Re: [Elecraft] Noise level..?
I whole heartedly agree with both of you!! You would think the intelligence level of the members of this list could understand this reflector IS NOT the place to post off-topic subjects, but it doesn't seem to matter to those who are inclined to post look at ME emails here. Eric recently re-posted the reflector guidelines AGAIN and it did not matter to those few who continue to post off-topic items I kept trying until I now have generated successful Outlook rules that dump everything from the Elecraft reflector that DOES NOT have [ELECRAFT] K3 and [ELECRAFT] P3 in the subject line. So now 90% of my Elecraft reflector emails goes directly to the Trash. Re: [Elecraft] Suggestions on Antenna Analyzers
I have the AIM UHF and love it. I knew nothing about antennas when I bought it, but it enabled me to learn a lot. It tells you just about everything going on from the connector in the shack to the ends of the wire. It can be a bit overwhelming to see all that data that means absolutely nothing to you, but I took it as a challenge to learn what it all meant. Think of it as an analyzer that you will grow into... It also analyzes transmission line. I have a 250' run of LMR-400 between shack and top of tower. I had a connector go bad in the box at the base of the tower, the AIM found the break within about a foot or so ... I could have spent days trying to find it by other methods. It is also VERY handy to have those computer graphs. Save each as you make changes to an antenna, overlay them to instantly see what factors changed with your last mods. Periodically run new scans and compare to old scans to find subtle degradations from weathering, etc. 73, Steve AD0ES On Mar 31, 2014, at 10:00 AM, elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net wrote: The AIM units are popular and highly advertised, sold by a reputable distributor, and are quite powerful, but they are of little use to someone who hasn't studied antennas and transmission lines a LOT. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] P3 Mounting Tip
To conserve desk space in my shack, I've always set my P3s on top of the K3s (two for SO2R contesting). Because I have the K3s tilted up with the fold-down bail, the P3s tended to slide down. Then I found a solution so simple that I'm ashamed to say I hadn't thought of it before -- small Velcro tabs on the front feet of the P3, to mating tabs on the top of the K3. As our friends in the UK might say, it works a treat! Re: [Elecraft] Windows 7 configuration to allow seven USB 2.0 devices to work together in a multitasking enviorment?
USB was designed to handle hundreds of applications. USB has nothing to do with RS232 com ports. The bridge is made in the driver software that tells the USB to behave as if it were a RS232 device. I suspect you have conflicting drivers. The solution is to change to drivers that do not conflict. That can be done by changing to multi serial port devices of the same kind. 73 Fred, AE6QL -Original Message- From: John Lawrence j123...@aol.com Sent: Apr 1, 2014 12:39 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Windows 7 configuration to allow seven USB 2.0 devices to work together in a multitasking enviorment? I did go thru all the computers and update drivers. My approach will be to save off SP3+132 upgrades and copy of IE-8 onto a flash drive (which is also going to archive my HD data files) for future re-build. That will likely be the point that I decide to cut internet connection from this computer. I have a newer laptop running win-8 which may see migration of my internet activities and e-mail (but is not convenient for ham radio apps and external accessories that I run - no PCI buss). PS: My wife decided to buy a new Laptop with i7 processor and 8GB memory and was able to get it installed with win-7. She is happy with it, so we will likely dispose of the computer we just re-built for her. At least it will run fine for whomever gets it! Further to what Fred said: USB is unrelated to com ports *except* if you are using serial to USB cable or converter. In that case an open com port is assigned. Much has been written here about the driver problems with certain cheap cables so I won't repeat except to say we need more detail in order to help you. This is not quite as tedious as manually programming a BaoFeng UV5r, but it is really close. And the BaoFeng can be programmed using a nice utility called CHIRP that lets you enter settings in a spreadsheet and then press a button to transfer them en bloc. Not so for the K3. You have to do it all by hand. Which brings me to my point. Could there be a couple of programmer's commands added to set the memories? Then maybe someone could write a nice Python program to do it with a computer, or maybe port CHIRP. Maybe something like: ZFxxx145.3205; (set frequency) ZTxxx088.5+; (set tone) ZLxxx*W1AW; (set label) where the xxx stands for memory slot 000 to 099. Also, while I'm at it, why are there only 5 slots in the label? After the *, there are only four free. Not enough for a typical call sign, or much of anything else. Maybe that is due to memory limitations? Taking the K3 apart and putting it back together reminded me what a lovely, precision piece of equipment it really is. Amazing what fits in that little box! [Elecraft] KX3 horizontal 40 meter antenna loop feed connection - HOW?
