While walking along the shoreline, I spied this little dog, tied up
sitting a rocking chair crying. Looking more than a bit pathetic.
I
quickly shot off a half a dozen frames. Unfortunately the
 frames that
showed the pathos were a bit out of focus, well more than a bit, so
I
had to forgo my original intended title Pathetic porch pooch
 peals...
This one was nicely focused and so seems the dog so here is
Watchdog.

Re: Another GFM weekend done

2007-06-04 Thread David Savage
I'll add a big thanks to everyone who made me feel so very welcome. I
had a great time and hope to attend again sometime soon. Special
thanks to Cory Scott for the use of the camping gear, it was very
much appreciated guy's.

I was one of the 10 who started Mark's trek but not surprisingly
turned back not much past the 1/2 mile point. I really can't wait to
see Cotty's rest stop shot.

Mark Doug's presentation was hilarious, and I'm glad I got to see
it. The quality of the honorable mentions, let alone those of the
place getter's was humbling.

I was rushed for time to make my flight, so my apologies to anyone who
I didn't say goodbye too in person.

Cheers,

Dave

be happy to learn that he's recovering from his major
chemotherapy/radiation treatment well. He's still quite tired much of
the time, but all indications are that he's recovering well and is much
ahead of schedule in that regard.

I did my annual overnight on the mountain Thursday night and got some
fairly good shots in the early morning light on Friday.

On Friday evening there was a good presentation by Tony Sweet, then a
good bit of socializing around the camp site. I got to meet Dave Savage
and catch up with Cotty and some others I haven't seen in a while.

On Saturday morning I let a hike along some of the mountain's toughest
trails. We had 10 people start out and 4 of us did the whole route,
with others choosing their own turnaround points based on their ability
and/or time needs. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. Mark Cassino's
presentation on Saturday evening was predictably excellent. Some truly
 amazing photography.

Sunday was a bur for me: Judging the contest with my colleague Doug
Darth Brewer and doing the awards presentation took about 4 hours but
seemed to be over in just minutes. A couple of meetings with various
people, packing up the camp site and then on the road to the cabin in
Ashe county with barely time to catch my breath. I didn't have nearly
enough time to chat with people whom I get to see only rarely. My
apologies to anyone whom I accidentally slighted: There's just too much
work and not enough time for those of us involved in making this event
 happen.

Start making plans for next year. And get ready for some good on-line
galleries to start appearing in the next few days.

Re: PAW 2007 - 25 - GDG

2007-06-04 Thread AlunFoto
Tough, contrasty light, Godfrey.
I think you've done a terrific job controlling contrast around the
face and neck on the person in the foreground. The veil looks a bit
odd, though. The grass looks much lighter behind the veil than
elsewhere (below the hand). The way you've toned down the shoulder
brings out the muscles nicely. There's a bit of a dark halo on the
left edge and towards the veil, but I guess that's just from creating
a quick web version. Somehow I think you've applied the same working
procedure as you described to me on my church-in-morning-fog shot last
fall. :-)

Also, I think the cheek-and-chin shadow on the person wearing
sunglasses is too dark compared to the person in the foreground.

The whole Pride concept bewilders me a little, so I find it difficult
to comment on the content of your picture. I'm truly sorry about that.

Yes. I've found it yields good results in many situations. It's excellent when
people are moving about as on a dance floor or walking down the street. It's
even accurate enough for something as fast as this carnival ride if you track
with the action and keep the shutter halfway down as you follow.

No, the RTF flash can control an AF540FGZ as long as you are using
firmware 1.10 or later. This capability was added with 1.10, but the
manual predates that firmware revision.

Hi,

Regarding the 500/4.5 from Pentax. I have the lens (there is one for sale in
the Netherlands for around € 500) and must say I am not that satisfied
regarding sharpness and CA. Might be my focusing skills, but I never managed to
get a 'crisp' image out of the lens. Also, in almost every image clear
purple/blue/green edges can be seen when looking closely. Although a long, big
lens for an affordable price, and it really helps me get the shots I want, it
is probably not the best in the (price)range. I have no experience with the
400/5.6 though...

Just wanted to share my experiences.

