[lace] Christmas Card Exchange.
Can I just point out it , i Janet ,Lin has been doing the Bookmark exchange , My self and Sallie did the Christmas Card Exchange , Last year was the It was Sallie who was ill not me and Lin did not finish of the Christmas Card exchange , I did it all on my own. For the sake of an email this has caused the upset and dividing the group which is not nice. Janet From: Laura De BruynSubject: [lace] Spirit of Christmas I don't post often, but I do read most and take part in as many exchanges as possible. It saddens me to see all this "taking sides" There are always 3 sides to every story - version 1, version 2 and the truth somewhere in between! Firing accusations at each other only increases the hurt on both sides. If I recall correctly, Janet and Lin have been handling the Christmas exchange for a number of years, and it was due to Janet's ill health that Lin "finished the job" last year. Maybe she assumed (as I had) that Janet was still ill. Mistakes are made by all of us...maybe Lin should have conferred via private email before getting the ball rolling, maybe Jenny should have been consulted in relation to use of her site, which may have lead to Janet being contacted.hindsight is a wonderful thing! Maybe the road forward is to scrap the work done so far, Lin, Janet and Jenny confer privately and decide if they are big enough to forgive and forget. If so, start again. If not, invite someone else to take on the mammoth task of organising Christmas cards to wing their way across the world in the spirit of friendship and love. Can we please accept this, act like grown ups and not spoilt school children and remember what Christmas is all about. Let's just get on with making lace! [lace] Christmas card exchange 2017
Thank you Liz! I keep hoping that our three very capable volunteers will look at the big picture, bury the hatchet & work as a team for the good of the whole. Many hands make light work & there is plenty of work for all three to organize an exchange of this size. Whatever happened to teamwork ladies!?! In the meantime, all our online speculation is for naught unless & until our volunteers correspond with each other off list. I just can't believe that we have devolved into finger pointing, choosing sides & anticipating a malicious lacemaker around every corner. As if! Taking a cue from the NYSE, I'm taking a "quiet period" to await results. In lace friendship to ALL Arachneans... [lace] Christmas card exchange 2017
REALLY?! All this infighting regarding the exchange makes me feel like I'm listening to a bunch of high schoolers arguing over who gets to be head cheerleader. There is no cheer in it - Christmas or otherwise. In most groups, it's difficult to get anyone to volunteer to do anything and now many here are arguing who will organize an exchange that is supposed to be about sharing our gifts and skills. Does it matter who organizes it that Arachne will splinter and fall apart if one person does it versus another person? Janet would have discovered Lin was starting to organize it when she came back from vacation. It should then have been up to Janet to privately talk to Lin about it - maybe even thanking her for getting things started. I suspect Lin was thinking sending out the invitation this early would help slow lacers and newbies or people with a lot of time constraints around the holidays to get an early start and make their plans. If between Janet and Lin, it was decided Janet would take over, then again, it should have been left up to them to decide and go on from there. It seems to me all this taking sides is ruining the whole intent of the exchange. In my opinion, all this is very immature and petty and should stop immediately. If Janet still wants to do it, she can converse with Lin off list and they can work something out. Frankly, I'm exhausted from the whole thing. Avital is right, this stuff doesn't belong on the list which is supposed to be about making lace, not enemies. Re: [lace] Christmas Card Exchange
I love Brigitte Bellon's christmas lace books, like Allerlei Geklöppelter Christbaum-schmuck, Geklöppelter Weihnachtsschmuck, or Neue Weihnachts- Klöppelmuster. As you might guess, the instructions are in German, but I find the detailed pictures, patterns and a bit of Googling sufficient to work them out! They have some interesting techniques in them. Re: [lace] Christmas card exchange
Another solution is to go to look at past submissions which have been kept for members of Arachne. The leaders of the exchanges have urged participants to identify the original sources (designers), and they have (in recent years) also asked for prickings or instructions to put on the site to accompany each item. I keep preaching to go to our archives. In this case, you can narrow the search by adding the name of Jenny Brandis to Christmas Card Exchange and narrow the search from 400+ entries to 40+ entries. (Jenny - Australian - has worked very hard to bring all the submissions to us in wonderful color, Janet - U.K. and Sallie U.S. have been organizing the exchanges in recent years. This is a happy example of the international nature of Arachne.) Go to: _Http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html_ (http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html) Search: Christmas Card Exchange, Jenny Brandis Unfortunately, our server has never been re-programmed to put the correspondence in date order, but you will find Jenny's memos announcing the new entries (by year) to the site she maintains. Sorry, but there are many things to do after attending a 2-day Needlework Conference in Delaware sponsored by a major U.S. museum. **A member of Arachne found me in the crowded book shop (where else?)!** Drove, total, over 500 miles yesterday, and the same 3 days earlier on the crowded highways that run from Maine to Florida along the Eastern seaboard. It's up to you to do the searching... or maybe our busy Jenny will chime in. Re: [lace] Christmas Card Exchange
