Re: [Elecraft] Possible phase noise question...

2014-07-01 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
One issue that someone obliquely mentioned in the various
replies that I feel requires greater emphasis, is that the
SignaLink USB box is, first and foremost, a sound card
and as such requires a great deal more current than a typical
USB device and should be plugged into a *powered* USB
hub. Granted, the power supplies for various powered USB
hubs are likely to be noisy (from the perspective of us hams,
anyway), and may need further treatment (chokes, bypass
capacitors, etc.). But if your SignaLink USB is plugged directly
into your laptop or desktop, know that it's drawing more current
than the USB (3.0) spec allows, and that may be a significant
contributor to the noise problems being reported in this thread.

Re: [Elecraft] Synchronized and stable GPS phase lock for KX3, K3 and XV transverters

2014-08-21 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
The newer Trimble Thunderbolt requires +24VDC, but some of the
older units on E-Bay, etc. may require +5VDC, +12VDC and -12VDC,
which can be obtained from a simple/inexpensive power supply.
(I used a Meanwell NET-35B). It outputs a 10MHz sine wave (which
plugs into the K3EXREF) as well as 1pps logic signal. Trimble also
makes/made an active antenna, which I also found on E-Bay, which
is a small square about 2 in/5 cm square and has an internal preamp
powered by +5V supplied on the Thunderbolt's antenna jack. I've
been running one for about a year now, and it maintains the 10MHz
to within about 30 parts per trillion, depending on how many satellites
are regularly visible - I usually see 8 or 9 in south Florida and 5-6
in the mountains of western North Carolina.

Re: [Elecraft] KTCXO3-1 TCXO 1 PPM

2014-09-12 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
Is it actually that easy to install?

Yes, it is. Just remember, you really do want to use a
static mat and wrist strap whenever you open up your K3 to
work on something internal to it.

I ran with the KTCXO3-1 from the time I built my K3 two years ago,
but then added the K3EXREF and a Trimble Thunderbolt this spring.
However, should there be a problem either of the latter, I know I can
quickly and easily revert to the KTCXO3-1 as needed. It's a heady
experience to know that when I set the frequency on the K3, it's
accurate to the last Hertz - a far cry from the 75A-3 I used as a Novice.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 External Frequency Reference Questions

2014-09-18 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
I installed a K3EXREF and set up a Trimble Thunderbolt a few months
ago, and I've been very happy.

The K3EXREF was very easy to install - just remember that it's a very
good idea to use a static mat and wrist strap whenever you dive into
the inside of a K3. The instructions were quite clear, and since I'd built
my K3 from the kit, it was an easy procedure.

I don't have any experience with rubidium disciplined oscillators, but
I would suggest you take some time to read through the Time-Nuts
mailing list; the archive is at

time-nuts Info Page

time-nuts Info Page
time-nuts -- Discussion of precise time and frequency measurement About
time-nuts
View on www.febo.com Preview by Yahoo

I was able to get a lot of good information there, and although I didn't
subscribe
and therefore don't know about any recent discussions, there is a treasure trove
of details about the use of various disciplined oscillators, including
rubidiums.

In addition, I know that Down East Microwave has, among a lot of other things,
a distribution box for 10MHz signal sources so that you can feed the K3 from
one port and feed the LO for a transverter off of another, and they also have LO
modules that incorporate PLL/VCOs that can sync to external 10MHz references.

And, yes, it's a heady feeling to know that, at least on HF, your K3 displays
your frequency right down to the nearest Hz. There is a write-up in the K3EXREF
documentation that explains that it's a real good idea to jot down the frequency
of the master oscillator so that if your external reference fails, you can tell
the K3
what you want it to set itself to, so that it doesn't jump to some arbitrary
frequency.

Re: [Elecraft] A new Elecraft product?

2014-10-16 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
I've been running with a Trimble Thunderbolt GPSDO and the Elecraft TCXO for
over a year now. I'm in a position to keep the Trimble powered up continuously,
but I can certainly understand the angst of those who can't. It's a trade-off.
I also
keep an old laptop running, and have Lady Heather running on it to keep an eye
on things. Do I really *need* that level of precision? Probably not, for my
current
operational needs (ordinary/casual HF operations, no VHF/UHF transverters,
etc.).
Bear in mind that the GPS receiver decodes the signals from the various
satellites
that can be seen at any given time, and then generates an error signal to its
internal TCXO running at 10MHz, which then spits out both a 10MHz signal, which
we typically feed to the K3EXREF, and a 1 pulse per second square wave (which
I'd love to feed to a wall clock). The issue is the 100 second warm-up time for
the
Trimble's TCXO, not the GPS receiver, although the latter usually needs, like
any
other GPS unit, a few moments to listen for, and synchronize, to satellite
signals.