BH is taking orders for the Pentax A 400/5.6. Probably just existing stock. I
doubt if Pentax is turning out more copies, but you can still get a new one. Of
course you can get a used one for less than half the price of new.

I have the Sigma APO 400/5.6 in Pentax K-AF mount and I've been quite
happy with it. I haven't noticed any particularly tendency toward CA,

Where might one find such a beast? It's not in the current Sigma lineup.

OTOH, Sigma is apparently offering its newer DG 500mm f/4.5 in a
Pentax AF mount (BH lists it as New, Arriving Soon). If I

f/4.5 which Sigma had stopped offering in Pentax mount.

  I have the previous version Sigma 300 f/2.8 and it's a fantastic

Used market only but relatively inexpensive, I've seen a few in recent times
 on Ebay UK.

AFAIK the Pentax A 400/5.6 is out of production also.

The DG 500/4.5 eh, didn't know they'd planned one, sounds great!

Pentax Photo Gallery Response

The judges for the photo gallery have had very busy schedules and

Sounds like a bittersweet moment of fond memories overlaid with

RE: Peso: Hummingbird trapped

2007-06-04 Thread Tom C
We rescue several a day that get trapped in our back snow porch. There's
enough big openings to fly a baby pterodactyl through, but the hummingbirds
seem to generally be looking straight ahead, and then fly in a
left-to-right/right-to-left motion in front of the glass, in apparent panic,
followed by exhaustion.

We can reach them easily so it's a matter of just bringing both hands slowly
togethether until the hummingbird is cupped inside them, and then releasing
them. They feel like velvet.

They seem to have become accustomed to being handled a bit (unsure if it's
the same ones we're catching over and over). They used to fly out of sight
when released, whereas now they just fly 10 feet away to the nearest tree
and then back to the feeder.

Thanks Paul. I didn't work that image very much, it's pretty much a straight
resize out of the camera. A bit of a crop would help, but more importantly,
a more dramatic angle of light would have helped more.

I agree, Jack.

Here's a quote from the FAQ:

Q: How will I know if my photos have been accepted for display? How
long will it take to find out?

A: After you have submitted your photos, please re-visit your account
over the next 7 days to be alerted of photo submission status.

So they actually promise a review within 7 days. If they can't keep
their own deadlines, then what I need is accurate information. Without
having to ask. I wouldn't mind if they had longer deadlines, actually,
as long as the messages they send are loud and clear.

2007-06-04 Thread Carlson, John___PAIC_SO
I typical art gallery can sometimes take months to consider a piece for
inclusion. With that in mind, the Photo Gallery selection process is
relatively fast. And, as we have said many times in various discussion
groups and forums, the Photo Gallery is a work in progress, is still
under development, and still in beta form. Additionally, we are still
getting a large volume of submissions and we take the time to review
each picture. We know this volume will only increase when the gallery
is released publicly, so we are taking steps to streamline the selection
process.

We do check in on the forums from time to time, and to be honest, some

I have the Sigma APO 400/5.6 in Pentax K-AF mount and I've been quite

Where might one find such a beast? It's not in the current Sigma lineup.

OTOH, Sigma is apparently offering its newer DG 500mm f/4.5 in a Pentax

a new design that replaces the previous 500 f/4.5 which Sigma had
 stopped offering in Pentax mount.

I have the previous version Sigma 300 f/2.8 and it's a fantastic lens,
especially compared against similar lenses at higher price ... so if the
DG lenses are improved beyond that, they ought to be very good indeed.

I'm a K-500/4,5 user. It is a beast, and I wish it was sharper, but the CA
is tameable. You just need to have a few things in mind. First, fokus is
crittical, very crittical.

It also helps to step down. Usually I shoot around f:8, but if I'm able to
make a clean shot it makes decant results at 5,6. When talking about a clean
shot I'm referring to the background. A nearly in fokus background is asking
for trouble.

The last, and perhaps most important factor is contrast in the subject it
self. Subject with high contrasts definately need stepping down a lot.

I'm still in the learing face, but I beleave I will get decent results after
a year ot two ;-)

Thanks for cluing me in on that!
I've been dreaming about that lens for a long time but I guess I wasn't
very well informed about it's actual capabilities.

