[lace] Re: Arachne gathering at IOLI convention

2023-05-10 Thread Janice Blair
Thanks Ruth for the heads up about the schedule having a time for Arachne
meeting at 6:30 for an hour, I hadn't noticed it.  This year I did not
contact the host group but maybe one of the members is a member of Arachne, so
we should plan on meeting there and if anyone wants to arrange a lunch
gathering, they can do it there.
Yes, if you have anything spidery, lacy or useful you would like to donate to
our annual free raffle please bring it. I usually have a stash of things in my
lace drawer that I bring. Put in on your phone calendar for Tuesday at 6:30

over the age of 8 and novices, from the pre-convention Introduction to Bobbin
Lace class, into the Scheeberger  class.  I didn’t know this when I signed
up for the class.  I’ve taken this class with Sylvie before so I’m not
newbie.  I’m sure Sylvie will teach me more, too.  Teaching children
bobbin lace is wonderful idea.

I was glad to see that the convention schedule includes an Arachne meeting!
Janice, shall we bring our wrapped gifts for the gift exchange again??

[lace] Needlelace Gnome Ornament

There are two photos now on the Arachne Flickr as requested. One, a closeup of
the gnome ornament and the other has some bobbin lace snowflakes from Jana

[lace] Lace Advent Calendar

2023-01-05 Thread Janice Blair
Thanks to Jean for another a great lace advent calendar. I gave up trying to
figure them out as there were so many point ground laces that I was sure I got
some wrong.
I missed doing the ornament exchange last Christmas. I have been doing the
exchange ever since it began and loved trying to come up with a new idea for
an ornament.
This year, as in many past years, I have given a hand made lace ornament to my
yarn group. We make blankets, hats, etc., for seven local charities and I have
given them lace for at least the last five years. This time I made a
needlelace gnome head similar to those we see all over the States. It was a
simple tall red triangle of corded Brussels stitch, all done in DMC 8,
outlined with a thick cordonette, then I added a white yarn beard and a pink
bead for the nose. I wrote out the instructions and took photos as I did it
and the local Silvergate lace guild had a lesson in November making them.We
had two finished gnomes before I had to head home. I must have made at least
22 of the gnomes as I sold 7 of them at our fund raising craft fair. Those
members that purchased a gnome got a bobbin lace snowflake instead. They were
cute and popular and easy to make in front of the telly.
Did you do anything special in lace for Christmas 2022?Janice

[lace] lace] Bolster pillow Bobbin management

2022-10-15 Thread Janice Blair
Susan,I have not used a bolster pillow but many of my friends do. What they
made was a strip of ribbon with large pearl beads sewn on, or a crochet strip,
similar to what some use to hold bobbins when packing up the pillow, but at
regular close intervals they attached a large round bead. The strips go around
the outer edges of the bolster and as you work through the bobbins, the used
ones are placed behind the beads out of the way. It is easy to lift them back
up when you need them again. Wish I had a photo to show you, hard to explain
in words. Looks pretty on the pillow.
I have also seen wire that is coiled, similar to the old telephone cords we
used to have on the kitchen wall phone, and fastened around the sides of the
bolster and you place the thread leads over a coil. Love the Christmas
ornament.Janice

[lace] IOLI Convention 2022

2022-07-23 Thread Janice Blair
We finally had an in person meeting. There were seven of us who got together
and had a good chat. It was lovely to see people who I had not seen for many
years, including Penny Boston and Nancy Neff. I managed to recognise both even
though we were wearing our masks. Rosemary Horr couldn't join us as she was
manning the display room but she did send a pair of bone Midlands bobbins for
our raffle. Hopefully next year we will have a larger group in Reno, Nevada.

[lace] IOLI Convention Get Together

2022-06-27 Thread Janice Blair
I have arranged with Jean Doig, local convention organiser, that we can have
our get together on Wednesday meeting directly after the lace talk at 8:00 pm.
All those types of events are taking place in the Atrium so we can just find a
corner afterwards where we can meet up. If you want to participate in our free
raffle, please bring a small item with you.Wear your Arachne pin or something
similar if you have it. Looking forward to an in person convention, all be it
with masks. There may be about ten people or more.Janice