There are a couple of system design issues inherent in this, however. First, the
Trimble requires a triple-voltage power supply: +5V, +12V, and -12V. I'm using a
cheap commodity power supply that is in itself powered from AC mains
(117V/60Hz).
So, if I lose AC mains, I lose the Trimble, and have to hope that the K3 and
its TCXO
will stay accurate enough while I'm operating it off of a battery. For those
purposes,
a few Hz isn't going to get me kicked out of an amateur net, but if I were a
MARS
member (which I'm not), it might be dicey - I'd have to do an analysis.

The third issue, which has not been touched on AFAICT, is that the Trimble (and
probably its competition) really likes to have an external antenna. In my case,
I was
lucky to find the actual Trimble antenna (which includes a preamp), and it's
served
me well at both of my QTHs (So. Fla. and western NC), which is a square puck
about 2 inches/5 cm on a side with a magnetic base and 25 feet of RG-174/U coax.
It works, and it was cheap on E-Bay, so I'm happy so far.

So, a potential add-on product for the K3 could involve one of the newer
single-board
GPSDOs (e.g., Sematron GPS-1000 or one of its competitors), feeding the K3EXREF
board internally and using the K3EXREF's input port on the back panel of the K3
for its antenna port. However, I haven't even priced one of these units, never
mind
purchased and evaluated it, much less actually attempted to install it in my
rig. So,
far, it's just an idea or springboard for further discussion. Brian makes an
excellent
point about the overall temperature requirements, as well as the behavior of
the K3
running with its TCXO synchronized to a potentially unsuitable reference
signal. These
can be tricky design issues, and I'm sure Wayne and Eric have enough other
things on
their list to tackle at this point, without a digression into this quagmire.

Just my 20 millidollars' worth,

2014-12-12 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
I realize that this topic has been beaten to death, but I wouldlike to point
out one factoid. Down here in Florida - I'm down inthe southeastern part, and
AK4EH is way up in the Panhandle -there have been a number of instances in
which homeownerswere unpleasantly surprised to discover that their properties
werebeing offered for rent (or, even, sale!) by unknown/unauthorized third
parties.
There's been a huge upheaval in the real estate market here, generallyspeaking,
and a lot of people have been buying properties for cashbecause they don't want
to endure the hassles of getting a mortgage.Problem is, they're not performing
what lawyers (and business owners)call due diligence, and end up at closing
to discover that they'rehanding money over to someone who doesn't own the
property. Oops.Same sort of thing is happening with rentals - folks put down a
deposit, and start to move in, only to be faced by the local constabulary witha
drawn firearm, at which point they realize that that great deal they goton the
Internet was totally bogus.
So, yes, there is always room for suspicion, sadly enough, and for thereasons
that others have voiced in this thread, as well as other reasonsthat may not
have come to light yet.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and HRD: MAC using VMWare + HRD, no waterfall display

2015-03-30 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
I'm not familiar with VMWare, but under Parallels, youhave to make sure that
the various devices, e.g., theserial lines and/or audio codecs, that you need
for HRDhave been assigned to Parallels (and Windows) so thatWindows can legally
access them. It sounds like you've gotthat much at least partially configured.
I'm assuming you have HRD 6.2.9.354 (which I have) or later.
Does the HRD Rig Control come up properly, and does itfollow your VFO when
you turn the main knob on your K3?
On DM780, go into Program Options - Soundcard anddouble-check that it's
looking at the audio device you thinkit should be looking at. (I use a
SignaLink USB, so it showsup as USB Audio Codec; YMMV, and yes, I know
better, but...).
Also under Program Options, you might want to investigateSoundcard
Calibration. I'm not convinced that that alonewould fix your problem, but it
might give you a better idea asto which tree to bark up next.
On the main DM780 window, click on Soundcard, which shouldbring up a couple
of vertically oriented bar graphs - see ifthe receive one is behaving
appropriately; you may need toadjust an input level on your Tascam or other
device if it'sin Overload or barely bumping the thermometer. BTW, thereare
some helpful tips in the info area in the lower right-handcorner of the
Soundcard window.
You might also need to go into the OS X settings to double-checkthat it isn't
(also) trying to grab the Tascam and/or the K3's serial line, even if VMWare and
Windows think they own them.
I haven't looked at the HRD forum lately, but you might take a lookover there
just in case someone with this particular configurationhas encountered this
problem before.