 Hi,

Regarding the 500/4.5 from Pentax. I have the lens (there is one for sale
in the Netherlands for around € 500) and must say I am not that satisfied
regarding sharpness and CA. Might be my focusing skills, but I never
managed to get a 'crisp' image out of the lens. Also, in almost every
image clear purple/blue/green edges can be seen when looking closely.
Although a long, big lens for an affordable price, and it really helps me
get the shots I want, it is probably not the best in the (price)range. I
have no experience with the 400/5.6 though...

Just wanted to share my experiences.

If it need not necessarily be a genuine Pentax lens I would recommend
 the
Sigma 400 f/5.6 APO, pretty sharp wide open, great build quality, CA
 should
be non existant as it's an APO lens. There's a test on the Canon
 fitting
 version here:

 http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/sigma_400_56/index.htm

I have the Sigma APO 400/5.6 in Pentax K-AF mount and I've been quite
happy with it. I haven't noticed any particularly tendency toward CA,
but I haven't looked for it, either.
Where might one find such a beast? It's not in the current Sigma lineup.

OTOH, Sigma is apparently offering its newer DG 500mm f/4.5 in a Pentax
AF mount (BH lists it as New, Arriving Soon). If I understand, this is
a new design that replaces the previous 500 f/4.5 which Sigma had
 stopped offering in Pentax mount.

I have the previous version Sigma 300 f/2.8 and it's a fantastic lens,
especially compared against similar lenses at higher price ... so if the
DG lenses are improved beyond that, they ought to be very good indeed.

RE: Pentax Photo Gallery Response

2007-06-04 Thread Carlson, John___PAIC_SO
To maybe clear the air, one of the judges was in Hawaii for a photo
shoot for some upcoming advertising the week before last (difficult job,
but someone had to do it), and the other was at a Pentax sponsored
college championship sailing event last week (also a difficult job, but
we all make sacrifices:).

Thanks for your support.

Thanks, John. Actually, you may have even noticed yourself that there
has been a bit of speculation about why it now seems to be taking longer
for images to be reviewed. In fact, there are some who feel it has
ceased altogether. That is really what prompted my contact.
I honestly didn't think the Pentax/Hoya thing was having any bearing on
the gallery schedule, but we are an insecure group.
The primary reason I passed along your comments was because of the
gallery activity plans being considered.
Your response was considerate very much appreciated.

I typical art gallery can sometimes take months to consider a piece
for inclusion. With that in mind, the Photo Gallery selection process

is relatively fast. And, as we have said many times in various
discussion groups and forums, the Photo Gallery is a work in progress,

is still under development, and still in beta form. Additionally, we
are still getting a large volume of submissions and we take the time
to review each picture. We know this volume will only increase when
the gallery is released publicly, so we are taking steps to streamline

 the selection process.

We do check in on the forums from time to time, and to be honest, some

of the speculation, rumors and conspiracy theories give a pretty good
 chuckle.

 Thanks,

 I agree, Jack.

Here's a quote from the FAQ:

Q: How will I know if my photos have been accepted for display? How
long will it take to find out?

A: After you have submitted your photos, please re-visit your account
over the next 7 days to be alerted of photo submission status.

So they actually promise a review within 7 days. If they can't keep
their own deadlines, then what I need is accurate information.
 Without
having to ask. I wouldn't mind if they had longer deadlines, actually,

as long as the messages they send are loud and clear.

I asked the obvious question of Pentax and received the
 following
   response:

   Jack,

I can assure you that the delay in images accepted or on hold as

nothing to do with Pentax and Hoya activities in Japan. It is
   business
as usual for us here in the US and we do not anticipate any
 changes.

The judges for the photo gallery have had very busy schedules
 and
haven't had the time to look at some of the more recent
 submissions.
Additionally, the Photo Gallery is still under development and
 not
   in
its full working version. We are currently in the process of
 adding
   a
artist voting function. This will give the accepted artists in
 the

gallery the opportunity to vote on submissions by other artists
 to
determine if their images will make it to the final gallery.
 Also,
   we
are working on skinning the site in other languages so it is
   truly and international community.

Thank you for your concern, but everything is going well here.