Like Susie I use the car garages. I have five of them. One is for white cotton
threads on one side and linen on the other side.  They hold lots of spools.
Another is just for silk threads, different makes on each side. One for
metallic and specialty threads. One for colored cotton threads and the last
one holds a mixture of sewing threads.  I also have two large square wicker
baskets that sit on the bottom ledge of my bookcase that hold other threads
that won't fit into those boxes and my boxes of pins, the second holds my
bobbins.  I love being able to see the colored threads like a pallet for my

[lace] House of Mercy, NY

2020-08-22 Thread Janice Blair
I have just finished reading a new book called The Girls with No Name by
Serena Burdick. The novel is based on some facts about the House of Mercy, in
New York that was run by Catholic nuns for "fallen women".  I had heard of
the Catholic laundries in Ireland where women worked basically as slaves which
came to light a number of years ago and they were held responsible for it.
According to the Afterwword, that never happened in America so I was
ignorant that the same thing had happened  over here.  Usually I don't
bother to read the Afterword at the end of a novel but came across a paragraph
that I thought was interesting.
Quote: These socially acceptable establishments imprisoned, abused and
enslaves women and children while the church made millions from their laundry
service and lace making.
There was no mention of lace making in the novel and I wonder if that happened
at the House of Mercy and Inwood House, also in NY.  Maybe some of our local
lacemakers in NY have heard about that aspect of it. I almost cried at the end
of the book, and I don't get emotional.

[lace] Christmas lace

Happy Christmas everyone.  I actually placed a few pins in my lace today,

I don't think I wrote to thank Maria Greil for her beautiful card which had a

[lace] Arachne photo

2019-07-30 Thread Janice Blair
As I get the digest version, I have not had one since last Friday so don't
know if there are any posts about convention. The Arachne get together was a
great success, held in the restaurant of the hotel, but in a quiet raised area
away from most other guests. Sue Babbs has put a photo on the Flicker photo
stream for me. I am sorry I did not lighten it up a little more. Annie who
takes photos for the IOLI CD may have a better photo than the one taken with
my phone. We got a chance to introduce ourselves and the raffle had so many
prizes that some folks got to take home two prizes.
My convention was really nice. I took Mechlin with Ulrike Voelker which was
enjoyable even though my pillow was the one to take a tumble in the class. We
were in a bedroom (less beds) but with some furniture still there and I think
it was 11 or 12 of us, all with large pillows. Mine was the 24" builder foam
type with square corners that got in the way of people passing where I was
originally sat. I turned myself around, side on to another lacemaker. She
accidentally placed a hand on the corner of my pillow and over it went. Pins
everywhere and a tangle of bobbins, (probably 80 pairs by then) thankfully no
broken threads.  As it was time to organize the Arachne lunch, I left.  When
I came back all the pins were back in my container on the pillow and some of
the bobbins sorted. Ulrike took over sorting them when she returned from lunch
and as my pattern had some lace worked from a different direction, I got on
with that. On my comment form for IOLI I wrote that I had never laughed so
much. Obviously by Friday I had forgotten the incident. My other class on
Wednesday was designing Binche, a taster. Kumiko helped me get my project half
done so I am well on the way to my first Binche design.
On a personal note, I took first prize in the contest for my grape design,
which cannot be shown until published in the Bulletin. Liz Ligetti from
Australia got second for her tatted tussie mussy flowers and Janet Peers won
third for her needlelace copy of The Sower by Van Goch. She also won Popular
Vote and I voted for her piece. In my opinion it should have won First. It was
a fun convention and the hotel and staff were great and the meals provided
were good, as were all the favors we received. The banquet gift from the host
group was a hand thrown pin dish. I love mine as it was the colors used in my
bedroom and lounge.  I also sat at the banquet table where another surprise
was a pair of Binche bobbins donated by the Lace Museum.  I came home a happy
lacemaker and now have a ton of work to do on my lace.

[lace] IOLI Arachne Get Together Update

2019-07-09 Thread Janice Blair
I received another email yesterday about the lunch area.  I hope everyone
will be okay with having to purchase lunch in the area for Tuesday. Hopefully
the hotel to go boxes will be a reasonable cost.  I believe the classes will
be staggered again so I am hoping anyone in the early classes can make their
way to the area and reserve us 3 or 4 tables together.Janice

[lace] IOLI Convention Arachne Get together lunch

2019-07-08 Thread Janice Blair
I have heard from the hotel that we can hold our luncheon Tuesday, here is an
excerpt from the email:
"We have decide to put your “informal” lunch get together in our Max
Lounge, the number of the area will be what we call the 600’s (it is a
raised area where we have our entertainers perform from on the weekends, this
is not a private area but at least area at the end or our Lounge area."

