Re: laptops again...
My current MacBook Pro 15 inch working solidly for just over 2 years professionally. I will run it for 3 before moving up (length of Applecare warranty). It will go to my wife who currently uses a Powerbook G3 Pismo first purchased in 2000, still going strong, though pretty much useless for video, it does everything else required of it. I have loads of spares in the cupboard inc 2 screens. Real workhorse that one. Has removable bays which currently house 2 hi-cap batteries. She only recharges it at night, and it will go for 12 hours solid on battery! When cooking video, my MBP will die after an hour -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche -- http://www.cottysnaps.com _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Well, my last laptop lasted me 6 years. I'm going to clean off all the junk and either do a clean reinstall of windows or (more likely) put Linux on it; the biggest drawback it has is a max memory configuration of 1GB, but Linux will run just fine in that. A 2.4GHz Pentium 4 is still a decent amount of CPU power for everyday use, and 1400 x 1050 isn't to be sneezed at. I don't know how Australian prices compare to US prices, but I've always thought that buying at the cutting edge made very little sense. You can easily double the price of the machine for perhaps a 20% increase in power for most tasks. I think you're much better off buying a cheaper machine today. If you really need more power then you'll be able to replace it in two or three years for about the amount of money you saved (assuming, of course, that you haven't spent the money on something else such as a lens). -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: laptops again...
Paul, I suspect you are talking about BlueTooth, not Blue-Ray (which is a media/storage solution). .. or you are from a different planet that already has blue-ray in the their ears. :-) I understand people who avoid certain brands because of the manufacturer's reputation (for whatever reason). I have some brands here and there that I am trying to avoid, - but not many. OTOH, the only Sony product besides media (tapes and floppies) that I've owned was Clie (Palm Pilot clone). IMHO, Sony is overpriced for their quality. People pay for the brand name that I personally do not value much. The innovative value of Sony is also much more limited (as opposed to the frequent perception). In my opinion, Sony was good with their Trinitron technology, and they they contributed to making small tape players (walkman) ubiquitous. (But even then, other companies' products were of a better quality, - e.g. Aiwa's tape players.) I cannot think of anything else significant. As for the evilness of Sony, - they bought Aiwa that had products that were superior to Sony's, and essentially killed it. (I've heard somebody saying that Aiwa was in stagnation before it was bought, but I don't know if that's true or not.) In any case, - I liked Aiwa: it had one of the best technology of making very great quality sound in a small volume: small speakers, headphones, etc, - all at a very moderate price. Aiwa x815 headphones ($40-45 at the time) purchased in ~1995 were comparable in quality to Sennheiser HD-280 Pro and Sony MDR-V6 ($80-100), Igor Mon Feb 8 10:19:38 CST 2010 paul stenquist wrote: On Feb 8, 2010, at 8:26 AM, Doug Franklin wrote: On 2010-02-08 1:03, John Francis wrote: I would *NEVER* buy computer products from Sony. Re: laptops again...
From a US perspective the price would be a little high. But that machine should be capable of just about anything. We've just bought an HP for home use, but which has more than enough power to run Photoshop. Our configuration is: o Core 2 Duo processors (you definitely win here) o 4GB RAM o 640GB (2x320GB) o CD/DVD optical drive Blu-Ray would be nice, but it adds a lot to the price. o 17.3 1600x900 screenYour extra pixels are good Not quite as good as yours, but we only paid $850 US. That's around $1K AUD. I don't know how much GST would add to that. On Mon, Feb 08, 2010 at 06:03:38PM +1000, Tanya Love wrote: Ok, so I've come across an AMAZING deal, on an awesome machine! Hi Tanja - I wouldn't go near a Sony Vaio, a friend of mine had one which was absolutely terrible to work with, and unreliable. I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite Pro S300 for A$1300 with which I am very satisfied. I installed Elements on it and have used it for processing images quite happily. Vista Business, Intel Core2Duo P8400 chip @ 2.26GHz, 2GB RAM, 150GB Hitachi HDD. That may look under-spec'd by comparison with your latest option, but it works very well, and might be worth looking at something similar. If you want to, pop down and have a look... RE: laptops again...