There are no documented changes for the K3, therefore

We're talking about extreme precision here, but in somecases, it might be
needed for MARS. I am not a member of MARS, soI am not privy to their current
frequency tolerance requirements.But, at 1PPM, we're talking 10Hz at 10MHz.

I'm running a Trimble Thunderbolt GPSDO, and according to LadyHeather, I see a
1 tau accuracy of 10 to the minus 13. Is thatextreme? Perhaps, for normal
amateur use, but I think that it wouldprovide a decent "safety" margin for a
MARS operator who needsto meet a certain frequency tolerance on a repeatable
basis withno notice - i.e. instantly QSY to another frequency as needed,
withoutworrying about how long it's been since the last formal calibration.

(And, to be even more inane, the correct abbreviation is "MHz." -capital M for
Mega, capital H/lower case Z for Hertz, since it's aunit named for a person,
and is therefore capitalized. Lower caseM is for milli, which in this case
might describe how far off thedesired frequency a signal might be if it were
sync'ed to an externalsource with the degree of accuracy under discussion

Re: [Elecraft] Can not connect KIO3B USB with my MacMini

2017-02-25 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
Open up a terminal window and type:
ls -l /dev/tty.usb*
You should see something like this: (the serial number will differ)
crw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel   19,   0 Feb 25 13:13 /dev/tty.usbserial-A567JW3P

If you're seeing that, then you should then be able tobring up the K3 Utility
and "talk" to the K3. I just installedmy KIO3B about a month ago, and I'm
running MacOS Sierra 10.12.3on a early 2015 13" Retina MacBook Pro. Under my
"System Report",I see my USB disk (used for Time Machine) and the built-in
BluetoothController plugged into the "USB 3.0 Bus", and then below that, Isee a
"General Purpose USB Hub" as the next item plugged into the 3.0bus, and
attached to the GP bus, I have a USB Audio CODEC and anFT232R USB UART.
The CODEC is a TI device and it's reporting that 500mA is availableto it, and
it's requiring 0mA. The FTDI FT232R UART is likewisereporting 500mA available
to it, and it's drawing 90mA. Since the"hub" is inside the KIO3B and being
powered by it, it should notbe causing the USB power complaint you're getting
on the Mini. BUT,since the Mini is an older device, it is probably USB2, not
USB3,and can't source as much current, etc., and its circuitry *may* besomewhat
intolerant of sudden changes. (I've had problems with blowingexternally powered
USB2 hubs, apparently caused by hot un/plugging,resulting in MacOS reporting
devices seen that Parallels and Windowswould/could not talk to. I've now
switched to the KIO3B and I'm notgoing to do any hot un/plugging, just to be on
the safe side.)
In fact, you might want to see if you can troubleshoot your problemby shutting
everything down and powering it all down, configuring yourcabling, and then
powering it all back up and booting it up. I knowit sounds like a nuisance, but
it may give you a valuable indication.

Subject: [Elecraft] Can not connect KIO3B USB with my MacMini

I am unable to connect the USB on my K3, modified with a KIO3B set of boards,
to my MacMini, running OS10.9.5. I am not able to connect it to my MacbookPro
running Sierra, 10.12.3, either. My Macs simply do not see the USB port. If I
look at the “About This Mac” report on the Macs, I see that a “General Purpose
USB Hub” is connected when the USB cable from the K3 to the Apple products is
connected. I have made sure I have the latest drivers. I have tried different
USB cables. I have Googled and can not find an explanation or a solution. I
have done several system resets. Occasionally when I plug the USB cable into
the Mini, but not the Pro, I get a message “USB Devices disabled - please
disconnect the device drawing too much power” - doing that seems to do nothing.
But I understand the KIO3B draws only 90ma and the Mini puts out 500ma.

Elecraft has told me that they have users who have Macs and KIO3B working.

Has anyone have a suggestion what I should do to fix this? The KIO3B boards
were installed by Elecraft so I assume it left the factory working, although I
have not ruled out a short or defect in the board that may have occurred
.

