Re: [pinhole-discussion] PS4
Hi all PS4 swappers ! Mea culpa for my long delay in organizing the PS4 swap. Some personal problems + an overload of unscheduled heavy tasks to do have prevented me to keep I the initial time schedule. I'm going away today for my lecture (see Pinhole Visions events) at the Musée Niépce in Chalon sur Saône ( birthplace of photography). I shall be back on Saturday and I promise to send on Sunday 7 some precise info directly (not on this list) to all of you who had signed for the PS4 (with the PS4 participant sign-in procedure). We shall constitute quickly the groups, so that we can hold the initial deadline of : Saturday February 29 th 2004. So, I beg your indulgence for my long silence ( I would have preferred to be able to keep in time!)... Do not worry, you will get a good start on next Sunday.. Thanks to all who signed; I'm sure PS4 will be un grand cru ! Cheers from France, Jean - Original Message - From: Ingo Günther ingoguent...@web.de To: pinhole-discussion@p at ??? [pinhole-discussion] PS4 Sign-in procedure
Hi all ! I know that most every one who has shown some interest has already sent a message. But you have probably read in my previous post PS4 - Guidelines suggestions - Please read carefully , that we have to establish a precise list of participants in order to constitute the groups. It's why you are invited to sign in more formally on another e-mail address; this will also keep the discussion list from being over run with PS4 print swap messages. Procedure. So starting today , if you want to be involved in the PS4 swap , please e-mail me at the following address: j.daubas.ph...@free.fr with Subject line : PS4 participant In your Sign in message, please indicate : 1) Your name, 2) your snail mail address (complete, with country) 3) your e-mail and eventually, - if you have any subject of preference for which you would like to see a Group constituted ( must be open subjects) - any other commentary or suggestion about the guidelines For those who feel themselves ready to take responsibility of coordination of one group, please tell me in your post. The sign-in procedure will close on Sunday October 26th 23:59 (GMT) and the list of participants will be definitive. By advance, all my thanks for your collaboration Cheers from France Jean
[pinhole-discussion] PS4 IMPORTANT NOTICE for ORGANIZATION - Please read carefully
The pinhole swap announcement has caused a major hurricane to blow on this list ! At present time, about 50 people from plenty of countries are willing to participate in either one or two of the formulas. And it will not stop just now. I am also very happy to find both some well-known names (like old friends) with whom I enjoyed the various previous swaps and new pinholers eager to try the experiment ... In fact, I am not surprised of this success : pinholers are genuine enthusiastic people ! and the future months promise to be full of pleasure for all of the participants! but... ... we have to manage with this success and to organize the things. this will be done easily but only needs a little discipline by everyone and some patience. This will help us the moderators to set up things clearly. 1) The 1st major point to clear is : Distinction between 2 kinds of Pinhole Swaps It seems from all your messages under the PS4 subject that not everybody clearly makes the distinction between : - the Christmas swap also called Holiday swap or the list - the more formal PS4 Pinhole Print Spring Swap 2004 I shall not make again a detailed description of the 2 formulas. they are quite different and I suggest that you read Tom Miller's excellent post about this topic (2003/10/13) to understand the different mechanisms involved. I paste Tom's post at the end of this present message. The 2 swaps are completely independent, with very different rules; they respond to distinct desires of exchange between pinholers. One may participate in either one of these swaps or in the 2 . I'm asking everybody willing to participate (even if you have already sent your intention message) to completely separate the posts about the 2 swaps. Why ? Just because I shall not imply myself in the management of the Holiday swap. at present time, I do not know who will do that job but I know it will not be me. It probably needs a coordinator to set up this swap, even if this open formula needs less organization than the formal one I announced the PS4 formal swap because I am ready to launch this project as coordinator and I wish to concentrate on the success of this project with help of everyone. Consequently, please use PS4 subject line only when you post about this formal swap. by advance, all my thanks! 