Hello Janet and Sallie I intended to join the Christmas Card exchange this year but life has thrown rather a lot of curved balls at me this year. My DH suddenly passed away at the beginning of July and I did not realise what a lot of legal problems I would have to deal with and they are still going on. As if this were not enough, our postal workers have been on strike for 10 weeks now and it does not look as though any settlement will be reached soon. I dont think there will be any Christmas post in South Africa this year. I don;t actually remember if I put my name on the list but if I did I think you had better remove it. I hope that by next Christmas my life will have settled down again. I am so grateful for my lacemaking friends who are helping me to get through this difficult time. [lace] Christmas Card exchange
Hello all I'm having to try and re-send this message because I don't think it got through the first time, but at least I'm finally receiving both Arachne digests again. --- This morning I received a lovely Christmas card from my exchange pal Joepie Hammett in Sussex - thank you Joepie it is absolutely delightful and what a lovely thought to include the coaster for mounting it in - after Christmas it will be in my den so I can admire it everyday - it is a beautiful little owl that Joepie has designed, he has just so much character he really is wonderful thank you very much. Thank you also to both Amber and Avital for getting me back on to Arachne after weeks of absence even from lurkdom - having had a major computer breakdown, a new computer and new to us windows 7 operating system [all courtesy of my husband's son for husbands significant birthday]. But it has been a bit of a nightmare, firstly getting to grips with the new system (still can't find 'undo' button), and secondly finding that all the files from the old computer had been transferred but it was just as if the filing cabinet had been emptied and everything stuffed back in anywhere!!! So a lot of re-organising. Then to upset the apple cart we changed our ISP provider so for those who may wish to know I have a new e.mail address bob.b...@btinternet.com which leads to another question - does anyone know how I go about boosting the signal for wifi usage elsewhere in the house - before the change of ISP provider we had good wifi coverage and I could use my lap top anywhere in the house - since the change we can't use the tablet, kindle or laptop unless in the same room as the BT hub yet they are connected for wifi usage, the signal is just too low. Any suggestions. Many thanks Nicky in Suffolk - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Christmas card exchange - waht it is
The Christmas Card Exchange starts in Sept or Oct when someone says they are willing to coordinate it. They collect emails of people who want to participate, and set up the pairings. The assignments are usually made by the end of October. Each card is to have some handmade lace on or in it, and be mailed by early December. Jenny generously makes space on her website for pictures of the various cards. If you watch your email next Sept or Oct, you can join the exchange for next Christmas. Sometimes Arachne has a bookmark exchange in the spring. You can watch for an announcement of that in a few months if you are interested. [lace] Christmas card exchange
I should have written sooner because I received my card from Alice Howell last week. My card to her is in the mail but my other card to Ayla in New Zealand has to wait until I get to the post office on Friday, closed tomorrow for Thanksgiving. Alice made a very nice piece of lace which probably looks better than will show in any picture because it is 3D. I sent my card scans and pattern to Jenny. Mine are a simple design which I used to do a demo at my guild last Saturday so that is why they were not in the mail immediately they came off the pillow. Happy Thanksgiving to all US members. Hi Lacemakers, I have volunteered to run the Christmas Card Exchange this year so it is time for you to decide if you would like to participate. The exchange is open to new and experienced lacemakers and certainly is an enjoyable experience. I will require names by 7th November and will send out pairings one week later, so you can start making cards now. Please do not put your name forward if you will be unable to finish and post your card prior to 4th December, as it is very disappointing if you do not receive a card after sending one. All replies must be sent my email address f...@tpinstruments.com.au Cards must be sent to your partner by 4th December, so they will receive them before Christmas. Jenny Brandis will again be displaying all cards sent so please remember to take a picture of your finished card and email it to Jenny, along with a few details. Previous Arachne card exchanges can be viewed at the following address http://www.brandis.com.au/Arachne/2009/index.html if you would like to look at them. I will require the following information by 7th November if you would like to participate and pairings will be sent out one week later: Name: Address: Email address: Number of cards you want to send: Do you wish to send overseas or your own country Regards Faye Owers Tasmania f...@tpinstruments.com.au - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. I'm still working on hand-stitched gifts for embroidery friends so didn't join the card exchange for the obvious reason--procrastination. Some of the items were started in August have visited Wales (LGUK summer school), earning frequent flyer miles along the way! Greetings, festive Spiders! The deadline for joining the Christmas Card exchange has come and gone, and I have worked out the pairings of partners. Tomorrow, I will send out emails to each of you who signed up for the exchange. As it happened, an even number of people joined the exchange, so each person will only need to make one card to exchange. If there are any of you who wanted to exchange with two, and are disappointed, email me, and I'll see if I can't match up a few more of you!! So be looking for your emails tomorrow! [lace] Christmas Card Exchange... official launch