I have not tried the K3/board with a Windows computer but the same thing
happens when I try to find the ports on Windows10 in Bootcamp.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: [Elecraft] Multiple rig control and logging using a single Macbook Pro

2016-11-24 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
I'm running a mid-2015 MacBook Pro, but have just one K3 and one P3.However, I
do have a powered USB hub to which I've attached an externalsound card (Asus
Xonar U5) and three serial lines. The one cute thing aboutthose serial lines
(which use the "real" FTDI FT232R devices) is that theyeach display a unique
serial number, which can be viewed under the USBDevice Tree page under System
Information which you dive into from the"About This Mac" GUI by going to
"System Report". I've found that to bevery useful for troubleshooting, because
I don't have to sort out device namesin "/dev", etc. (The 3 serial lines are
for the K3, a Trimble ThunderboltGPSDO, and a Kantronics KPC3+, all of which
run at different speeds).
I typically run WSJT-X under MacOS (Sierra, 10.12.1) using the K3's serial
lineand the Xonar, but I can also run RUMlog and Fldigi. But, occasionally,
I'll bootWindows 10 (under Parallels 12.1.1) to run HRD, Lady Heather, Winlink,
Outpostand/or EZNEC+. I usually maintain the K3/P3 firmware using the usual
utilitiesunder MacOS, but I can also do them under Windows if need be. Note
that theP3 and the K3 utilities *do* allow you to select (under "Port") which
serial lineyou wish to use. I don't know anything about MacloggerDX.
As I mentioned above, I am using an externally powered USB2 hub becauseI need
to power the Xonar. I had a fair number of problems stabilizing
thisconfiguration under Windows (7, then 10) because the GPSDO runs at 4800
baudand Windows insisted it was a USB mouse. I alleviated it by rebooting
Windows, sometimes 2 or 3 times in a row. Although the MacBook Pro is USB3 and
the USB3spec stipulates that a USB3 port must supply more than enough current
to supportthe U3 (I forget the exact numbers off the top of my head), it still
didn't solve theproblem of multiple serial lines, coupled with the fact that
the backup drive isattached directly to the (only) other USB port. One trick is
to mark the cables carefullyand keep them in the same physical USB hub slots.
Another is to avoid hot plugging, which despite manufacturers' propaganda WILL
blow hubs; I keep a spare handy.
HTH, and 73 for a Happy Thanksgiving,

You may want to consider posting a message in the WSJT Yahoo! Groupbecause
there have been a number of issues with WSJT-X 1.8-rc1 andthe Hamlib library
which the development group has been plowing through.I was able to get a
special build to test, which avoids the crash that I encounteredwhen first

problems, so I suspect they'd like to swat your bug while they're at it.
I hadn't noticed that particular problem with my station, but I'll try to take
a look for it,perhaps later this afternoon. That's not to say that perhaps
there's a parameteron your rig (or a setting in your WSJT-X Configuration) that
needs to be changed, however.

FWIW, I and many others have been using the posted compiled version of
WSJT-X 1.8-rc1 from the official WSJT-X website with a K3, and without
problems. I'm not using a lot of "bells and whistles" -- I'm using a
vintage K3 with an outboard USB to serial converter from computer to
rig, a Tascam US100 USB audio interface for the computer, and VOX with
the K3 in DATA A mode. I'm doing almost no rig control -- all the USB to
serial interface is doing is read and control frequency.  On the
tab of   select the K3 under Rig, set the serial port that the
computer has assigned to your USB to serial converter, set PTT method to
VOX, set Mode to None, and set Split Operation to None.

The Tascam US100 is simply a very good vintage USB to analog stereo
audio I/O designed for home semi-pro recording studios. There's lots of
comparable stuff that works. It ONLY handles audio, no control functions.

>>> If you know of any specific networks that are planning to activate for this

I'm at my summer home in the mountains of western North Carolina, near
Hendersonville, and we're expecting 99.9% totality at this QTH.
From the reports in the local news media, a huge influx of visitors is
expected, which will basically saturatethe region, including (especially) the
Great Smoky Mountains National Park (which spans parts of bothNC and TN), as
well as the lower part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Local EM officials are very
concernedabout response times for emergency response units because the roads in
that area are narrow (very fewof which are 4 lane), and very winding, with many
switchbacks, blind corners, and steep drop-offs.
Buncombe County ARES (greater Asheville) has been enlisted to provide
additional communications toaugment normal first response communications
facilities.
Other counties have not, as yet, to my (admittedly limited) knowledge, formally
called up local ARES groups.
I'm reasonably certain, based on personal experience with holiday traffic, that
Interstate 40 in western NC,and Interstate 26 in western NC and upstate SC (and
probably all the way down to Charleston) will bevery, very crowded/jammed. Both
of them are mostly 4-lane, albeit with some hill-climbing lanes for trucks, but
tend to get very crowded, even on "normal" weekends.
There are several 630m experimental stations in the immediate vicinity who are
planning WSPRtransmissions throughout the event, and reception reports are
always appreciated.
Luckily, it's a short walk (~1/4 mile) for my XYL and I to the local community
park from which we can observe.