2) PS4 organization, rules, etc. several among you ask for some more info about their commitment in PS4. It's normal. I am preparing a complete post with proposals about organization of PS4. It still requires some work and now it is 02:55 AM here in France and I need some sleep ;-) This will be sent on this list in the next 24 hours and the message will bring many answers to your questions regarding the formal PS4. Without revealing the whole content, I may tell you now that the 1st step will be constitution of several PS4 groups since we are very numerous. Also it will precise the sign in procedure and will open discussion of several points which will constitute the rules after we find agreement on them... And for preventing to pollute the general pinhole list with too many PS4 related posts, after this coming general message, all the communication about PS4 will be directed on a new e-mail address. Now, thanks for your patience and your enthusiasm and please still wait until Thursday for the next important step! Have good pinholing! Cheers from France, Jean PS : Tom's explanations about Christmas/ holiday swap opposed to formal swap (as PS4) : Hi Jean, Thanks for offering to coordinate another formal swap. You did an excellent job in coordinating the formal swap that I took part in a couple of years ago. It is good that you mentioned the distinction between the formal and the holiday swaps. Some things I noticed that were different about them are: 1) the the number participants; 2) the size and quality of images; 3) level of reciprocity. I think these are inter-related. The rules for the holiday swap were that any number of people could sign up for the swap, but each individual would send cards to only as many folks at they felt they could. If I remember correctly, there were 49 folks signed up for the holiday swap last year. I know that all 49 folks didn't send out 49 images. This is OK, since it was part of the ground rules, but should be kept in mind. On the other hand, so many people signed up for the formal swaps that they were broken into two or three groups based on subject. I remember about 15 - 18 people in each group? Some folks participated in more than one. Each person committed to send a photo to ALL other participants. Jean, I know this caused you a lot of work because some folks fell way behind the deadline and needed extra reminding. However, everyone in the group I was in (the self-portrait group) did participate in the end. This was truly remarkable and joyful. I've also noticed that generally smaller images were sent in the holiday swap, Christmas

I join Claudia and the others who already expressed their pleasure of receiving wonderful pinhole postcards since December. 3 more arrived this morning in my mailbox... it's always such a surprise to discover these images, the variety of subjects, techniques, presentations... I'm sure the swap is not yet finished : the bunch of pictures I sent several days ago are somewhere (?) , maybe not yet very far, because there has been a strike of the workers at the Mail Sorting Center since the beginning of January ; it's now ending but plenty of mail has stayed blocked in their bags and I suspect postcards will be treated after commercial letters; very difficult to know, some syndicates are still asking for going on the strike movement. Re: [pinhole-discussion] What is a silver print really?
Hi all, I just looked in one of my favorite Photography books : Looking at photographs - a guide to technical terms by Gordon Baldwin. published by the J. Paul Getty Museum in association with British Museum Press. Copyright (c) 1991 ISBN 0-89236-192-1 Here is what Gordon Baldwin writes (a short entry since author does not appreciate the term !) :;-) SILVER PRINT : This a shorthand term for what should be called a GELATIN SILVER print, meaning a paper coated with a gelatin emulsion containing SILVER SALTS. The term should be avoided because most black and white photographic prints contain silver, and the term is therefore too inclusive to be useful . By the way, Gelatin silver print and Silver salts have much longer definitions in Baldwin's book, but if I begin to type in my post all the excellent explanations, I'm sure we shall end with the 87 pages of Looking at photographs in the same message ! Hope it helps, Cheers from France Jean Jean Daubas, auteur-photographe 16 rue de Bourg-Sec 25440 LIESLE France j.daubas.ph...@free.fr
Re: [pinhole-discussion] off topic: photoshop tutorial book?