Greetings, Lacemakers! The 2009 Arachne Christmas Card Exchange has officially begun! Basic rules: - You will trade a card with another lacemaker. - Your card must have some handmade lace in or on it. It can be any kind of lace. The card can be any kind, handmade or purchased, as long as it has your own handmade lace somewhere. You may design your own piece of lace, or you may use a design by another lacemaker. On your card, identify the designer as well as the lacemaker. - The card *must* be mailed by Dec. 5 so it will arrive well before Christmas, to be enjoyed. - This year, each person is allowed to sign up for one exchange. The person who receives your card will be the person you send a card to. Persons who are willing to do more than one card will be placed on an emergency list to send to participants who did not get their card. Think carefullySign up ONLY if you are willing to make some lace and send the card. It is extremely disappointing to send a card and not receive one back. This seems to happen every year. If you have signed up and have an unforeseen situation arise which prevents you from completing your card, please let me know as soon as you can so that I can arrange a substitute for you! Before you send your card, be sure to scan it and send the file to Jenny Brandis so that she can add it to this year's collection of cards on her website. Also, be sure to include the name of the lace designer if it is not your own design. To see previous years cards, go to www.brandis.com.au/arachne/ When you have sent your card, please email me and let me know. That way, if the card does not arrive, we will know it is lost in the mail And when you receive a card, you should email a thank you to the sender so he/she knows it was received. If interested in participating, send a private email to me at clayblackw...@comcast.net. (Do NOT send to the List.) Please put *Arachne Card Exchange* in the subject line! Send in your name by Oct 15 (but you can start planning and making lace right away). Give your name, address, email, and how many exchanges you wish to do (1, or 1 plus a standby..). Also, please tell me whether you want your exchange to be within your own country or with someone in another country. I realize that my server, the infamous and unreliable Comcast is shamelessly rude about intercepting (and losing) some of my email. Therefore, I will send send each of you a confirmation when I receive your email. If you don't hear from me within two or three days of sending me your message, then you should find someone else on the list who is willing to forward the message for you! Hopefully, someone who is able to get email through to me will volunteer to do this! Contact me if you have any questions. Have fun!! Dear Spiders, I have been in contact with Jenny, Brenda, and Alice, who have all been involved with the project in the past, and with their promises of able guidance, I have volunteered to organize the Card Exchange this year. I have not yet set up my mail system to receive your emails on this, so don't write just yet. I'll send out another email with the subject line that you need to use, as well as the information that you need to provide. This should get out tomorrow... [lace] Christmas card exchange?
I'm not sure, but I think it is time to at least start talking about it What do you all think? I am just thinking about this since I have been visiting my new granddaughter this weekend. She came to us a month early, but is healthy and beautiful! It was a dangerous time for my daughter, but the doctors were wonderful, and she will be just fine! We had to leave her yesterday (much to my displeasure) so that we could get home in time to secure the house for Faye (thankful for the safe travel yesterday, and that the storm has lessened...still sad to leave that little girl!) Spending today keeping an eye on the weather. The night before we left, we were expecting to be coming home to a hurricane right where we live, but it has shifted and now it is just tropical storm conditions that we are dealing with. They expect power to go out to about 30% of us. We usually lose our power in these things because there are so many big old oak trees that have limbs fall on the power lines here. That means our water pump goes out, but we have water in tubs. Experience is a good teacher. So now, I am putting aside my Cinderella bonnet and looking at dainty little edgings (she is too small for newborn dresses yet). Having a little girl to make lace for is going to have me busy for awhile. So... I thought I might bring up the question of the Christmas Card Exchange. It is a wonderful thing to do, but needs advance time to plan and work the lace. So, whoever it is that runs this... I'm ready :) Let's get it started! I had similar thoughts the other day, whilst reading though some old emails (the Arachne FAQ and Handbook postings that I kept) and musing over the various bobbin, ornament, bookmark and card exchanges we have had over the years. At the moment