I am not sure what you're planning to do with "Serial" but when I'm using my
K3/KIO3B withWSJT-X, I have the program configured for CAT Control on
/dev/cu.usbserial-A5x at aBaud rate of 38400, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit,
Handshake set to 'None', and PTT Method of RTS(set to the same
/dev/cu.usbserial device), Mode Data/Pkt, Split 'Rig', and a 1 second Poll
Interval.CONFIG:KIO3B is set to 'nor'.
Permissions for the port device file are set to 666 and owner/group is
root/wheel.
You might also want to double-check About My Mac -> System Report -> Hardware
-> USBto see if the K3 is showing up - mine is a 'General Purpose USB Hub' with
a TI vendor IDwhich has a USB Audio Codec (Burr-Brown) and an FT232R USB UART
whose serial numbermatches the device special file that WSJT-X is talking to.
Also, go to System Preferences -> Network and make sure that that port is not
configured.(It most likely is not, but Murphy does very strange things at
times!)
It wouldn't surprise me if Serial might have a permission problem/setting
that's fouling you up,but that's just a SWAG on my part. I'm running Lady
Heather through another USB line to myGPSDO without any fiddling on the macOS
side, but you never know.

The main web site's position reporting may be outdated because, I think, that
they're relaying their position via satellite (Iridium, perhaps?) whichcan get
pretty expensive. Given the length of the journey, it's probablynot worthwhile
providing hour-by-hour position updates. They'll get therewhen they get there,

Re: [Elecraft] FT8 on PX3? Logging FT8 contacts on a Mac?

2018-01-12 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
The macOS version of WSJT-X logs contacts in the same way as the Windows and
Linux versions.
I assume the version of macOS you are running is reasonably up to date,
preferably Sierra orHigh Sierra, and that you installed WSJT-X as a user.
If you are having problems logging, check WSJT-X ->  Preferences to make sure
you have things setup the way you want/need.
If you want to review recent QSOs, then you can go to WSTJX -> File -> Open log
directorywhich will bring up a Finder window for the directory where all of the
log files reside, which istypically /Users/yourusername/Library/Application
Support/WSJT-X. Simply click on "wsjtx.log" andit will bring up the log file
for you to inspect/search.
If you are looking to automatically log your WSJT-X QSOs directly into your
logging program, youshould consult your logging program's documentation. I use
RUMlog, published by Tom, DL2RUM,and there are a couple of settings within it
that allow the two programs to communicate via UDPpackets within your system,
and the integration is wonderful - I leave RUMlog running in the background, and
operate primarily in the main WSJT-X window (while watching the waterfall on
its window, primarilyto pick a clear transmit frequency), and when I actually
make a QSO, and WSJT-X prompts me tolog it (because I have set my WSJT-X
Preferences to do so), and I click on the "Log It" box, it sendsthe information
to RUMlog, which then logs it as if I'd entered it myself. The only thing I
have to dofrom there, manually, on RUMlog is to ship the QSO up to LoTW if I so
choose.
Support for WSJT-X is available on the Yahoo! Group as documented in the Help
files, and theyare very responsive.
Apologies if the formatting of my message looks weird on the mailing list -
it's a Yahoo! problem, which tends to mangle line endings and paragraphing.

Re: [Elecraft] Mac Clock Question

2018-02-20 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
I run my iMac 24x7, and do have it configured to use the ntp.org pool servers,
and it appearsto do the trick for the various WSJT-X modes that I use on HF.
However, even when I doreboot occasionally, any transient loss of sync to the
NTP servers doesn't seriously affectme when I use WSJT-X. OTOH, since I spend a
lot more time listening than transmitting, while searching for "new ones", NTP
has plenty of time to sync back up :-)
I suppose if you want to really go overboard, you could get yourself a GPSDO
and theninstall gpsd (GPSd — Put your GPS on the net!) and NTPsec (Welcome to
NTPsec)and then you'd not only be good-to-go for the WSJT-X modes, but you
could then serveup a reference for the rest of us. Both of those can, AFAICT,
be built for Windows,Linux and macOS, assuming you have the software
development tools (compiler, linker, libraries, etc.) installed.
BTW, NTPsec is a new/rewritten implementation of NTP that is far more secure
and robust, and does not need gpsd or a GPSDO to use. If you're concerned that
your currentOS/computing environment might not be behaving as well as you'd
like with respect to NTP,it might be worthwhile to take a look at NTPsec.

