Re: [Elecraft] K3s in WPX M/S - WOW!
Hi Bob: Thanks for the report! Re: your comment regarding the 50 and 100HZ bandwidth. I am surprised to hear what you report. I have the 200Hz filter in FL5. I just put the Elecraft XG-1 on ANT1 and tuned to the 7040 freq. With the bandwidth set to NORM (400 Hz) I show a S9 signal and an audio level (dbV Alternate display) of 31.7. When I narrow the bandwidth to 50 Hz, signal strength stays the same at S9 and the audio level stays the same. I do have 8 dB of gain set into FL5 where the 200 Hz filter lives. Without that additional gain, the S meter drops to S7 and the audio level drops to 30.5 dB when that filter switches in. I found it very usable at the 50 - 100 Hz bandwidths. 73, Ken K3IU K3 #202 ~ Bob Evans wrote: I finally had a chance to put both of my K3s on really good antennas (2 el 40@ 140', 5 el 20 @ 130', 5 el 15 @ 120, 5 el 10 @ 110', 3 el 80 (delta loops) @ 110', 140' shunt fed on 160M, 600' beverage pointed NE). Our main goal was to find out how the K3s interacted and whether I need to put in the overload mod on the KXV3. We ended up with 2002 contacts and 733 multipliers (2.8M points) even though I got sick in mid-contest and had to take 12 hours off. There were only two of us operating, so that was a severe blow to our score. Anyway, the K3s both had I.C.E. multiband band pass filters and we were able to operate without bothering the other op. In most cases, we never knew the other op was on except when we were at a second harmonic. I actually only heard it when we were on ~7020 and ~14040. These 2 antennas were 10 feet apart and both rigs were at 1 KW. Even then, we were able to operate within 10 KHz of the second harmonic. I was amazed. No problem on S/N 752, but #234 indicated a HI PA TEMP when we transmitted on the 160 tower and used our beverage antenna which was only 100' away from the tower. The PA TEMP was not high, but apparently the overload made it appear that way. I believe I remember that the rig dropped itself down to 5 watts when this occurred. I don't want to analyze the failure, I'm just going to install the mod kit (which I've already gotten). This test was simply to make sure I needed to do the mod before I opened things up. ;-) We had 2 amplifiers fail, some computer glitches and the KRC2 wouldn't drive the 6 pack switching arrangement (could be bad wiring on my part or low voltage), but the K3s seemed bulletproof and felt VERY solid throughout the contest. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - 50 Hz Shift
Yes, my experience also. 50 Hz steps are too much at the narrower DSP filter settings. 10 Hz would be good and BW less than 200 Hz. 73, Bob N6WG - Original Message - From: Roland Guidry [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, May 27, 2008 4:30 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 - 50 Hz Shift Working the WPX contest this weekend, I tried using the Shift when the DSP filter was as narrow as 50-100 Hz for some very weak contacts due to QRM. K3 performed beautifully on CW I might add, but I think the shift adjustment in 50 Hz increments is too large. I would often lose the station I was trying to work. I would have perferred something smaller even as low as 10 Hz. Is it just me, or is this something that can be menu adjusted in the future. I think this would only be needed in CW/Digital modes. RE: [Elecraft] K3s in WPX M/S - WOW!
Ken, I just got a note about this from Vic, K2VCO, which I hope he posts to the reflector. This is, apparently, a known bug in the firmware which will be fixed in the future. For the time being, the workaround is to set IIR to ON in the FL:x menu. After Vic mentioned that, I sort of remember it crossing the reflector, but had dropped to the bottom of my priority bucket. ;-) Thanks for the note and I'll do the workaround until the firmware fix arrives. I really don't use anything less than 150 Hz very often, but it will be nice to have it available when I'm playing around. 73, Bob K5WA -Original Message- From: Ken K3IU [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, May 27, 2008 11:51 AM To: Bob Evans Cc: Elecraft Reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3s in WPX M/S - WOW! I've only had my K-3 for less than two weeks and I am no contester by any means. In fact, I am a rather little pistol. But I must say that I find the K-3 absolutely amazing. Compared to my Orion II it is much quieter. I keep discovering new and unique features every day. I also can't imagine anyone selling a K-3 except for financial reasons. I suppose some folks simply get tired of staring at the same radio and try something new. If they do, I think they may regret it. At this point, my main wish is for a nice pan adapter which I do find useful on my ICOM 756 Pro and on the Orion II, although, the pan adapter on that radio could stand some improvement. Has anyone found a way of using the commands on the ACC connector, so that PTT to the transverter will only be activated when the transverter band has been selected by the K3?? I have just found out that there is a bug that causes a gain reduction just for these two bandwidths if they are set for FIR filters and not IIR. You can fix it now by switching IIR ON, and when Elecraft fixes the bug you can choose either IIR or FIR for these filters as you prefer. To switch between IIR and FIR, tap '7' on the keypad when you're in any filter setup menu entry (e.g., CONFIG:FLx BW). When you say just these two bandwidths...I thought the FLxBW settings were for the crystal filters, not the DSP so how do you change this setting for 50hz when it's not even a filter in the menu? This wasn't supposed to be a permanent user interface, I think. Anyway this parameter only relates to the DSP, not to the crystal filter. Since I have the 200hz filter in slot 4, do I change it to IIR on? It doesn't matter which filter you have selected. Re: [Elecraft] K3 in CQ WPX CW