The hotel are organising box lunches or some sort of quick pick lunches that
we can pick up and take to the area once we get out of class. Hopefully the
area will not be too noisy and we can do our usual introductions and raffle.
I also asked for trash cans so we can clean up after ourselves. Looking
forward to seeing you all soon.

How do you store your lace books? Is it alphabetical by author or by
alphabetical by type.  Mine is by type of lace but certain authors like
Ulrike have a section for their books which cover many laces.

I did not get the original post from Sue. Maybe that is why I thought Lace

Weather wise, here in southern California the summer has finally arrived with
temperatures in the 80's so it is very pleasant.  No sign of rain in the near
future.  I have been enjoying the water aerobics at the clubhouse pool and am
looking forward to the barbecue and dance on Thursday, July 4th, in the pool
area.  We had fireworks last Saturday for the Murrieta birthday bash but
there won't be any on Thursday.  Have to watch them on the tv.
Life seems so busy these days I wonder how I managed to fit everything in when
I worked.  It has been the San Diego County Fair for the last month, finishes
on Thursday.  My lace guild demonstrates every day the fair was open so it
gives us an opportunity to try the many types of fried food on our luck break.
As the prices are ridiculously high, I didn't bother trying the deep fried
creme brûlée or the deep fried pizza!!
What have you all been doing now that summer is here, besides making lots of
lace.  I got a start on my Christmas presents while being on our stand at the
home and hobby building.Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, jblace.com

[lace] Split into lace-chat and arachne get together

2019-05-07 Thread Janice Blair
I think I joined in 1996 as I see Diane joined in 1995 and she introduced
Arachne to me.
I get the digest version of Lace and it has been very quiet and the last
digest was very short. I thought a digest was generated when it reached a
certain number of characters sent in by individual emails, but maybe it is
also set to send one after a week or two if the characters are not enough to
generate one.
Is Lace Chat still active?  I get that email as a reflected post but can't
remember when I last had an email. I think most people are finding their
information on the various Facebook groups or Pinterest and Youtube.
Do we have any members of Arachne who are helping host the 2019 IOLI
convention in Spokane who can find us a place for our get together.  I am
well out of the loop since I have been off the IOLI convention committee for a
number of years.  Please let us know if you are a Washington State Arachne
member with any knowledge of the hotel or are willing to find out where we can
meet this summer. Thanks.Janice

[lace] What is the best way to start bobbin lace?

2019-01-20 Thread Janice Blair
I taught myself from the Doris Southard book until I found a group about 40
miles away. From there, I found suppliers. This was before I used the Internet
much. Found Arachne which helped.  Nowadays I am on Bobbin Lace Makers on
Facebook and try to help with suggestions for people new to lace.  If they
are in the US, I look in the IOLI handbook to see if I can spot a lacemaker in
their city and if so, suggest they go to the IOLI website to contact the area
rep. I also encourage them too join so they can borrow books and videos just
for postage costs. It is wonderful to see so many new lacemakers online and is
a useful reply to the "Dying Art" response when demonstrating.  That drives
me nuts, especially if we are working with children.

[lace] Lace Digest

2018-11-23 Thread Janice Blair
The last Lace Digest I received was dated November 7. Is the list just quiet
because of the holiday here in the US, or are you all busy working on your
lace.  I have just completed 12 stars in rings for my knitting group. Last
year I made them my cat bookmark which they liked. I hope they like this
ornament. It is an old design off my website that I have tidied up and put in
silver rings.
I also haven't written to Lyn Hudren to let her know that her card and
enclosures arrived earlier this month. Sorry about that Lyn, but I have been
very busy, including having had cataracts in both eyes removed. It seems
strange to be able to see without glasses which I have worn for about 35
years.  My exchange cards went in the mail the other week.
I have been working on a competition piece for the Winter Lace Conference next
February in Costa Mesa, California.  I am looking forward to the conference
as I missed the Freeway Lace Guild Lace Day and my September and October
meetings at Silvergate Lacemakers in Rancho Sante Fe.  It seems ages since I
saw my lace friends. The meeting next week at Silvergate will be a Christmas
pot luck lunch and a gift exchange.  Last year there were lots of hedgehogs
in the exchange in all shapes and forms. I wonder what we will see this year.
Hope all my American friends had a good thanksgiving with loved ones.  We
spent it at a friends home along with 5 your Marines from Camp Pendleton where
they are doing basic training, and another 20 other neighbors.  Even brought
home leftovers which we had for dinner today.
Here's hoping this email is enough to generate a Digest.