Thanks Steve - this is the kind of information that I was hoping to hear. I do *want* a laptop over a PC because I like to be able to move around the house, more so than take the computer out and about with me. I often sit in bed with my kids next to me working, or at the dining room table next to them whilst they are doing their homework. It would also give me the opportunity when I need it to take it with me on a shoot etc. I totally agree with the battery life thing -the Asus G73 only has 1-2 hours, which is crappity crap crap, however, as I am mostly using it at home, I always have it plugged in anyways (my current HP has always had terrible battery life and from Day 1, I've never even been able to watch a full length movie on it without it dying). The reason I want such a high spec'd system is because it will be a long time before I can afford to upgrade again and I really need this to be able to work well for at least the next 3-4 years without the risk of becoming outdated. I totally agree with you all about the size and weight but don't need it to be *that* portable, but fast and able to handle anything that I can throw at it for as long as possible is a priority. I actually *really* don't want a screen any bigger than my current 15.9 but if I have to live with a bigger one to be able to get (and afford!) the specs that I need, then I will. To those who have suggested less spec'd laptops, I currently have a HP Pavillion dv6500 - it is a 2Core Duo T7100 @ 1.80 GHz. I upgraded it last week from 2 to 4gb, and also upgraded the HDD from 160gb (it was CONSTANTLY full) 7200rpm to a 500gb 5400rpm. It is running Vista Home Premium, 32bit. Even since doing the upgrades last week, it is still struggling, especially now that I have the much higher resolution images to work on from the K-7. So, the plan is that my husband will inherit this one, and I will be set up with the new one. I am so sick of twiddling my thumbs waiting for my computer to do what I ask it to, and I haven't even really gotten back into my photography work properly yet. I am determined to kick off properly this time and to be set up for a good, efficient work flow. Well, as much as I can afford anyways. We already have a beautiful Samsung 22 monitor that will be used as my second monitor and my main editing screen, however I *do* still need the monitor to be decent. Storage is also a very high priority, I hated dropping back to a 5400rpm HDD when I upgraded last week, but s badly needed the extra space and couldn't afford the 7200 equivalent, plus I knew that this computer would be my hubby's and speed/performance is not an issue for him, all he ever uses it for is to surf the net! However, the Asus has two HDD bays and that is important for me. I really want a dual drive set up as I have lost two HDDs and two memory cards in the past year and this has not been fun to live through. I did a beautiful shoot the other week with 4 cute little models and pettiskirts, and I had a gorgeous scene set up in the rainforest complete with an antique cast iron bed that we carted out there and the whole lot disappeared when my 4gb Hitachi Microdrive finally gave up on me (remember the surgery we all did many moons ago on those Creative Labs mp3 players?!? Lol). I received 2 quotes to recover the shots, both amounting to about $2400 and suffice to say, I will never get to see those shots again! :( Anyways, can you Steve, or somebody else, explain to me what a TN display is? I know what I *need* my display to be capable of (I want it to be as high res as possible, and to be able to be calibrated accurately and to render highlights and shadows properly (ie. to properly show hotspots and/or blacks as well as a histogram can), but the technical side and specs of what I need to achieve this is beyond my limited knowledge. I was actually going to post specifically to ask about the pros/cons of a gaming machine for the kind of work that I am doing but read some geeky type forum threads of others who were trying to decide between the Asus G73 and the Dell 6400 and as I know that the Dell is catered specifically towards photographers, I assumed that the Asus would suit too. I also did some research and found that the graphics card on the Asus is better than the top spec'd Geoforce card so thought that I would surely be fine with it. But if that's not the case and anyone could explain to me why, in language that I can comprehend, I would be very grateful! :) Tan. -Original Message- From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of steve harley Sent: Tuesday, 9 February 2010 5:06 AM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: laptops again... I don't necessarily need Blue Ray, but I think I want it. Although based on reviews, I think I would go with a Panasonic machine.