Sometimes I don't want a flat response curve. The higher slope values tend to compress signals together and makes it difficult to separate them in a pileup on the basis of strength as experienced as audio. Sometimes it helps if stronger signals sound louder. I would like to see a way to store different AGC setups so I can recall them at the tap of a button when the particular demands of contest conditions change (maybe using the message buttons). Or is this already a K3 capability? Lyle KK7P wrote: The AGC slow, fast or off as set from the factory did not handle MONSTER signals well... Try CONFIG:AGC SLP and set it higher than the default of 10. 12 seems to work pretty well for realy strong signals, and 15 will virtually flatten the response curve. The RIT was not as easy to use as on the K2. I was used to setting the RIT and just turning it on and off when needed with the K2. The RIT seems to reset to 0... It works as expected here (RIT is remembered if I tap RIT to toggle it on and off), but it does reset to zero if I change bands. My guess is that the 30 ohms happens when the emitter is negative with respect to the collector and represents what the meter displays as a result of the emitter base junction breaking down because its maximum reverse bias has been exceeded. The voltage at which emitter base junctions zener is quite small. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Smart PTT for transverter??
Hi Paul, I was investigated little bit this (as not fully satified by KEY OUT functionality). Looking to schematics of KXV board there some levels like related to TX/RX... Seems to be possible to derive some PTT or +TX driver from such signals on this board and put some RCA port to the rear panel (to the cover instaed of fan unit - talking about K3/10). But this is to be very carefuly tested and now only as idea (maybe some f/w change of KEY OUT will be faster than this investigation...). But basic possibility (and without touching internal signals) is to use band/trns mapping on 15pin ACC port - simply make transverter PTT disabled/enabled based on band or trns data on this port. Or you can use only pin #7 in XVTR ON, hope this is on in XVTR mode only, not tested! Let us know your experience, 73! At the moment, with the transverter in standby, and me operating on 6m, everytime I transmit it operates the PTT to the transverter too. Has anyone found a way of using the commands on the ACC connector, so that PTT to the transverter will only be activated when the transverter band has been selected by the K3?? I've only recently become interested in 6M, up until now lacking an antenna. So, today I attempted to do the TXG calibration on 50 MHz. Using two different dummy loads I was unable to accomplish the calibration at either power level, the result was an indicated output power far in excess of that requested and a very high indicated SWR (the tuner was in BYPASS mode). Yes, I have. A few weeks ago when I tried to reply to a message it said something to the effect that I had to join before I could send the message. That was strange, because I have been a member for three or four years. I attempted to argue with Mr. machine, by stating that I already was a member but to no avail. I finally gave up and just rejoined. I'm not sure why that happens but the cure is to simply rejoin and everything should be okay. I hadn't opened it up since I got it back and never bothered to check it on all bands at that time. I'm watching with great interest at how these 6M problems play out. I really don't want to send it back again, shipping costs are expensive. I did learn one thing, when you're in ATU BYPASS mode, you're not really bypassing all components in the ATU. I guess kind of a pseudo bypass. My K3/10 is a kit, #501. It came with the ATU, which didn't respond to the I/O buss from the get go, along with a couple other things. I thought at the time it would have been nice to have the KANT board to fall back on. I got the ATU because of the dual antenna ports. In hindsight, I would recommend anyone buying a K3 hold off on the ATU until the K3 is shipped, then order it. That way you will always have a fallback if the ATU fails. I'm not knocking Elecraft, the service I got and am still getting is great, and I feel it will all work out. [Elecraft] K2: 80m 17m Weak RX, no TX