my pillow(s) has a queue forming of things I want to get done, but I agree, it is time to start thinking. Hello from your 2006 Christmas Card website person :) this is the last update before the site is made viewable. Please make sure that if you want your card to be available for viewing that it has been sent or that you let me know it is coming. To date I have heard from 23 lace makers that they have sent their 25 Christmas cards and have emailed their photos or scans of the lace to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to be included in the 2006 Arachne Christmas Card Exchange website. Most people have said where their idea/pattern/inspiration comes from and I have also received scans of the prickings of some of the original designs. Well done ladies, this is what makes Arachne such a wonderful group, our willingness to share our knowledge. The website is at www.brandis.com.au/2006/index.html but will not have the photos available until closer to Christmas. This is so that the far flung members have a chance of receiving their cards before they are visible on the website. In the meantime, the site does have a few tutorials to assist you in sending your photos and scans. Remember to scan or photograph your work before posting it, or asking the recipient to do so. Email the files to me for the website and if you have designed your own lace - please consider including the pricking for inclusion in the site. [lace] Christmas Card Exchange
I would enjoy participating in the Christmas Card Exchange suggested by Bev. I don't think I would be any good at organising it, too butterfly brained for that I belive, but could easily fit in the making of a Christmas card or to. I thoroughly enjoyed the Bookmark Exchange that we had years ago when I was las on this list. Regards Jenny DeAngelis. [lace] Christmas Card Exchange page updates
I promise not to keep posting about this, but I wanted to remind you all that I'm still receiving scans of new and beautiful lace, and as I receive them, they go up for you to see and enjoy. There have been five additions since the original page was unveiled. So please keep checking back from time to time! The date will be changed to reflect the most recent additions. New lace is at the top. There's a link to my email address at the very bottom. http://homepage.mac.com/bejoyce/arachne2005/ I also want to say how much I appreciate all the emails I've received thanking Bev and me for setting up the exchange and the web page. [lace] Christmas Card Exchange Page is Up!
Before I give you the URL, a few quick tidbits: First I'd like to thank Bev for all her work in organizing this exchange. It has been such fun to see all the lace, and for each of us to make a new friend in another part of the world. Thanks, Bev! Second, please, please do send me email with any additions, corrections, changes or comments regarding the web site. My email address is at the bottom of the web page. I would love to have additional information such as the full names and locations of some of the lacemakers and recipients, names of designers of the lace, source of the design, threads used, and anything else that you think might be of interest to others. Third, there is a gift on the page to all of us: Laura Sandison designed a Rosaline Snowball for her card, and she has provided the pricking and instructions. If you click on the link below her card, you will be able to download the material. Thank you, Laura! The images are posted in the order I received them. As I continue to receive scans and photos, I will change the date at the top of the page so you will know whether there have been additions since your last visit. I will now start posting the newest images at the top of the page. As you scroll down, once you recognize a piece of lace, you'll know you've seen all the newest pieces. Important: If you haven't received your card yet, it is very likely that it is delayed in the mail. Just in case your sender posted a photo, you might like to wait to get your card before visiting the site. THANK you EVERYONE!! Bev and Barbara - I know you've been focused on this project for months and it shows!! GREAT job, ladies! And all the lacemakers should be SO proud!! I really can't tell which were made by beginners - isn't that a nice thing!! I was maxed out with other projects this fall and could not consider doing an ornament... but count me in next year!! [lace] Christmas card exchange, Thank you
Yesterday I received a lovely card from Mary Robinson in Nebraska. Thank you. It's a red and gold star inside a bangle which is stuck onto a printed card, positioned over a wreath above filled Christmas stockings. The lace ornament is detachable, so it will added to my growing collection of lacy Christmas ornaments which all come out again each year. I've just scanned both the card and the ornament to send to Barbara as Mary's name wasn't on the list of having sent scans. The card is still intact, I just slipped white paper underneath the lace for the close-up scan. Mary, you say you are a beginner lacemaker, but the lace is well worked; your tension is good. It's not easy using metallic threads for BL, especially the wrapped ones. Your comments about going to your first BL workshop and being able to handle the bobbins before purchasing them reminded me of my early days of lacemaking (mid '70s). As a new student I could have whatever bobbins the teacher could get hold of; sometimes old and often quite mediocre, sometimes very nicely turned new ones, and sometimes plastic. Re: [lace] Christmas Card Exchange web site