Re: [Elecraft] Silent power supply for a K3s

2019-06-09 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
I've been running an Astron RS-35A for several years now, fortunately
withoutany buzzing. However, I use it to feed a WMR PG40S, which keeps a large
(105Ah)AGM SLA battery charged, and that feeds a RigRunner. I adjusted the
RS-35A to14.1 V on the RigRunner (on receive), and it dips to 13.5 or so on
transmitwhen running the K3 at 100W out.
As others have mentioned, it is a case of using large wire - #10 or #8 - in the
shortestlengths possible, and the heavier-rated APPs throughout.
There are numerous articles out on the web and in the archives of this mailing
list aboutamendments to Astron power supplies and depending on the age of
yours, you may needto investigate what the root cause of the buzzing is, be it
simply loose fastening hardwareor perhaps a filter capacitor that's well past
its prime.

Re: [Elecraft] Mobile high power

2019-05-06 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
There are implications for fixed-location operators as well. I can only run
about 175W into my (very) shortinverted-L on 630m - above that, I trip the car
alarm on my upscale European-made SUV parked in the driveway.I'm in a fairly
crowded neighborhood - house lots are on the order of 1/5th of an acre - with a
condo complexnext door to me, which generates a lot of slow speed traffic, so
it's quite likely that an RF-susceptible vehiclecould have an interesting
experience if I should happen to key up on JT9 while it's rolling by the
house.(My EIRP is about 1.25W, 6dB below the legal limit).

Re: [Elecraft] WSJT-X using KX3 + MacBook Air

2020-01-12 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
Can you fill us in on exactly what versions of macOS and WSJT-X youare trying
to use?
Also, did you pay attention to the release notes for WSJT-X and use the correct
values in /etc/sysctl.conf?(I was bitten - badly - by that myself!). I'm still
on Mojave (10.14.6), so if you're on Catalina, YMMV.
Go into (black Apple icon) -> About This Mac -> System Report -> USBand make
sure that it sees/enumerates the General Purpose USB Hub, the USB Audio
CODEC,and the FT232R USB UART that are connected to your KX3. I'm using a K3
withthe updated KIO3B, etc. so I don't specifically know if the KX3 is
configured in exactlythe same manner, but I would think that it would be
somewhat similar overall; I donot need any other connections, such as the mic
input jacks. Also, make sure tonote what the serial number of the FT232R is, as
there is a device special file,e.g. /dev/tty.usbserial-A1234567, that is
created for that particular device, and thatis what you should be specifying to
WSJT-X->Preferences->Radio for your rig controls.The WSJT-X->Preferences->Audio
should, of course, be set to "USB CODEC" BUTWSJT-X may/should initially ask to
allow connection to the mic input and you shouldanswer "YES". (Yeah, that was
kind of counter-intuitive to me, too...)
There had been a lot of discussion about this in the WSJT-X Yahoo! Group but
they just (finally)shifted over to a Groups.io group and I suspect/fear that
much of this sort of informationhas been (temporarily?) lost.

The power system for my K3/P3 consists of a large SLA AGM battery that is

adjusted to 14.2V to accommodatethe drop through the wiring, the PGS-40 and the

Subject: [Elecraft] K4 Power Supply Recommendation

Hello everyone!

Like most here I am waiting for my K4.  Currently I am running the Power Werx
SS30DV from the Elecraft site for my KX3 and Kxpa100.  I was planning on buying
another for the K4 but thought I would ask opinions first.  I am assembling my
first real HF station and going the cry once route.  I would rather pay a bit
more up front and get something solid rather than saving a few bucks now only
to upgrade later.

Given what I intend to spend on the K4, I don’t want to skimp on its PS if
spending a bit more will improve performance.  My budget is let’s say $500 and
my question is would buying a bigger switching or linear PS for the K4 make
sense?  My KX3 PS has caused me no issues and if that is the way to go I am
groovy.

Thanks!
John

Re: [Elecraft] Mac vs K3s - Again

2021-01-23 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
Given that you are running generally older hardware and system software, you
probably don'tneed to worry about how "out of date" your FTDI driver might be.
(I'm running a 2017 iMac withBig Sur installed and working beautifully). I
assume that your USB hardware really is FTDI andnot one of the infamous clones
that have been discussed to death here and in other forums. If it really is
FTDI, then D2XX Drivers - FTDI lists version 1.4.22 as having been released
on21 January 2021 (!) and is suitable for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or later, which
should be OK for you.

