Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy not syncing in Dropbox
It is not advisable to have your live file in Dropbox or Google Drive or any of the other cloud based storage systems. What you can do reliably is to place the zipped backup files in the cloud drive and then restore the file as needed on another computer from the cloud storage. Using the live file on a cloud device requires a method to insure that the file has been sync'ed completely before accessing it. With a zip file, it will not open unless it is intact so a partial zip file should not open. Side benefit is that the zipped files will be smaller than the live database and the other associated files that Legacy uses. I agree with other comments that the problem is not with differences between Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8. I regularly use my Legacy data on all those Windows versions without any problems and move the database by placing the zip backup files in Google Drive. Cathy Bob Austen mailto:rgaus...@telus.net Thursday, 16 October 2014 1:36 AM Hi Lavern, It sounds like your problem could be with Dropbox - that is, there is no issue with Legacy, Win XP, or Win8.1. I use Dropbox. It can take some time for the files to sync from Dropbox to the laptop - depending on the size of your file, connections speed, it could be a few minutes to many minutes. My computer setup is the reverse, my laptop is on XP and is very slow. My file can take well over 30 minutes to sync. So make sure the icon says that the folders are up to date. It the file has been updated and they still don't match, then check to see that you have only the one file on Dropbox and that the laptop is working with the same file. It sounds like you have your working file on Dropbox. Remember that Dropbox is not a multiuser system. If you have Legacy open on both computers they will each save their own copy of the file and they will not be in sync. So, again, check your Dropbox folder, if there is only one file, make sure that it has been updated on the laptop before opening Legacy. Have Legacy open on only one computer at a time. RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy not syncing in Dropbox
Hi Ron, I totally agree about not having the live file on the Cloud. I have only a copy of my legacy file on Dropbox. I do have the larger .fdb file on Dropbox and then I can simply copy my Legacy file to my Dropbox folder for a backup at any time, even with the file open on Legacy. That takes about 5 seconds to copy (2+ hours to sync!), so I will do that before attempting anything other than data entry on Legacy - much quicker than using Legacy's backup feature. Of course one could do that type of backup to any other folder on their computer. It seems that many do have there working/live files on Dropbox, I hope they keep a very up to date copy on their own computer. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy not syncing in Dropbox
I don't use Dropbox for Legacy, but I do use it for Zoot XT, an information processor. The solution there is to set up a dummy folder on each computer for Zoot to save to as well as it's own folder databases. Then the dummy folder is put on Dropbox. What is saved to Zoot is smart foldered to the dummy. Dropbox syncs then only with the dummy folder, affecting the live Zoot folders/databases only after syncing is complete. Zoot XT is a set of very flexible smart databases on a stable engine Legacy developers might take a look at. My Legacy has only about 1400 records so easy to back up when doing regular drive backups, but for Bob's or other's much larger number of records it would be much faster and safer to backup just Legacy to Dropbox and forget syncing. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy not syncing in Dropbox
Thank you all for your comments. Sorry for the delay in responding. I have learned quite a bit about syncing and find that my concept of what syncing is was incorrect so what I was trying to do would never work. This was my first attempt at making two computers sync and I thought I could just make updates on my main computer (my case, my laptop) and those updates automatically take place on another computer; I didn't realize the steps needed to select the same file, unzip and restoring it were all part of the process. So, what I've been busy doing after reading your comments is going through the process a couple of times to see how it works. Here's what I did: My laptop (8.1) has my working file on it. I opened Legacy by clicking on the Legacy icon, then I put in some dummy changes, then saved/backed up the file to Dropbox. Next, I went to my computer (win XP). I clicked on the small Dropbox icon and it showed that the files were all Up to Date, so I clicked on the name of the zipped file (the one I had just made dummy updates on and backed up to Dropbox). That action took me to a screen that showed the file folders and to the left of the list under Folder Tasks - I clicked on Extract All Files. Legacy User

Thanks Mike, I tried Legacy Restore on XP computer and that also worked also. :-) One other question please: on the toolbar, I clicked on File to see what family file name appeared as my last accessed family file. Usually it is C:\Legacy\Data\lavernhallfamily.fdb Now it has C:DocumentsandSettings\user\ MyDocuments\Dropbox\lavernhallfamily\ 2014-10-16 3:26 33PM\lavernhallfamily.fdb Is this ok? Thanks. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy not syncing in Dropbox
Mike will probably answer this also. The last message from Lavern said Now it has C:DocumentsandSettings\user\ MyDocuments\Dropbox\lavernhallfamily\ 2014-10-16 3:26 33PM\lavernhallfamily.fdb This means that the fdb file is being accessed from inside the zip backup file which is in the Dropbox. You will have problems with that. Like Mike said, you should use Restore Family File inside of Legacy to unzip the backup data files and place them into the correct location. Later when you backup again, you can point the backup zip files at the Dropbox. It is just the restore that you are missing. As Mike said, don't use the Windows unzip program but use the restore function inside of Legacy. [LegacyUG] Legacy not syncing in Dropbox
Hello all, I hope you will be able to help me with this problem. I have a new laptop with window 8.1 and I have my old computer operating on windows XP. I have the latest version if Legacy 7.5 installed on both, but I cannot get them to sync. Here's what happens: I make entries on my laptop (win 8.1) by selecting the icon on my desktop, entering Legacy, then making updates. Then I save the file to Dropbox. When I go to check if the updates have been made on my computer (win XP), the Dropbox icon shows that everything is in sync; however when I enter the Legacy file itself, there are no updates recorded! It doesn't matter if I enter Legacy by clicking on the Dropbox icon and going to the file in the directory, or if I click on the Legacy icon and the program opens; I still receive an error message, Error opening database. Would you like to Try It Again? I select Yesand then (fortunately) the program opens. What am I doing wrong? Is it possible that 8.1 and XP are not compatible? Any help would be appreciated. RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy not syncing in Dropbox
Hi Lavern, It sounds like your problem could be with Dropbox - that is, there is no issue with Legacy, Win XP, or Win8.1. Hope this helps. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy not syncing in Dropbox
Hi Lavern, Your problem may be that you are not giving it enough time to sync. I hope you have your XP computer well protected since you are using it online. However, I'm not clear about your process. Bob thinks you have your working file only in the Dropbox and that may be so. But you said: I make entries on my laptop (win 8.1) by selecting the icon on my desktop, entering Legacy, then making updates. Then I save the file to Dropbox. Since Legacy saves changes automatically, saving the file is not usually a step unless you are saving it in some new place. Where is your family file on your Win 8.1 computer? Is it in a Dropbox folder or not?I read you as saying you saved a copy to the Dropbox - or maybe the backup file. If it's the backup file in Dropbox, on the other computer you have to restore the backup. If it's the actual file you either have to make sure you are opening the copy that is in the Dropbox OR copy it to your Legacy Data folder on the other computer. Either way you have to make sure you are opening the copy of your file that you want on the XP computer and not just one of the same name saved in a different folder.