Greetings, I just completed the Step 3 alignment on a K2. On 80m and 17m I have weak RX and no TX power. All other bands seem to work fine. The problem first became known when performing the Step 3, RX pre-alignment procedure. I couldn't hear any appreciable difference in receive audio when tuning L3 and L4 from a signal sent from another transmitter (set to the same frequency as the K2), sitting right next to the K2. I set L3 and L4 1.5 turns from top, as that's what worked well for the initial 40m alignment in Step 2. I continued on with the alignment procedures for the other bands in sequence and they tuned up just fine (by ear, so no quantitative measurements are available). When I got to 17m I had the same issue again. The other bands (15m, 10m and 12m) all went well, however. I had the same problems with the TX alignment. 80m adjustments of L3 and L4 and 17m adjustments of C32 and C34 showed no power output on my external wattmeter (Bird 43). On 20m~15m and 10m-12m I had no trouble getting full power output, however. On all bands except 80m and 17m the RX seems to work just fine. With TX power, everything seems to work fine with the same exception. What could I have missed? I thought my understanding of the alignment procedure was thorough. I'm not an RF engineer. As such, I'm at a disadvantage. I'm an experienced builder of many electronic devices, but this is my first transceiver. Any constructive advice would be appreciated. [Elecraft] K3 - 6 Meters - Observaton
I cam home this evening to look at my K3 on 6 meters. All I have now is a dummy load, but never had the K3 on 6 meters. Here is what I found Hooking the dummy load to the HF antenna port (goes from the K3 to the amp to the watt meter, to the tuner (bypassed) to a coax switch) and then to the dummy load. The k3 acted flaky...and the tuner would tune it, but it would not stay tune and the SWR would go nuts and the power were back way down. Hooking the dummy load to the K3 with all the other stuff in lineworked great for the 5 minutes I tested it. No issues at all. Stayed at 100 watts to the dummy load. So, I am sure the HF stuff was messing with the internal tuner of the K3. It will be interesting to know the details of the fix. [Elecraft] K3: Temporary workaround allows 6-m operation at high power
As I mentioned in my last email, we're working on a new beta firmware release that will fix the 6-m power shutdown problem. Meanwhile, there's a simple workaround that, used with caution, will let you operate at high power on 6 m with the existing firmware: 1. Locate the PA TEMP menu entry 2. Tap the '1' on the keypad until you see R ONLY (receive only) instead of T AND R. 3. Exit the menu. ** CAUTION ** If you select R ONLY, the fans on the KPA3 module will only be allowed to change speeds in *receive* mode. We use this undocumented feature in our lab to test the 100-W PA's performance at elevated temperatures. If the fans were off at the start of a TUNE (or keydown) period, they'll stay off until you unkey. The use of R ONLY will not cause excessive PA temperatures as long as you unkey the rig often (say, at least once every 20 seconds). The fans will adjust their speed the instant you unkey (between code elements in CW mode), release PTT, etc. But this feature should not be used if you anticipate long key-down times in voice or data modes. (If you're concerned, you could manually set the fan speed to one of the higher levels using the KPA3 menu entry. FAN 2 is still pretty quiet, and normally doesn't kick in until you hit 50C.) You'll be able to go back to the normal T AND R setting once you update to our next beta firmware release. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Getting Ready For The 2nd RX
Hi All, I got a chance to briefly see the 2nd RX for the K3 at Dayton. Sure looks like a winner! Hopefully they will start going out the door at Aptos soon. In the meantime, those of us who are waiting for one need to do some serious thinking about just how we set up RX #1 and RX #2 as to filters. Unless you are loading both of them up, you want to be sure you get the ones you want in the right RX from the get-go. As someone recently posted, it takes a couple of hours plus to install the 2nd RX. So it isn't going to be easy to get it in and out if you want to change filters in RX #1. RX #2 sits on top of RX #1, if I understand it correctly, so changing filters in RX #1 will be something of a chore. Hope I get mine right the first time, but bet I don't Dave W7AQK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] RE: K2: 80m 17m Weak RX, no TX
Duhh! I'm so stupid! I remember reading in the manual that some caps are marked with a zero and some aren't. I still reversed Caps: 12/15 and 35/31. Cap 12/15 values are 560. Cap 35/31 are marked 560. Guess what I did? Yup. I read value 560 and placed MARKING 560 in its place. Argh! What an idiot I am! Now I have to re-reverse them, so 80/17 will work right. Yipes! At least they're easy to get to! I'm kicking myself HARD for that idiotic blunder! ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] mail-archive.com/elecraft
mail-archive has upgraded their hardware, for the first time in 2.5 years. They did it on the 25th. I've dropped them a note politely inquiring if there's something that needs to be done on the mailman.qth.net server or if the problem is at their end. Until then, you can use Nabble or Google Groups, or the mailman.qth.net server itself. Leigh/WA5ZNU Peter ZL1PWD wrote: Is the mail-archive server down or has my link gone bad?
