Re: [expert] installed XFree 4.1 from cooker- now no DRI (mga)

2001-06-16 Thread Bill Thompson

I went throught the following drill last week and was successful. Get
http://azz.us-lot.org/kernel-drm-4.1.0.tar.gz and compile using:

make linux (or something like that)

The resulting .o files replace those in
/lib/modules/2.4.5-3mdk/kernel/drivers/char/drm.
Note the i810 module does not get created. You might wish to backup the
existing
drm files. Copy over the new ones and gzip them.

For a little extra humpf for the G400, add Option 2 to
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
And it wouldn't hurt to replace DefaultColorDepth with DefaultDepth.
Reboot and
you should be in business.

The problem is, I no longer have DRI enabled. I think it is because the

[expert] X uses LOTS of memory

2001-06-16 Thread Brian Schroeder

I am using LM7.2 with an nVidia TNT Riva 32M graphics card. Using top, I
noticed that the X process was using about 45% of the memory -
56M out of a total of 128M. Why should X use so much memory?

I have since installed the nVidia drivers (which worked first time!),
but now see X using 145% of the memory: 191M!. Hence, swap is very
much in use.

Can anyone tell me what is happening here and what I can do about it?

[expert] PPP - throughput dies

2001-06-16 Thread Brian Schroeder

Running LM7.2, I use kppp. When connected, I keep the kppp Statistics
window up all the time to watch what is happening. I
have found that I rarely get a continuous flow of data, except for
some times when I may have 6 or so wgets running at the same time.
I realise that transient conditions do affect things considerably,
but the up-and-down nature of the traffic graph - including periods
of no throughput - seems a bit much.

I have also noticed that when the local CPU is doing work of any
significance, throughput dies. I wouldn't have thought it should
have any major effect on PPP traffic. Sometimes, it gets to the
point when no high-level protocol will move any data at all unless
I reset my modem and re-dial - re-establishing the ppp link. Things
like DNS lookups, and ntp work, but HTTP, NNTP, and FTP seize up
completely.

I have examined everything I can find, including all log files I can
find, but cannot find anything to tell me what is happening.

Is this normal? Or, what should I be looking for?

And so forth. Many such files in /etc. There are also a number of these in
my home directory and in /lib/modules/2.4.3-10mdk (plus a few others).

Again, I did not do anything to alter the perms on these files, they are the
default that went with Mandrake 8.0 and medium security install. I would
like to tighten things up without overly hindering user abilities to do
anything useful on the system (high security setting is terribly hindering
for anything like playing games, connecting to the internet, etc). I am
somewhat fearful of simply changing the perms on these files en masse because
I recently tried this on my home directory as well as in the /tmp directory
and it totally wrecked my system. It took me days to get things straightened
out and working again. What permissions SHOULD I have on files in my $HOME
directory and in /etc and /lib/modules to eliminate them from loading up my
root mailbox? They must be perms that don't kill usefulness of the system by
users and I don't want to wreck my system as I did before.

Any suggestions?

[expert] lm-sensors install/use problems

2001-06-16 Thread David E. Fox

Hi *,

I've been fiddling with lm-sensors 2.5.5 recently to try to get it to
work. I'm using Mandrake 7.2. I was using version 2.4.2 which does have
better support for sensors devices, and patched up to 2.4.5 (but that
didn't work - I got a 'ran out of input data, system halted' message, so
back to the Mandrake kernel 2.2.17-mdk).

I've rebuilt lm-sensors and installed it, but at present it can't
access the proc file - permissions don't seem to matter, as I've run
the sensors binary as root. I've put in the suggested lines in rc.local and
in /etc/modules.conf that the sensors-detect program suggested. When
I run 'sensors' I get one line output, can't read /proc file.

I've an ASUS A7V133 mainboard, and the sensors-detect program suggested
I use a via686a module, yet when I modprobe it, it says it can't be found.
I then look in /lib/modules/2.2.17-mdk/misc, sure enough it isn't there. I
peek in the chips directory, there is a via686a module but I can't bring the
module in, I get a lot of unresolved symbols. I've made sure to run 'depmod
-a'.

Any suggestions? I was hoping to upgrade to kernel 2.4.5, but in looking into
the kernel config file I don't see anything that exactly matches the probe
that my mainboard uses.

Without internal IOS info (Cisco proprietary), there's not much chance... even
within Cisco, only the development folk and some support personnel can even
compile the code.

After this, i brought back the last acer and took an yamaha 2100 SCSI.