Newbie Dave, KX3 owner with built in ATU. I have a loop antenna feed point line question. I know this is not an antenna group but I want something optimized for the KX3 and QRP. I have installed a 40 meter skywire horizontal loop antenna in my attic, 135 feet in length. I hope to use the antenna on 40-10 meters. I live in a condo complex, fortunately for me, on the 2nd floor. The distance from the feed point to the rig vertically is about 20 ft and about 5 ft horizontally through a ceiling. Coax or ladder line feed, most say ladder line for low loss? I am stumped, confused and bewildered about how to feed my KX3. Opinions are ALL over the map with NO consistency. I have researched the Skywire google and yahoo groups and the ARRL docs. Just tell me what works best for my KX3 and how to do it. If I feed with 450 ohm ladder line, how do I transition from the ladder line to the rig? Is it antenna ends to 20 ft of ladder line to the balun and then a short stub of coax? What is short, 1 to 5 ft? Do I cut the ladder line long and what do I do with excess? The ladder line has to stay mostly vertical? I have the BNC to binding post adapter as well. Can I just feed ladder line to the binding posts directly with maybe some kind of strain relief? It sorta works now with the antenna loop connected to an MFJ913 4:1 balun to RG8X coax to rig. SWR on 40 meters is about 2.0 to 2.2 across the band (low to high) as measured externally before connecting to the rig. Am I good enough? The ATU handles it quite nicely bringing it down to 1:1. I’ve tried feeding the coax directly, with no balun, but that made the SWR much worse externally, 5:1 and up. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 horizontal 40 meter antenna loop feed connection - HOW?
Ladder line doesn't like to be near stuff... Feed it with coax, even with a high SWR on the coax your losses will be negligible over that length. A 1:1 or 4:1 current balun at the feedpoint would probably be a good idea, but isn't a deal breaker... 73, Ross N4RP, who needs to get his 160m loop back up before the leaves come out ;) On 4/1/2014 5:26 PM, Esquer Dave wrote: Newbie Dave, KX3 owner with built in ATU. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 horizontal 40 meter antenna loop feed connection - HOW?
Dave, Opinions on antennas are connected with a lot of myths and it works for me opinions. You mmight want to read the Antenna and Transmission Line article on my website www.w3fpr.com. It is not filled with formulas and math, but can give you some idea of antenna system behavior. You say you have a 2.2 SWR across the 40 meter band, so that is quite OK, the KXAT3 will handle that with no problems, but you may need a tuner to keep the transmitter 'happy'. Your 20 feet of coax will not have significant loss on any of the HF bands, but do not coil it up in the field of the antenna. If it is too long, cut it off and terminate it in a BNC connector to match the KX3 (and the QRP 'standard'). Check the feedpoint impedance (or SWR) on all bands of interest. If it is above 10:1, then you may have some trouble matching it on those bands even with the KXAT3 - it all depends ---. You might try substituting a 1:1 balun for the 4:1 to see if you can achieve a better compromise between bands. In your situation, use ladder-line only as a last resort. Keep the feedline running at right angles from the radiator for as great a distance as possible so the feedline does not pick up RF from the antenna. You might find benefit from a balun at the antenna and an additional 1:1 current choke (often called a line isolator) at the transmitting end. If you do decide to feed with balanced line (300 ohm or 450 ohm will make little difference), use something like the Elecraft BL2 in the shack to transition to coax. With the close proximity for your radiator to the shack, you may experience problems with RF-in-the-shack just due to that proximity. If you confine your operation to QRP, it may not give you any problems, but if you increase power, the problems may become apparent. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/1/2014 5:26 PM, Esquer Dave wrote: Newbie Dave, KX3 owner with built in ATU. [Elecraft] REF: KX3 Unstable SWR Reading
Hi Tom, Reading this, I wondered if you might have something in your antenna system that is going non-linear with higher power - the symptoms seem consistent with that possibility. For instance, if you had something that was arcing (e.g., a surge protector), or if you had a balun with a ferrite core that was saturating. This would be particularly suspect if, like me, you were starting with a high VSWR and the KXPA was getting it down low - I have this situation right now on 80 meters. Dummy load testing as you suggest would be a good idea. jim Please ignore all the changes in font in my message - my email client does that just to mess with my head. The KXPA100 ATU tunes it right down to 1.1-1.2. Then when I start transmitting it jumps up between 2 and 3. This doesn't happen all of the time nor on all bands. I have worked with Dick and he has put a lot of effort into my concern, much of it off hours by the way. Great service and great concern demonstrated by Dick. Try to get a response from the big three at all-let alone on weekends. We ran traces on the tuning process and it shows a good tune right down to where it needs to be. However, the SWR then jumps up when I go to full power. I am not sure it is a real problem as the power meter shows I am getting out OK. But it is concerning to be transmitting 100 watts and seeing the SWR jump up to 3 after it has tuned down to 1.2. I don't believe it is in my antenna because I put an LDG tuner in the line and it tunes solid and stays there. I know gut feel isn't very scientific but I think there could be an issue with the SWR circuitry. At lower tuning powers it senses SWR OK, but with higher power levels it doesn't. It may well be that my SWR is varying and maybe the sensing circuits in the KXPA100 are just more sensitive than the LDG circuits, I don't know. All we really know at this point is that the traces look really good, the ATU takes the reported SWR down to more than acceptable values even when the antenna SWR is above 10. I may try putting a variable dummy load on it to see if I can duplicate the problem into a known stable load. Keep in mind that this is more of a nuisance item to me and I love the KX3/KXPA100 combination. 10m was wide open this weekend and I worked Japan, New Zealand, Hawaii, and China with a very minimal horizontal loop at 15 feet. I know this is anecdotal but I believe the low noise receiver and filtering made it possible. Good stuff!