Hello Peter ! I join with Heidi for mentioning the special qualities of Martin Evening's book, Photoshop for photographers Like you, I recently wished to make an approach of Photoshop, knowing that my visual and technical universe is mostly traditional photography and that I am not a computer fanatic. I took a long time for searching a good book which would allow a photographic oriented approach of Photoshop, without forgetting BW images. I saw plenty of English or French written books and finally I stopped my choice on Martin Evening's book. My version is Photoshop 6 pour les Photographes translated in French from original Focal Press English version. At present time the Photoshop 7 translation does not exist but it is of no importance since most of the spirit of Photoshop is the same. The book contains a CD rom with some pictures for exercises, tutorials, plugs ins. The author is himself an English (London based) photographer so that the content is very much in correspondence with our photo preoccupations ; he studies in depth the photographic uses of Photoshop amongst them BW, image repairing, etc... I've not yet finished to study it but I already learnt very useful features! Peter, I presume there is not a Swedish translation but maybe you may find a German version, or just stick to the English one :-) Happy pinholing to all, jean - Original Message - From: CRABBE Heidi S h.s.cra...@staffs.ac.uk To: pinhole-discussion@p at ??? Image Vision was Re: [pinhole-discussion] eye camera
Hello Pete, Believe it or not, I had the intuition 2 days ago, reading the Human eye thread, that you, Pete, would post something about it and here it comes ! Why did I think of the intervention of a blind photographer ? Just because the discussion was slowly but surely expanding from a question about the Image to a question about the Vision , and when it comes to Vision we all know that visually impaired and/or blind people have a lot to say... While writing this , I just cannot prevent myself from quoting some lines of the back cover of Evgen Bavcar' s book Le voyeur absolu. Evgen Bavcar is a Slovenian born (Vojke Flis, if you are still on this list, you probably know him!) blind photographer living in France since the 70's; he is also a universitary researcher in philosophy and aesthetics. Here is my translation for the question he rises in his book : This exceptional experience [a blind man taking photographs] leads to this essential question : Would not be - before any other thing - photography, a mental image of the world, and only that ? An effect of sensuality, for which the print would only constitute a secondary phenomenon ? Human eye ? Pinhole camera ? Image ? Vision ?... 2003 begins with all these questions and, I'm sure, 2003 will end with all these questions ;-) Let's share our Visions, let's share our Images Cheers from France Jean - Original Message - From: pete eckert peteeck...@mindspring.com To: pinhole-discussion@p at ??? Re: [pinhole-discussion] Season's greetings to all!
Hi all pinholers around this list ! I sincerely join Chuck, Guy, Kurt ( + the coming ones) to express my thanks to Gregg for all the silent work he does for the Pinhole Visions, the list, WPPD and for the quality of tools he offers to our p at ???munity for sharing our passion. Today is Christmas, and 2002 is soon ending. A look backwards may be useful but the dark clouds looming ahead [Guy] weight heavily on my thoughts. As I know that all of you on this list have a special awareness of how beauty, creativity, life may exist through a tiny simple hole in a box, I would like to ask you for 2003 to keep on defending your generous vision of life . At a time where there is more and more discussion everywhere about the status of Images, the relations between Image and reality, truth and representation, I am sure we pinholists are touching the essential point of this issue. If you are not sure of that, just transform a room into a Camera Obscura in which people (of all ages) may enter and invite them to discover (= to feel physically + with their thought) what is une image. Things are never the same after this experience than before! And we all come back to the oldest questions stimulating mankind through philosophy, religions, art, science,... that makes Life ! Pinhole practice opens our eyes to the essence of Light, Space, Time, Image. I'm sure it opens our brain, I'm sure it opens our heart, too I was just wanting to wish you all happiness for the future , not only material comfort but rather Light in your hearts. I have been much too long, but I cannot dissociate my art practice from my vision of the world and I needed to share it [just a bit ;-) ] with you. Thanks for your patience, my friends. Re: [pinhole-discussion] New very slow film
Michael, I plan to try this film soon but for lens pictures. About differences between Chimie II and Chimie IV, I understand that : - Chimie Type II is reserved for ROTARY process and above all is adapted for development at 38°C temperature. This is marketed as an advantage for studio photographers who are accustomed to develop colour processes (C41 and/or Ekta E6) at this high temperature. - Chimie type IV is more versatile and may be used for tray development as well as tank development or rotary process. It may be used at 20°C temperature which makes it really practical for most black white darkroom aficionados... And with this type IV, you can play with levels of the gamma to get higher gamma index (variations on contrast of the negatives). In any case, I compared the cost of this film with traditional ones : the cost of the developing soup is really too high... Actually there has been 2 models of Click : Clicks I and Clicks II were built from 1958 until 1970, mainly in Germany. For some time an Agfa factory located in Strasbourg (France, at the border with Germany) built some Click I cameras. This French production was motivated by trying to escape the tariff barriers which, at the end of the 50 ies prevented entrance of foreign cameras in France ... The French models are heavier than the German ones because a small piece of metal had been added inside just to make them weight a little more : weight was considered as a sign of seriousness by French consumers ! Another difference is the presence of a small plate Fabriqué en France on the Strasbourg models . Well, all this historical stuff is not so important! Just get a Click or a Clack, and turn it into a pleasant pinhole camera and have fun with it... [pinhole-discussion] New very slow film