I am running Mandrake 8, with fvwm2 as a window manager and no Gnome or KDE.

harddrake shows a line for joysticks, but if I click on it nothing happens.
probing options lists no configuration tool for joysticks.

rpmdrake lists no packages that contain the string joy.

xf86cfg doesn't seem to anything useful that I can figure out (like put a
joystick section in my XF86Config-4).

I can try modprobe analog or turn on my Sidewinder and try modprobe
sidewinder. This doesn't give an error message, but doesn't do anything
useful that I can see, either.

What can I do to get a working joystick?

I did as you suggested: I instaled the lm_utils rpm and there is little
difference. The one main difference is if I load the sensors.o modules
I get a different line of output from sensors: 'no sensors found' rather
than 'cannot read /proc file'. This seems significant. From 'modules-dep'
it would seem that sensors.o is dependent on via686a.o - but where is the

managed to mount a tape as a filesystem. I doesn't work like Windows

You use tar/cpio/dump to backup/ restore you filesytem to/from the tape.

If you want to backup different machines with only one tape, export
what you need to backup on each machine, and mount every exported
filesystems/directories on the server...

Or use the machine with the tape as a backup server: it will export
some directories. On each machine, mount one from the backup server,
copy the data you need to backup to the backup server exported filesystem.
Finally, run a backup on the backup server.

But how do I get Linux to boot once I delete the MBR??? (on the other
 machine i have)

On the Windows machine, where you did fdisk /mbr? You might try loadlin, or
you might go the easy way, and use a boot loader like GRUB or maybe even
LILO.

or Linux? OR, how would I ADD GRUB to a drive whose MBR was trashed, or
whose GRUB didn't exist in the first place? And can I access GRUB

While installing Mandrake, you can chose to install GRUB. Or you might boot
your system with the mandrake cd and do a rescue from there.

 configuration from DOS?

Not that I know.

I have since installed the nVidia drivers (which worked first time!),
but now see X using 145% of the memory: 191M!. Hence, swap is very
 much in use.

Is swap really in use? Here at home (same config as yours), it's not. It's
rather that top reports the memory wrong, as it also counts the 32+ MB on
your nVidia card that X uses and thus doesn't count correctly.

IOW: Nothing to worry about.

ReiserFS. But I did no repartitioning, just changed the FS from
Ext2. 1. The harddrive is very slow, compared to before. A
rough estimate is 3-5 times slower when reading from disk. This
is also true on fairly small files, which I expected to benefit
from using ReiserFS. 2. Using hdparm on the drive has no
perceptible change whatsoever. I have fiddled with all the ususal

effect. Doesn't hdparm work with Reiserfs? 3. The size
of one of the partitions is incorrectly estimated by df. df says

someone help me shed some light on these issues?
TIA Jesper p.s. Here follows my /etc/fstab, if
useful: /dev/hda8 / reiserfs defaults 1 1 /dev/hda5

user,exec,umask=0,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /proc proc
defaults 0 0 /dev/hda7 swap swap defaults 0 0
Well, this is what I've done:

Installed MD 7.2 with Reiser (with my motherboaard,
Soltek SL-75DRV, the MD 8.0
with ext2 the
XWindows simply don't start after install).
With 7.2 everything works really fine.
Upgrate to 8.0 and use old kernel.
Here you have MD 8.0, Reiser, and
UDMA.

(cdrecord do not work with old
kernels)

Looks like a streaming problem. Is the IDE channel on DMA?

hdparm /dev/hdc(or whatever place your device is plugged in)

Should tell you. If you are not getting DMA, you cannot write a
CD, most times.

[expert] Wrong email address for self

2001-06-16 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

For whatever it's worth: A member of the KDE list has just pointed out to me
that the return address in Kmail, my default email program, for the past
several weeks has been wrong. I did a fresh install of LM 8.0 about three
weeks ago and during the process I had inadvertently entered
[EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you for your understanding.

munehiro:

I see that you have an nVida GeForce video. My question, are you running
your X-Windows system at a DefaultDepth 16 and DRI? The reason for
my question: I have a Maxtor G400 and when my Xf86Config-4 Section
Screen was set for a DefaultDepth 16, which enabled the DRI my
system would fault with the same errors as you are having. The ONLY way
I could correct this was to change the DefaultDepth to 24 which disabled
DRI for my card and system. After doing this my system now burns cd
just fine. Don't know if this is you problem, but worth a try.
