egocentric version, but he
had his problems.
Even though it's a load of crap, thanks for the link!  This is some
fun reading.  I enjoy a good paranoid screed now and then.
I'm open-minded, so I'll let you know if I become convinced, after a
more thorough reading.
By the way, I wonder how the Erisians, Subgenii and Discordians fit
in?
 So by default the people with the less body count are the "Bad
 Guys?"  Hmm Let me see, I have a grenade launcher, an enemy soldier
 fires at me, I launch back killing him and his surrounding soldiers?
 Just one of the many scenarios that can play out in the dynamics of
 battle
It seems that you're under the black/white, Good Guys/Bad Guys
dualistic illusion.  This is a much more complex reality.
If these pages, whose URLs you mention, are the truth, that all these
armed Arabs actually have ammo, wouldn't there be photos of Israelis
swinging from lampposts and masses of dead strewn through the
streets?  They're armed and pissed.  Those LAWs featured on both pages
(same photo) would make one hell of a mess.  Where's the carnage?  Why
the large difference in the body counts?
The Rotter page you mentioned shows a bunch of pissed off Arabs.  I'd
be angry too if I lived under the conditions they do.
The One Soul page mentions Israel granting the PA rule over
Palestinian reservations.  Isn't the PA a puppet of the Israelis?
Don't the Palestinian people hate the PA?  Maybe all that I've read is
wrong.  Maybe the Firesign Theatre is right.
I want to know who has the superior force and tactics.  Propaganda
from both sides shows mere skirmishes.  Assuming easily that the
Israelis have the advantage, the ultimate high ground of the sky, why
haven't they pressed the attack?  Do they plan a war of attrition?
But as for body count numbers... Can I get a recount?  My point
 being, just how accurate are those numbers? Do you know for sure?
 Are issues like that still open to question even after they've been
 reported by the major media outlets? I would hope so.
Do you mean to say the Israelis have no media outlets to the outside
world?  You give URLs for two pages that show no numbers.  Do you have
any sources for the Truth other than propaganda photo spreads?
 As for the catchy quote...  People are free to say anything they
 feel is true... I don't even know the Anon guy, maybe he was famous,
 maybe not, but if he was, does it make his statement anymore
 correct?
 Jamie
Famous does not make it correct.  I'd be happy with a book of good
quotes from normal people.  People are free to say anything, true or
not, whether they believe it or not.  My quote and mention of trains
and relocation are examples of black humor--Socratic, ironic and
sardonic.  My foul mood inspired their inclusion.
I'm in a foul mood because, by nature I seek balance, yet I
continually see one-sided opinions.  "Israeli War Crimes" "Israeli War
Crimes- NOT!"  Can't people be honest with themselves and admit that
acts on both sides are criminal or do we subscribe to the idea that
the ends justify the means?
Do I take sides?  Yes.  I back the people who are sick of the constant
warfare.  I believe the peace-loving people on any side of any
conflict are being screwed by greedhead leaders whose best control
method against them is division.  What can we do about it?  Education
is the only thing I can come up with that may do some good.
 "Reality--The perception of truth based on observation"
   -Jamie
   Look, I have a cool quote now...
Not so sure about that, Jamie.
Reality exists independent of observation--a very strange, uncertain
reality, albeit.
Perception is flawed, considering the minuscule portion of the
electromagnetic spectrum we are able to perceive, thus the merit of
observation is questionable.
Define "truth".  Nevermind.  I'm being a tired shit.
I just heard this from the "anarcho-machismo-r-us" group:
**
Those pussies from Montreal - the "anarcho-situationists" - are
planning something called "Steal Something Day", which is really
nothing more than a feeble extension of Adbusters' equally pathetic
"Buy Nothing Day".
As if some kids stealing minor items (or even cars) will concern The
Capitalist System. It's insulting to anyone who HAS to steal every
day JUST TO SURVIVE. It gives power to those who are prosperous
enough to CHOOSE whether or not to steal. Historically, the
oppressed have always HAD to steal: they had no CHOICE.
"Steal Something Day" is patronising, minor-league stuff. Perhaps it
will give a small thrill to middle-class "rebels" who are too timid
to tackle the REAL problem: the Capitalist Bastards who are
oppressing us and destroying the planet.
No. We know who the Enemy is - we have to hit them where it HURTS:
we have to SEDUCE THEIR WIVES. It won't be easy, but at least we
know those Capitalist Chicks prefer REAL MEN like ourselves to fat,
podgy, Capitalist Pigs or timid middle-class geeks.