Hi all ! I know that among our lensless community, we are numerous to have a strong sympathy for slow or ultra-slow films which, combined with the specificities of pinhole photography, allow us to experiment new dimensions of time, duration, etc. Unfortunately, slow films are not so numerous and we just lost one of them : Agfapan 25, since Agfa officially announced its definitive discontinuation. I really loved it and was not far from thinking that it was the best film ... And now arrives a completely new product which seems to have astonishing characteristics : Gigabit film. I suggest you to have a look at http://www.gigabitfilm.de/ where you will find all info about this astonishing product (some pages or translated in English, I believe). And if you want to try it, you will find the address of the different importers for various countries. I have not yet tried it but hope to do it soon. Hi you, happy Pinholer from somewhere in the world ! Following the success of the previous pinhole printswaps organized between members of this list, we are preparing a new one for next spring ! Maybe you wish to participate in the next pinhole print swap ? If so, there's nothing easier ! For now, please, just make me know ! We have some time ahead but the sooner, the better, since if we are numerous, we shall have to share in different groups with a moderator for each group. At the present time, no guidelines have been fixed yet; this will be done together later when we have a clear view of how many we are... We just need to know who is interested... I suggest that we do not bother the whole discussion-list with our printswap stuff. Please e-mail me at the following e-mail address (different from my e-mail address for the list) with the precise suggested subject line : jean.dau...@freesbee.fr Subject : S2PP (it makes me earn a lot of time when sorting my received e-mails !) Re: [pinhole-discussion] Blind photographer
Hi all, I am glad to see your interest for Evgen Bavcar' photographs and written works. I have been lucky to meet him in Paris about 12 or 13 years ago when he was the main guest of the Mois de la photographie in Paris. I like very much his pictures but I am still more interested in his texts about Art , generally speaking. Since 1972 he was a student in Philosophy of Aesthetics in Université de Paris I and in 1976 he began to work on his Thèse de Doctorat d'Etat (= Thesis for becoming national Doctor) choosing his subject : Art and Society in the contemporary French aesthetics ... He wrote a lot and also recorded several series about artist Jackson Pollock for the French radio broadcast channel France-Culture. In 1992 he wrote Le voyeur absolu (= the absolute voyeur) in which he writes about his experience as a blind photographer. This leads him (and us !) to the question :is not photography only a mental image of the world and only that ? A sensual effect whose the photographic paper print would be only a secondary phenomenon...? For those of you who want to go deeper in the realm of blind photography, I suggest the reading of a special issue of Mexican magazine Luna Cornea completely devoted to this subject with numerous texts and photographs. Luna Cornea numero 17, April 1999. The magazine is published in Spanish with very complete English translations in the 2nd part of the book (200 pages!). I ordered my issue about 1 year ago at Photo-eye bookshop. Try on www.photoeye.com. For French reading people of our community, there has been several articles gathered under the title de l'Aveuglement (= about blindness) in the January 2001 issue of French magazine Pour Voir (now disappeared!). It contains interview with Evgen Balcar, an article about Jane Evelyn Atwood's recent work on blind children, article about strange Sophie Calle's research gathering portraits of blind + texts by blind people + photographic representation of the dreamed image expressed by blind, articles about works of Yoshiko Murakami, Patrick Tosani, etc.. If you are interested, please contact me off-list. And now, just do not forget that Evgen Bavcar is not an exception; story of photography is full (as son as the mid 19th century) of non seeing people trying to capture their images of the world with this medium ... Aren't we going a bit blind when shooting the way we do? Joao, I believe the answer is contained in the question ! :-) Cheers from France Jean - Original Message - From: Joao Ribeiro jribe...@greco.com.br To: pinhole-discussion@p at ??? Rosanne, Thanks for your positive and sensible words about our last pinhole swap! I also live with all the prints under my eyes and every day makes me more familiar with each of the participants... Like you, I was member of the Group 1 and I already had the opportunity to say to all the members of the group how much I had been impressed by the quality (not only pinhole picture quality, but human quality too) of our exchanges. Since 1999, I participated in 4 pinhole print swaps , among which, I was coordinator for Zero 2000 print swap (in 2000) and for Group 1 self-portrait 2001 printswap (ending now). These swaps have always been very strong experiences and I really wish to express all my thanks to all who sent me pictures and words. They all helped me to go further in my perception of pinhole photography and ..maybe, of life... Thanks again. Now, let's turn towards future! Rosanne wrote : I am looking forward to the next one as well. For those who did not feel right participating the first time, please consider doing so this Spring. It will open new vistas for you. Re: [pinhole-discussion] Pinhole size for a Nikon bodycap
