Re: Another GFM weekend done
I'll add a big thanks to everyone who made me feel so very welcome. I had a great time and hope to attend again sometime soon. Special thanks to Cory Scott for the use of the camping gear, it was very much appreciated guy's. I was one of the 10 who started Mark's trek but not surprisingly turned back not much past the 1/2 mile point. I really can't wait to see Cotty's rest stop shot. Mark Doug's presentation was hilarious, and I'm glad I got to see it. The quality of the honorable mentions, let alone those of the place getter's was humbling. I was rushed for time to make my flight, so my apologies to anyone who I didn't say goodbye too in person. Re: PAW 2007 - 25 - GDG
Tough, contrasty light, Godfrey. I think you've done a terrific job controlling contrast around the face and neck on the person in the foreground. The veil looks a bit odd, though. The grass looks much lighter behind the veil than elsewhere (below the hand). The way you've toned down the shoulder brings out the muscles nicely. There's a bit of a dark halo on the left edge and towards the veil, but I guess that's just from creating a quick web version. Somehow I think you've applied the same working procedure as you described to me on my church-in-morning-fog shot last fall. :-) Also, I think the cheek-and-chin shadow on the person wearing sunglasses is too dark compared to the person in the foreground. The whole Pride concept bewilders me a little, so I find it difficult to comment on the content of your picture. I'm truly sorry about that. No. With the later versions of the firmware, the built-in flash can serve as a controller. I've used by AF540 GZ wireless on a tall stroboframe. Works well. No, the RTF flash can control an AF540FGZ as long as you are using firmware 1.10 or later. RE: ¿¿ 400mm f5.6 ?? (Bird lens)
Hi, Regarding the 500/4.5 from Pentax. I have the lens (there is one for sale in the Netherlands for around € 500) and must say I am not that satisfied regarding sharpness and CA. Might be my focusing skills, but I never managed to get a 'crisp' image out of the lens. Also, in almost every image clear purple/blue/green edges can be seen when looking closely. Although a long, big lens for an affordable price, and it really helps me get the shots I want, it is probably not the best in the (price)range. I have no experience with the 400/5.6 though... Just wanted to share my experiences. RE: Peso: Hummingbird trapped
We rescue several a day that get trapped in our back snow porch. There's enough big openings to fly a baby pterodactyl through, but the hummingbirds seem to generally be looking straight ahead, and then fly in a left-to-right/right-to-left motion in front of the glass, in apparent panic, followed by exhaustion. We can reach them easily so it's a matter of just bringing both hands slowly togethether until the hummingbird is cupped inside them, and then releasing them. They feel like velvet. They seem to have become accustomed to being handled a bit (unsure if it's the same ones we're catching over and over). They used to fly out of sight when released, whereas now they just fly 10 feet away to the nearest tree and then back to the feeder. Tom C. On 4/6/07, Bob W, discombobulated, unleashed: Interesting caption. Ten of us set out for the Attic Window peak that morning but only four of us made it all the way. Is this one of those Touching The Void stories? Did the others have to drag themselves back through the latrines? Scott Loveless, Brian (high school buddy not seen in 28 years who has agoraphobia) and myself made it to MacRae Peak - half an hour short of the Attic Window. Mark is like some sort of mountain goat on crack - he moves like a ferret with a rocket up it's chuff. *and* his pack(s) weighed more than my bag full of Darkside gear, so i have no excuses. Shamed again. Taking The Biscuit Award goes to Scott who showed tremendous stamina and sweated more than an Al-Quaida taxi driver during an air raid, hauling his respectable frame up ladders and across frictionless rock - pausing only half-way up a particularly nasty incline, muscles straining and breathing heavy, for a quick bivouac by leaning on a ledge and lighting up a ciggy. Re: ¿¿ 400mm f5.6 ?? (Bird lens)
I'm a K-500/4,5 user. It is a beast, and I wish it was sharper, but the CA is tameable. You just need to have a few things in mind. First, fokus is crittical, very crittical. It also helps to step down. Usually I shoot around f:8, but if I'm able to make a clean shot it makes decant results at 5,6. When talking about a clean shot I'm referring to the background. A nearly in fokus background is asking for trouble. The last, and perhaps most important factor is contrast in the subject it self. Subject with high contrasts definately need stepping down a lot. I'm still in the learing face, but I beleave I will get decent results after a year ot two ;-) Tim Typo Mostly Harmless - Original Message - From: F Mckenty [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Monday, June 04, 2007 10:04 PM Subject: Re: ¿¿ 400mm f5.6 ?? I have the lens (there is one for sale in the Netherlands for around € 500) and must say I am not that satisfied regarding sharpness and CA. Might be my focusing skills, but I never managed to get a 'crisp' image out of the lens. Also, in almost every image clear purple/blue/green edges can be seen when looking closely. Although a long, big lens for an affordable price, and it really helps me get the shots I want, it is probably not the best in the (price)range. I have no experience with the 400/5.6 though... There's a test on the Canon fitting version here: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/sigma_400_56/index.htm I have the Sigma APO 400/5.6 in Pentax K-AF mount and I've been quite happy with it. I haven't noticed any particularly tendency toward CA, but I haven't looked for it, either. Where might one find such a beast? It's not in the current Sigma lineup. OTOH, Sigma is apparently offering its newer DG 500mm f/4.5 in a Pentax AF mount (BH lists it as New, Arriving Soon). If I understand, this is a new design that replaces the previous 500 f/4.5 which Sigma had stopped offering in Pentax mount. I have the previous version Sigma 300 f/2.8 and it's a fantastic lens, especially compared against similar lenses at higher price ... so if the DG lenses are improved beyond that, they ought to be very good indeed. RE: Pentax Photo Gallery Response
To maybe clear the air, one of the judges was in Hawaii for a photo shoot for some upcoming advertising the week before last (difficult job, but someone had to do it), and the other was at a Pentax sponsored college championship sailing event last week (also a difficult job, but we all make sacrifices:). Actually, you may have even noticed yourself that there has been a bit of speculation about why it now seems to be taking longer for images to be reviewed. In fact, there are some who feel it has ceased altogether. That is really what prompted my contact. I honestly didn't think the Pentax/Hoya thing was having any bearing on the gallery schedule, but we are an insecure group. The primary reason I passed along your comments was because of the gallery activity plans being considered. Your response was considerate very much appreciated. Additionally, we are still getting a large volume of submissions and we take the time to review each picture.