[CTRL] Steal Something Day!
2000-11-11 Thread Mark McHugh
-Caveat Lector-
 A - I N F O S  N E W S  S E R V I C E
http://www.ainfos.ca/
Celebrate
   STEAL SOMETHING DAY
November 24, 2000
  Participate by participating!
   a shameless 24-hour stealing spree!
 http://adbusters.tao.ca
For the past nine years, a few self-described "culture jammers" from
Adbusters Magazine have dubbed the last Friday in November "Buy
Nothing Day."
From their stylish home base in Vancouver's upscale suburb of
Kitsilano, the Adbusters' brain trust has encouraged conscientious
citizens worldwide to "relish [their] power as a consumer to change
the economic environment." In their words, Buy Nothing Day "[p]roves
how empowering it is to step out of the consumption stream for even
a day."
The geniuses at Adbusters have managed to create the perfect
feel-good, liberal, middle-class activist non-happening. A day when
the more money you make, the more influence you have (like every
other day). A day which, by definition, is insulting to the millions
of people worldwide who are too poor or marginalized to be
considered "consumers."
It's supposed to be a 24-hour moratorium on spending, but ends up
being a moralistic false-debate about whether or not you should
really buy that loaf of bread today or ... wait for it ... tomorrow!
Well, this year, while the Adbusters cult enjoys yet another Buy
Nothing Day, accompanied by their fancy posters, stickers, TV and
radio advertisements and slick webpages, a few self-described
anarcho-situationists from Montreal's East End are inaugurating
Steal Something Day.
Unlike Buy Nothing Day, when people are asked to "participate by not
participating," Steal Something Day demands that we "participate by
participating." Instead of downplaying or ignoring the capitalists,
CEOs, landlords, small business tyrants, bosses, PR hacks, yuppies,
media lapdogs, corporate bureaucrats, politicians and cops who are
primarily responsible for misery and exploitation in this world,
Steal Something Day demands that we steal from them, without
discrimination.
The Adbusters' intelligentsia tell us that they're neither "left nor
right," and have proclaimed a non-ideological crusade against
overconsumption. Steal Something Day, on the other hand, identifies
with the historic and contemporary resistance against the causes of
capitalist exploitation, not its symptoms. If you think
overconsumption is scary, wait until you hear about capitalism and
imperialism.
Unlike the misplaced Buy Nothing Day notion of consumer empowerment,
Steal Something Day promotes empowerment by urging us to
collectively identify the greedy bastards who are actually
responsible for promoting misery and boredom in this world. Instead
of ignoring them, Steal Something Day encourages us to make their
lives as uncomfortable as possible.
As we like to say in Montreal: dranger les riches dans leurs niches!
And remember, we're talking about stealing, not theft. Stealing is
just. Theft is exploitative. Stealing is when you take a yuppie's
BMW for a joyride, and crash into a parked Mercedes just for the
hell of it. Theft is when you take candy from a baby's mouth.
Stealing is the re-distribution of wealth from rich to poor Theft is
making profits at the expense of the disadvantaged and the natural
environment. Stealing is an unwritten a tax on the rich. Theft is
taxing the poor to subsidize the rich. Stealing is nothing more than
a tax on the rich. There is solidarity in stealing, but property is
nothing but theft.
So, don't pay for that corporate newspaper, but steal all of them
from the box. Get some friends together and go on a "shoplifting
"spree at the local chain supermarket or upscale mall. With an even
larger mob, get together and steal from the local chain book or
record store. Pilfer purses and wallets from easily identified
yuppies and business persons. Skip out on rent. Get a credit card
under a fake name and don't pay. Keep what you can use, and give
away everything else in the spirit of mutual aid that is the
hallmark of Steal Something Day.
Download our detourned poster http://adbusters.tao.ca, make copies
and stick it up wherever you can. And don't forget, send your
scamming and stealing tips to us at [EMAIL PROTECTED].
See you next Steal Something Day which, unlike Buy Nothing Day,
happens every day of the year.
 He looks drunk to me, or at least has a bad hangover, or perhaps flesh eating
 Mexican brown heroin (the latter is meant as humor).
 Karen Hughes looked really bad on CNN today also. No makeup, face looking broken
out. Worse every
 day. What's going on? Maybe they got hit by chemtrails?
JUST POLITICS
MTV asked young Americans who Al Gore reminds them most of. For 11-12%
each,
the answers were my high school guidance counselor, my dad, and the
captain
of my school's debate team. Top response (54%): A traveling salesman.