Hi Hans , I often use a Pinhole Body Cap on my old Nikon FE body or sometimes on a Nikon F801 because it allows me to have both lens and pinhole camera when I can bring with me only minimum weight of photo equipment... I had bought 2 years ago a Finney pinhole body cap which I ordered at Pinhole Resource. It is sold with the following data : f/ 180 @ 50 mm Diameter :.011, which makes something between 0,27 and 0,28 mm I think . The results are really very pleasant ! Hello Rob ! Thanks again for your efforts and for the fast change in New year 2002 Leaving email addresses is a good idea but I think it may be too late. Yes, I understand very well your answer about this question. I presume the readers of this post will probably add naturally their e-mail address besides the snail mail if they wish to register on the New Year mailing. Leaving email addresses is a good idea but I think it may be too late. I probably should've added that in the beginning. There are several ways for us to get everyone's email address afterward if we wanted to, but for now we either have to stick with snail mail addresses or figure out some way to have people go back and add their address to. There's no way to do that right now and I think we'd end up with half of the email addresses missing in the end anyway. It might also be too much of a hassle for people who've already signed up. If any new people want to add their email address in the address field they can do that - I think a couple people actually thought ahead and did that. Re: [pinhole-discussion] pinhole camera in any lang
Hello Jim, 1) In French, pinhole camera = appareil à sténopé but very often people just call the pinhole camera sténopé, making a shortcut between the pinhole itself (sténopé has its origins in a Greek word opé meaning -hole- and close to ôps meaning -eye-) and the apparatus using it (the camera). pinhole photography : photographie au sténopé. 2) What do you mean by natural camera ? If it means a normal camera with lens, then : camera = appareil de photo(shortcut : appareil when everybody knows that you are speaking about photography!) 3) If you are looking for various translations in all kinds of languages, just go back and have a look at the WPPD site www.pinholeday.org When preparing the event for inside the International coordination Team, I had the luck to coordinate the work of a nice group of translators all around the world and we managed, thanks to Gregg' efforts, to offer a 12 languages version of the site. Re: [pinhole-discussion] Pintoid and Celestial Seasonings Teas
Hi all ! There are some French bon-bon hard candies that come in a round can, although some have switched to plastic cans. That's true and it becomes really difficult to find metal cans and when you find some, most of the time they seem to become more and more expensive ! the manufacturers consider using metal cans as a sign of produit de Luxe compared to ugly plastic or cardboard boxes and they are decided to make the customer pay for this elitist behaviour ! It's why I spend some time in junk shops searching for old tins, metal boxes, drug boxes, etc. Unfortunately, the problem is that, very often, these old decorated metal boxes have some charm and finally I am reluctant to cut them and transform them in pinhole cameras... To conclude , it seems that being a pinholist may have some -un (?)-pleasant consequences : - becoming fat by never ending eating all kinds of candies, cakes, oat meal, and drinking beer cans to get the boxes for pinhole cams, - becoming poor by buying all kinds of objects ( and even ...anything) not for the merchandise itself but just for the container, - having the place you live in changed in a genuine souk where no room is left because you never stop to accumulate strange and absolutely unuseful ( for non-pinhole persons !) things in all kinds of matters (from steel to fruits), all kind of sizes (from tiny matchbox to a caravan) and all kind of shapes You know what : I'm a happy pinholist :-) Cheers from France, with my special support for US people Jean+ - Original Message - From: Uptown Gallery Frame Shop, LLC gall...@uptowngallery.org To: pinhole-discussion@p at ??? Since Guy had introduced this Lith subject, I wanted to post a very interesting resource book about lith printing where you could find excellent comparisons between conventional and Lith prints from the same negative. The book, which I find excellent on many other subjects (especially toning procedures) is : BEYOND MONOCHROME, a Fine Art Printing Workshop by Tony Worobiec and Ray Spence, (c) 1999 ; Published by : Fountain Press Ltd, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, UK ISBN 0 86 343 313 8 There is a whole chapter dedicated to Lith printing, dealing with choice of papers and developers, details of procedures and tests, solving specific problems such as pepper fogging; one of the most interesting part is about the combinations of lith printing with various toners and the very unique results obtained with Lith + split toning. As for the whole book, the choice of the photographs illustrating text descriptions is really perfect and the details of print aspect are really very well rendered through the printing process of the book. Re: [pinhole-discussion] Beginning Paper?