Bowing to Bev's request, I will wait to get the go-ahead from her before posting the URL for the Christmas Card Exchange web site. This means that, although it won't be posted before 12/15, it might be significantly later. Bev will let me know when she thinks the time is right. I also want to say that if I offended or embarrassed anyone by posting the list of names of the lacemakers who had sent me scans, I certainly want to apologize. Since the names will be on the web site, along with the lace, in a couple of weeks, it never occurred to me that anyone would object. Sorry! On December 15, I will post the URL for everyone to see the scans of this year's lace and cards. Meanwhile, a few tidbits to whet your appetite: I have received scans of 23 different pieces of lace. I thought it might be a good idea to post the names of the makers of the lace I've received. I tried really hard to keep them organized, and I don't think I lost anyone, but sometimes email goes astray, and mistakes do happen. If you don't see your name below and think you sent me a scan of your lace, please send it again [EMAIL PROTECTED]. I will continue to accept new scans as long as people send them to me. When you receive your card, if the maker's name isn't shown, please feel free to scan the lace and send the scan to me. One more thing--when the page goes up, you'll see that there's a lot of information on some listings, precious little on others. Please feel free to send me any additions and/or corrections. [lace] Christmas Card Exchange
Hello, I sent this to Lace Chat yesterday, and I should have sent it to Lace. My Christmas Card Exchange arrived safely on Saturday. It is a very pretty piece of lace made in the shape of a tapered ornament. Many thanks to Jane Dobinson of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, for this lovely card with the removable ornament which will be on my Christmas tree this year! I wish that I would have thought of doing such an interesting pattern. [lace] Christmas card exchange
Hi everyone Hearing no nays, a few yays, and agreeing that time flies, I hearby undertake to organize a Christmas card exchange. I am going to follow in Brenda's footsteps, and have one person send to another (A send to B, B sends to C etc.). You can then meet two people, your recipient, and your sender. If you want, you can send to more than one. Last year I received a beautiful Torchon lace candle on a card. My recipient got a snowflake that I'd made from Tamara's 2-pair Inventions. The deal is, make a lace Christmas card for your recipient. If you wish to send something else, such as a postcard from your area, that is up to you. The minimum requirement is lace on a card that can be sent at basic letter rate (incl airmail). No one should expect more - or less - and here's the qualifier: * please do not sign up if you don't think you can make a card in time to send it before Christmas! we have had other exchanges in the past, and it is s disappointing to be on the neglected end :( For fun, so that the rest of the list can enjoy, I will be happy to post pictures of the cards/laces if small pictures are e-mailed to me - either from the lacemaker or the recipient. Please credit the designer if you are using a published pattern, or yourself if you are the designer! so - Send e-mail to me with 'Christmas card exchange' in the subject line, let me know if you want to send to more than one person, and please include your mailing address. I'll take names until November 1 but will start assigning well before then. let's say December 5 is the deadline for mailing - does that sound fair? -- bye for now Bev in Sooke BC (on Vancouver Island, west coast of Canada) Cdn. floral bobbins www.woodhavenbobbins.com - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [lace] Christmas Card Exchange and Beautiful Lace
Hi Barbara, I, too, think it will be lovely to see the Exchange gifts. Rather than set up a new page, may I suggest the Arachne Webshots site and set up a collection in there specifically for these photos (as opposed to within each individual's collection). We all have the URL for that site. Just my tuppence worth :) And no I didn't get any lace related gifts - unless I count Tamara's book which came long before the Christmas tree went up. Cheers Jennifer in Brisbane Australia where even this far north of Cooma it has taken a decidedly chilly turn! especially between 4 and 6 am! - Original Message - It started with my plan to scan the lace and put it on a web page so several of my distant lace friends could see it. From that sprang the idea that if others would email me a .jpg image of the lace they received, I could set up a web page for all of us to see and admire all the different gifts we exchanged with each other. - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] Christmas Card Exchange Page is UP!
Thanks to all who responded to my suggestion to send me scans for a page to show the beautiful lace pieces we exchanged with our Christmas Cards. I've put up a page to start it off. Here's the URL: http://homepage.mac.com/bejoyce/arachne/ I would appreciate some feedback. First of all, if you have any additions or corrections to the information listed, please do send it to me [EMAIL PROTECTED]. Second, I've tried to size the pictures so that you are able to see detail on these beautiful pieces. I realize that some people have slower connections, and with all the photos on this page, it may take a while to load. Please let me know if you think the time to download the page is excessive. If I get a few yes responses to this question, I will downsize all the images, making the download faster. I am happy to continually update the page with new scans, so please do send me a scan of the lace you received, if you haven't already done so! My best wishes for a happy, healthy New Year to all.