Re: [Elecraft] K-Line / ZeroFive Antennas

2021-06-28 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
 Hi, Jim -
I don't have a KAT500, but I do have an upgraded K3 (near-K3s) with the
internal tuner that I run barefoot to a ZeroFive 30m quarter-wave vertical with
a wire attached to its tip, running about 40 feet to the north to the top of an
avocado tree. My radial field is putrid - just a couple of quarter-wave wires
for each band, because our house lot in south Florida is 1/5 acre, and I have
7.5 kV 3-phase power lines running down two sides of the property. However, it
(and its predecessor, a Zero-Five 20m quarter-wave vertical) has held up very
well in the salt air, and performed beautifully. In fact, I also have a large
coil that allows me to tune it on 630m. When using it without the 630m coil,
the internal tuner matches up beautifully on all bands from 80m through 10m.
I've always been very impressed by the construction of these antennas -
beautiful machine work, precise fittings, and very durable, so I highly
recommend them from that perspective.
I augmented my radial field with three 8 foot ground rods pounded into the sand
angled downward away from the base, plus I ran some #000to the ground screen
under the swimming pool. Typical ground resistance at resonance is about 25
Ohms.
I'm not subject to HOA/CC restrictions, and our city does allow amateur radio
antennas to a certain extent (60 ft max for the first tower, oneadditional
tower at 40ft), but considering we're right on the Atlantic coast, that's
pretty understandable.
(And, Florida Power & Light is in the process of moving all of the HV and
household feeders underground, so really, at this writing, I have 3-phaseHV
lines along only one side of the property, and those might have been
de-energized at this point as well; I will perform another round ofnoise
measurements when we return in November, but the noise was about S9 this winter
before they started working on the lines).

considering the ZeroFive 24 foot, 40-6 meter flagpole antenna. If you’ve run
one of these antennas and have matched it via a KAT500, how well did it work?
Did you have the KAT500 on your desk, or remote at the antenna base? These

that seems to indicate that these very expensive verticals might be a viable
solution.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility vs macOS Monterey?

2022-01-15 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
Does the USB port show up when you go to 'About This Mac' and then to 'System
Report' and then to 'Hardware:USB' ?
Assuming you are using a quality USB cable (from either Elecraft or Sabrent)
that uses the FTDI chip set, and not someother cable that uses a Prolific chip
set. (I have several USB devices on my Mac, and I keep careful track of which
iswhich by tracking their serial numbers as denoted by the /dev filenames in
addition to what 'About This Mac' displays,as I've run into problems in the
past, particularly when using Windows under Parallels, given how picky Windows
isabout device ports and ordering).
Does the port show up under another program, such as WSJT-X or JTDX? Were
either of those programs (or othersthat may be trying to use the particular USB
port) still running when you invoked the K3 Utility? I don't control my K3using
RUMlog (which I do use for logging), but it does have some rig control
capabilities, for example. I'm not familiarwith the other Mac logging programs
out there, so I can't comment on what effect they might have in your situation.

Re: [Elecraft] Mac Logging Software

2022-06-12 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
I've been using RUMlogNG for years, and it's worked beautifully for me, and
it's well-maintained. It integrateswith LoTW beautifully, as well as other
databases. There are numerous rig control features available that Idon't
personally use, since I tend to use WSJT-X or JTDX, and it does cooperate with
those two programs sothat when you finish a QSO, the data is sent from them to
RUMlogNG and is plopped into my log automatically. For example, it will track
the frequency data from a K3 or K4D, and some ops use it to directly key it on
CW.For manual (i.e., non-digital) modes, QSO entry is simple, straightforward
and intuitive.

It's available directly from the AppStore or you can go to DL2RUM's website
directly, and is free.

I also use it for contest logging - there is a pull-down menu that sets up a
separate logging interface configuredfor the specific contest you're working,
to present real-time scores, missing multipliers, etc.

The formatting of this e-mail may've been messed up by Yahoo, and should not
reflect on the value of RUMlogNG :-)