Michael, As Guillermo answered, basically any BW paper without water marks would do it. Though, there may be some issues to consider : - if you use curved plane cameras, I suggest you not to use glossy surface paper : the internal reflections inside the camera (box, can, etc) generally produce two dark lines on the negative paper , where the reflection causes over-exposure... Give preference for matte or semi-matte surfaces. - RC papers have an advantage for drying fast and flat (useful when you contact the paper for making a positive!) - if you want to use Fibre base paper rather than RC, it is easier if you plan to make contact positive prints from your pinhole negative papers to use a thinner paper support, such as the Single-Weight FB, VC paper available at Freestyle Camera www.freestylecamera.com at low cost. Unfortunately, it seems you can no longer find this paper in an other surface than Glossy ( inconvenient previously described ). - VC papers seem for me the best choice since you can easily adapt the contrast of your paper negatives by using, while you make your picture, multigrade filters in front of your pinhole. If consistently your paper negatives are too contrasty and blocked up, use of a soft filter may help a lot ! FAST PAPER is an oxymoron. It has been agreed -sort of- in this list that ISO-6 is a good starting point for modern BW paper emulsion Yes, this is a good basis but I notice that I'm more often close to ISO 4; maybe, it is just because I prefer to expose towards over-exposure than under-exposure... More info settles on the support and you can always get it back (take your time) as if there is no info recorded, you have nothing to do ;-( Hope it helps Cheers from France Jean - Original Message - From: G.Penate pen...@home.com To: pinhole-discussion@p at ??? About Isabelle Lousberg's The Széchenyi Baths series. These pictures are not pinhole photographs (unlike Castles or Sunflowers). In her introduction in French, Isabelle is just a little more precise about the technique that in her English text ; she explains : Interesting subject for pinhole photography that I chose to cover using an almost normal camera because of technical and time reasons. Human being until then absent in the pictures (because of pinhole technique) now appears floating between two waters Very nice pictures even if not pinhole ones ! Re: [pinhole-discussion] Multiple Pinholes
Temi, I never succeeded in finding a safe formula for my multiple pinholes cameras : there are really a lot of variables which influence the exposure . The major ones seem to be : - 1) the way you use multiple pinhole : opening /closing the various pinholes simultaneously or not. The sum of x exposures has not the same effect than a x time unique exposure - 2) the disposal of your pinholes and the degree of overlapping picture they generate. This determinates the fall off which occurs on the outer limits of the image formed by each pinhole. So, depending on the plans of your camera and the relative size of pinholes (if they are different), you will have to try to evaluate the way the light will hit your film or paper on the other side. As a rule, I generally give my preference to overexposure when I start searching the right exposure because, in pinhole photography we are very more often risking underexposure than overexposure. In practical conditions, if you have a multiple pinhole camera with only 2 normally sized pinholes spaced so that the overlapping zone is narrow, starting by determining exposure for 1 pinhole and using it for a simultaneous use of the 2 pinholes gets you very close to the right exposure... But if you try a 30 pinholes camera with a match box, then, you will have to take in account the total quantity of light (cumulative exposures) hitting your film or paper ! I wish you good experiments ! Jean - Original Message - From: Temi t...@temioriginals.com To: pinhole-discussion@p at ??? Would it be best to come up with a total opening and figure time from this or to figure time for one pinhole and then divide this by the number of pinholes used. ___ Pinhole-Discussion mailing list Pinhole-Discussion@p at ??? unsubscribe or change your account at http://www.p at ???/discussion/

Since then, some of us have tried to organize a little the things to help transform a generous idea into an international event while never forgetting that our only goal is to share the pleasure of pinhole photography and to promote this not-so-well known practice of photography. As we need to know your opinions about some major choices (name, date, etc.) Pinhole polls have been open... Re: [pinhole-discussion] the Pinhole Polls are open...
