Re: Re: [Elecraft] K3 wih - PA3AKE High Pergormance Front End
David, May I get back to you later this evening off-list with some thoughts about this approach. An advantage gained by using a variable IF is that the close-in phase noise of the first mixer's fixed frequency LO injection can be very low indeed, but there are other disadvantages. The gain of Martein's front end between the antenna port and roofing filter input is negative, about -7 db depending on the band in use, since neither a post mixer amp nor a preamp is used neither of which is desireable nor necessary. This means that the IF's noise figure has to be low in the region of 2 db. Also the Input IP3 of the IF has to be +50dbm, or better if at all possible, to take full advantage of this front end's performance. 73, Geoff GM4ESD David Cutter G3UNA wrote on Monday, April 14, 2008 12:57 PM I would like to consider this front end and the K3 as tunable IF, does that sound do-able? Re: [Elecraft] Introducing the MadelynGram :-)
Sounds like me but I have just ordered mine. I have read most of everything I could download (two full loose-leaf notebooks), still have a bit to go. But I have LONG time to wait (ordered 3/30). I had a K2, REALLY impressed by the receive but the radio just didn't work out (I'll leave it at that). Read all the download stuff on the K2 and then when I made the decision, I started reading the K3 stuff and ordered it mainly on the performance of the K2 receive. This wait will be the slowest time of my life. I will have to reread the books when it gets closer to my ship date as I will have forgotten everything by then. Re: [Elecraft] Buddipoles and KX1
Hi Tom, The Buddipole is a great product with Elecraft-like support. I have both the Buddipole and the KX-1 and as a portable system, it works fine. Since you are going to be a newly minted ham, I would not recommend a Buddipole right now. I would take the suggestion of the others and build a 44 or 66 foot doublet and feed it with twin lead or build a resonant dipole. Any of these simple antennas will out perform a Buddipole and will give you some basic antenna knowledge. Using QRP can be very frustrating for a new ham and with the poor band conditions you will need all the help you can get. So much for the practical! If you are hell-bent on a Buddipole or portable use is all you intend to do then order it with a four or five section shock-corded whip. I find those telescoping whips too easy to bend or break and the dipole arrangement almost useless unless you have loads of time to put up a taller guyed mast. I use it only as a vertical. In the park I usually just bungi the mast section to a fence post for support and use one elevated radial. Above the mast section go an extension arm, the coil, another extension arm and then the shock–corded whip. I then connect the antenna to the KX-1 and run the shorting wire up and down the loading coil for the best signal. That’s it. It takes just a few minutes to set up. In the car I drive down by the Atlantic Ocean (oceans are your DX friend), attach the same arrangement to a ball mount, leave out the radial and I’m on the air. To me, the time taken for setup and teardown is very important since it promotes spontaneity and on many occasions, like a lunch break, time is important. [Elecraft] AGC hang after transmitting
Hi all, There has been a lot of posts lately of an apparent problem with the TX mic gain being low initially or after a recorded message finishes. I have never noticed this, but I have the exact opposite problem. Occasionally when ending an SSB transmission, the RX initially has reduced gain and I can see the S-meter decaying as the receiver recovers. It doesn't happen every time. I am not sure whether there was always a strong signal in the receiver immediately prior to transmitting when this happens. Anybody else experiencing this? [Elecraft] troubleshooting the KNB2
Sorry to have been away for so long. I've been busy. My students (5th-8th grade) and I have finished the K2, finished the KNB2, almost finished the KSB2 (I hope we will have that done today), and haven't started on the KPA100 yet. K2 works great. Lovely receiver! But, it appears that the KNB2 is doing nothing. Our school sits practically under a 240KV power line. We have constant pulse-type power line noise that kicks the noise floor up about 6dB-8dB on 80M-30M. The NB on our IC-706MkII takes it right out. The KNB2 appears to do nothing. For testing I have been using my heat-gun's electric motor as a noise source. Noise is plainly audible. NB appears to have no effect. What I have determined: 1. 6V good (5.98V); 2. diode are good (conduct in proper direction) and installed correctly; 3. threshold line switches properly; 4. Pulse width line switches properly; 5. blanker on/off line switches properly; 6. 6NB switches properly; 7. U1 is showing good gain between input (pin 4) and output (pin 8); 8. No blanking pulse on GATE. Since the receiver works with the KNB2 installed, that implies that the BPF is OK. Gain at U1 implies U1 is OK. All the control lines switch which implies that U3 is OK. Visual inspection shows no improper component placement. Diodes, transistors, and ICs are oriented correctly. I have an HP 180A analog scope. I see signal (how I determined U1 has gain) but haven't had success getting it to trigger on the noise pulses. So, anyone have any suggestions for further trouble shooting? -- 73 de Brian, WB6RQN Brian Lloyd - brian HYPHEN wb6rqn AT lloyd DOT com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] re signal level of I F output on K3
What is the level output of the I F output on the K3? I'm trying to use the Kenwood SM-220 panadaptor with mine but can't get enough output from the I F of the K3. I've got on loan an I F amp @ 8.215 mhz set at 15 db gain from Jack of Clifton Laboratories to try and cure the problem but even with the amp I need a minimum of 200 microvolts signal input to the antenna jack of the K3 before I can even detect it on the SM-220 panadaptor I F input even with the 15 db amplifier. Looking at the schematic of the K3, there should be approximately the same level coming out of the 8.215 khz I F as what the received signal is. The manual for the K3 does NOT give any information on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. [Elecraft] K2 DATA port... finally.
Hi Elecrafters !!! I finally did my K2 universal DATA port. I put the schematic on my website... http://www.flickr.com/photos/va2ss/ I say «universal» because I also add audio transformer to keep ground loop away and a trimmer to the input, so you will be able to keep mic preamp setting used in SSB mode. When using RTTY mode with the K2, it already bypass SSB compressor setting. So that way, you can now virutally connect anything to the DATA port TNC, NUE-PSK modem, computer sound card. It will act like the DATA port of a Yaesu FT-817 familly. I also add another connector for futur project. an external VFO dial with keypad. Stay tuned !!! [Elecraft] OT-Noalox grease
As reported to me by W4YOK via a letter from the mfg, Ideal, who makes Noalox, the product that is used to mate dis-similar metals, is not actually a conductor. It does have vy small particles of metal in the grease but those can not really be counted on the conduct, sez mfg. Instead, it is made to retard water and to strip oxidation automatically off aluminum. Maybe that is why it works so well on the joints of yagis telescopic or swaged elements. I have used this kind of product for years on antennas and --taken apart years later-- the stuff makes disassembly a snap. 73, Charles Harpole [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