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 MacOS M1 Mini

2022-09-24 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
About a month ago, I upgraded from an old (2015?) Intel i5-based MBP to the
new M2 MBP, and was able to migrate everything over to it seamlessly by having
the M2 import all of my bits from the TimeMachine backup. I've been using
RUMlogNG for years, and it works nicely with both WSJT-X and JTDX
*simultaneously*, with WSJT-X driving the upgraded K3 (near-K3s) operating with
the KXV3B on 630m and JTDX operating the K4D on the HF bands. I do not have
RUMlogNG do any rig control for me, however.
I have 24MB of memory in this MBP, but I was operating with 16MB on the old MBP
just fine. I had a 250GB SSD on the old MBP, but splurged for 1TB on the M2.
However, I think you should be able to get by with 16/250 on an Apple Silicon
based machine unless you're planning to watch a movie or edit video while
you're working the bands :-) One trick that I pull is to have a separate
partition on a large USB drive (which is primarily used for TimeMachine) to
keep less-needed files, as well as the log files generated by WSJT-X and JTDX.
I simply created a symbolic link in the files for those two apps to point to
the right places on the USB drive.
Only fly in the ointment I've encountered is that I run Parallels and it
upgraded to the latest version and then installed Windows 11 ARM for me. I
haven't played with it yet, so I don't know how much it will bog down the
system. *BUT*, be forewarned that Ham Radio DeLuxe is Intel-only and flatly
told me in their support forum that they do NOT intend to make an ARM64 version
for Windows 11. I only use HRD as a backup log program to review my awards
standing (e.g., DXCC, WPX, etc.), and now do so on my Intel-based iMac, but I
plan to retire it eventually. I've never used it for rig control, etc.
I also had a minor problem porting 'flaa' to the new system, and had to forage
for an as-yet unreleased version and compile it myself. But, once I did, it
worked beautifully. Also, I was able to use the latest versions of
nanovna-saverwith my nanoVNA-F, by doing a 'chmod +x' one time to make it
executable, but I do have to invoke it from a command line in Terminal, and it
takes a while to start up, even though I have the latest Python version
installed.
I have not updated to Ventura yet, either - simply too busy doing other/fun
stuff - but I'll be happy to assist as best I can.

Has anyone used a Mac Mini with a K3 or K3s?  How much RAM and how big an SSD?
I am especially interested in which logging program you use.  I have been
looking at RumLogNG but am not set on it.  How well has it been working?

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Remote Lives and Breathes!

As a retired software QC engineer (UNIX OS and layered products), I'm
curiousas to what kind of testing would be needed at a mountain QTH versus a
valley QTH. :-)
In all seriousness, congratulations - I can easily imagine that it's been a LOT
of work, and I'm sure all of us are sincerely grateful: THANK YOU !!
Very 73 for a healthy and happy holiday season,

I have K4 radios at a mountain QTH and a valley QTH and either one can
connect to and use the other.

Re: [Elecraft] Mysterious K3 Symptoms - RFI?

2024-03-13 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
Although I don't have an amp, and ran my K3 barefoot, and run my K4D barefoot
as well, I do have a 100 foot CAT5E cable running into the shack from the other
end of the house, through the attic (there being no basement here in south
Florida!). Initially, I was seeing a fair amount of noise from it, and was able
to quench it by winding a couple of turns around a small clamp-on choke.
That doesn't seem to affect the network performance, so I can reliably run it
at 400MBit/second, and it seems to clean up whatever other noise it's picking
up from nearby homes (most are on small lots of about 1/5 acre) and the
condominium complex next door. I still have some strange noise from other
sources coming in from the antenna, and the HVAC's air handler is very noisy,
particularly on 30m through 15m, but I know it's not the twisted-pair Ethernet
line. My CAT5E cable plugs into a small AC-powered router, and feeds my Mac,
the K4D, as well as a laptop occasionally.

One culprit I can think of is a 100-foot Ethernet cable between my
station and my FIOS router.  I have bought a shielded replacement but
have not yet installed it.  After reading some of the recent commentary
about so-called "shielded" cables, I'm wondering if this is worth doing.

Any suggestions, either K-3-specific or more general, would be much
appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] Mysterious K3 Symptoms - RFI?

2024-03-13 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
Unfortunately, with the high population density in my immediate neighborhood,
especially with 150+ condominium apartments right next door, I have a difficult
time getting a reliable wi-fi connection to my home network. I'm about 900 feet
(240m) west of the Intracoastal Waterway, and have 2, 3, 5 and 7 floor condo
buildings between me and the ICW. To the north, west and south, I have
single-family homes. Along the south (i.e., rear) side of our house lot, I have
7.5kV 3-phase power lines overhead, which feed the homes on the block south of
us; we're fed by underground feeders installed 2 years ago. To make matters
more interesting, we have a steel "ridgepole" running the length of the house,
atop the actual conventional wooden ridgepole, which supports the curved
concrete tiles at the top of the roof. I suspect that noise is coupling from it
onto my TWP Ethernet line as well. I used the simple/cheap MFJ clamp-on chokes
at both the shack end and the end in the den where it's plugged into the ISP's
modem/router. Basically, I'm doing the best I can with what I've got.

I recommend replacing Ethernet cables with wifi when possible, both for noise