Hi all, Considering the date for the first edition of the future Pinhole Day, which is one of the issues which we have to vote for and which is the most discussed issue about Pinhole Polls until now, I would like, if you allow me, to add short comments. It has been not even 3 weeks now since the idea of creating a Pinhole Day has been generated by Valentines' Day. Such an idea, if we want to make it into a successful event, needs a minimum of coordination, information spreading, technical preparation. Even if we do not have oversized ambitions (and don't worry, we definitely have not!), we discover everyday that the list of tasks to do is increasing in number, needs for help and volunteers and that it will take a lot of energy to have all the issues well mastered. And of course, not everything is depending on the work of the members of the organizing team. It depends also on help of the members of the list (= you!) and on the reactivity of the external actors that we have to work with if we want to succeed. Do not forget that one of the main features of the event is to have a world-wide dimension; even if we know that we shall not have participations from all parts of the world, we want to really place this event on an international basis. That alone requires distributing spreading tasks (translations, sending info to target organizations, contacts with local media, etc.) between volunteers and coordinating the coherence of these tasks... Publications of Press Release in various media supports must be synchronized with each publication or magazine editorial rhythm (often more than 5 weeks for monthly mags...). Without taking care of these constraints, we shall not be able to reach our goals : -have a large number of pinholers everywhere on Earth creating pinhole pictures on the same day and loading them on the official Pinhole Day site -display on a quality site all the pictures made on pinhole Day so that a very large number of visitors can discover and/or appreciate the Pinhole Day exhibit. It is why, taking in consideration all these elements , my preferences go to a distant date : 1st Sunday in June. Of course I may be wrong but I truly fear that choosing a closer date (April) does not allow to work in appropriate conditions and that it leads to a very unsatisfactory result. On the opposite side, I would rather not wait for the fall (being admitted that Summer months are not a good choice for reasons already discussed here) because I think It is too far and there is a risk that our enthusiasm will have difficulties to maintain at the top level we know at the present day! June seems realistic to me, even if we have still a lot of tasks to execute! In the Pinhole Polls at http://www.p at ???/discussion/polls.php (closing date : Sunday 24:00 GMT), you will notice that there are 2 equivalent choices offered : Sunday June 3rd and First Sunday of June(that is June 3rd in 2001). First Sunday of June could become a regular basis for next years Pinhole Days. If you have not yet expressed your vote, I wish these comments will help you to build up your choice. In all cases, it is a democratic mode of taking decisions and I shall respect the will of the majority which will express, my only concern being to contribute creating a true moment of pleasure for the largest number of persons (photo submitters + web-site visitors) Thanks for your patience reading my bad English Happy pinholing ! Re: [pinhole-discussion] Re: really big pinhole camera
In the small countryside village where I live in the East of France, there is an association defending selective sorting of litter and recycling. About one year ago, they organized a recuperation Saturday during which a large tent was set up on the village square and a lot of information about environmental protection was given to visitors. People of this association invited me to show how I could transform all kinds of boxes in cameras (they had already seen me wandering with old cake metal boxes, cardboard boxes etc).Among the very various pinhole cameras I showed was an old attaché-case with 2 pinholes which makes very nice pictures on 11x 17 paper. At the end of the afternoon I invited all present people to pose for a direct pinhole group picture on 20x24 paper And guess what was the camera ? I wanted to stay in the tune of the day (litter recycling...); so I transformed my own black plastic circular trash bin in a giant pinhole camera. Easy trick : piercing black plastic and installing inside a pinhole made in a steel foil. That made a very good camera, not too heavy, very stable on the ground, easy to carry (2 handles), very practical to load/unload ( the top lid is really lightproof without need of black tape ).; Of course, I get strangely distorted pictures since not only the piece of paper is curved because of the round shape but the distance to the pinhole is not the same in the height axis (because the plastic trash bin is not cylindrical but a section of a cone -narrower at the bottom than at the top-). The pose for the group picture (about 40 people) vas 40 minutes!! Not everybody was patient enough to stay in place but some did and for everyone present, it has been a unique experience of being photographed by a trash bin... Ah... What are we going to invent for pinhole's sake ?? Let's go on pinholing, Cheers from France, Jean --- From: Guy Glorieux guy.glori...@sympatico.ca To: pinhole-discussion@p at ??? I could barely see my hands and feet as I walked to the scene I was about to shoot for that winning picture for the First International Nocturne Pinhole Exhibition. Ten times before leaving I had checked that my film holders were fully loaded with film. A single word kept swirling in my mind:r e c i p r o c i t y I must not fail, I must not fail, I kept repeting to myself in the darkness of the darkest forest. Formulas kept poping up in my mind: 10% compound; one-over-the square-root of the inverse of the sunny-16 times three times the speed of my film; add twice the diameter of my pinhole divided by the focal length of my camera to the exposure time estimated for the 3rd f-stop on my right and multiply the cosinus by the coefficient of uncertainty... I knew I could do it. How could I fail with all this simple mathematics so well spelled out on The list. Something tryied to grab me in the dark. I gave it a sharp blow and the thing went blonk. Nothing could stop me from winning the top prize of the Nocturne Pinhole Exhibition at Pinhole Vision. Finally I reached the scene. It was a wonderful landscape I had spotted two days ago after hours of walk in the country side. I set the camera on the tripod. The temperature was a chilling 25 below freezing but I was well covered for a long wait. With my flashlight, I carefully read the spotmeter's reading and worked out the reciprocity factor on my PDA. 258 hours, 64 minutes and 12 seconds... Hmmm... Add a couple hours, just to make sure... It was just that simple! I knew I could do it. But, rats, I suddenly realized that the final deadline for submitting the print was tomorrow with an exposure time of well over 10 days. I personnaly think that, if we are going to repeat swaps on a regular basis (i.e. 2 or 3 by year) it would be better to define a subject, which gives some coherence ; of course, this subject has to be broad enough to respect every swapper's freedom and also to obtain a collection showing the diversity of ways to express a subject by pinhole pictures ! - 2 - The other comment is maybe more personal and is about the number of prints : I must say that 1 only picture has been for me frustrating; I mean that I had difficulties to choose a single picture to send to the swappers. The prints I sent were always belonging to series and I felt frustrated to reduce my work to a one picture only ! I was not alone in this case since I noticed that some of the swappers did not send the same pictures to all swappers, which mean they did not want to make a single selection ! Of course this depends on the way everybody works and I would not allow myself to express any judgment; I only know that, for myself, pinhole pictures always belong to a kind of continuous work since for me pinhole photography is a slow process used to keep traces and to express duration and depht of vision upon apparences. It's why a single picture has just a little meaning for me. Is it possible to imagine a Print swap in which we would send a small serie of 3 pictures for example ? It is just a question about which I would like everybody to express; of course I am perfectly aware of the difficulties arised by such a proposition : a lot of time and of course the economical cost of 3 prints instead of 1 ( I am very sensible to these problems since I go on with traditional FB paper darkroom work, which is time consuming and costly). I just wanted to express my frustration about the 1- picture swaps. All comments are welcome since I cannot make a clear opinion about that ... So, I am ready to sign for the next print swap and you can count on my participation. If I had been the first to express the intention of launching a new swap,I would probably have suggested a subject as self- portrait (I presume nearly each of us photographers keep a trace of ourselves from time to time on our pictures). self portraiture seems to be a not-too-narrow subject since there are so many ways to be present in a picture. Rain drives my PC crazy (was :Re: [pinhole-discussion] Newcomer)...

It did not prevent me from going outside on my mountain bike with several hand-made cameras : what I like in bad weather is the opportunity to work with very long exposures... (...) I begin to believe that my Text software is a pinhole text software, bringing us a vision upon words as strange and impredictable than the new reality of the world offerred to us pinholers by our funny black holes cameras. Re: [pinhole-discussion] mail is broken, list is broken, testing
Hello Gregg ! It's OK now and I can read your posts... Thanks for all your efforts and work to make this high quality list work so efficiently ! And I grab this opportunity to thank all contributors to the pinhole list for the richness of the discussions and the exquisite high level of respect for each other's point of view. I'm sure this intellectual and humanquality has something to do with our very peculiar way to see/view the world through the uncertainty of our strange so modest (and essential !) cameras and their tiny pinholes... Let's go pinholing Cheers from France Jean Jean Daubas, auteur - photographe Rue de Bourg-Sec 25440 LIESLEFrance 03 81 57 50 13 - Original Message - From: Gregg Kemp gregg.kemp@p at ???