[lace] List quiet?

2018-10-31 Thread Janice Blair
It is 6 days since I received a digest.  Is everyone busy making lace?  I
have been making lace ornaments for my knitting group for a Christmas gift.
Six done, 6 more to go.  My Arachne exchanges are ready, just need to work
out how I am going to mount them this year.
Saturday we have a craft fair and my knitting group are having a stall.  I
have at least a dozen pairs of bobbin lace and tatted earrings to sell.  The
money goes into our kitty for purchasing new yarn for the items we make for
seven local charities, and the occasional birthday cake.
I received my Lace 172 magazine this week and there are lots of articles and
patterns for poppies.  I was delighted to see a photo of a poppy from our
Susan Hottle of a poppy she adapted from the beginner pattern on my website.
Still time to make one for Remembrance Day.

[lace] IOLI Bulletin and Google Account

2018-07-17 Thread Janice Blair
I got my paper version of the Bulletin at the weekend. After some nagging from
my daughter, I finally decided to open a Google account if I could. Lin, your
suggestion of having a separate gmail account for Bulletin access only would
not work as the new email would be shown in the Handbook , and not the one I
prefer to use. Anyway, I just tried to create a Google account to find that my
jblace email is already in there. How did that happen, guess I must have done
it years ago and totally forgot about it. I did change my password as
suggested by Google. Now I am set up for the next Bulletin online. I presume
I will receive an email with a link to the Bulletin when the time comes. I
still want the paper version though. I might be back with questions if I can't
access it.

Sue, No, I doubt that the IOLI will make the handbook available online, even
though it would only be accessible by those signed up for the Bulletin. If it
can be downloaded, then it could be shared!

Devon,
This made me chuckle in the last digest, how many hands do you have. I had
visions of a lacemaker with three or more hands. That would be helpful at
times.

[lace] IOLI Bulletin

2018-07-10 Thread Janice Blair
As the list seems to be quiet, my last digest was #68 on July 1, and I know I
sent a lengthy email about convention hoping it might kick out a new digest, I
decided to write about the IOLI increasing the dues to cover mailing and
printing costs of the magazine and the new digital version at lower cost.

I, and all IOLI members with an email address, should have received an email
from Prabha Ramakrishnan, the editor recently. Apart from increasing dues,
they are making an online version of the Bulletin available at a lower cost or,
if paying the full membership dues, you can get both versions. I was able to
access the online one in the link from Prabha, but if I decided to go the
digital route, I would need to have access through a Google account. I don't
have a gmail email, so I am not sure how I would do that. What is a Google
Account? I don't want a new email address and the FAQ's say I don't need to do
that, but how would I access it? Checking out the magazine online, I think I
have decided to pay the full amount when I renew in September as I prefer to
have the paper version that I can flip through, leave at the side of my chair
so I can pick it up whenever I want to check something. I don't like the fact
that I can't read the screen if I am looking at the full pag!
e of the magazine, and on my laptop I need to zoom in to read the details, and
then I have to move the screen up and down. Not for me, too lazy.

Can anyone answer my question on a Google Account, and what do others think of
this new version?

[lace] IOLI Convention

2018-07-08 Thread Janice Blair
Well, it is almost here. I spent the afternoon gathering my bobbins and threads
from my stash for my classes at the IOLI convention in San Antonio, Texas.
Taking Hinajosa, Amelia Ars and the Idjria jewelry class on Wednesday. What
are you taking?

Unfortunately I have not heard back from the local co-hosts regarding a space
for our Arachne get together, unlike last year when it was all arranged for us
(thank you). The hotel has a lunch buffet arranged, but I don't know if we
might be able to sit together. If anyone arrives before Saturday and has time
to look around, maybe they can spot a place for us to gather. If not lunch,
maybe we can hang around after the dinner on Monday as we will have had time to
hit the sales rooms earlier. It could be announced at the opening reception or
the Monday dinner. I'm bringing some items for our free raffle just in case we
do meet.

I will be bringing a couple of items for the display room but will not be
entering the competition this year. I am sure there will be lots of entries
though. I already have made 3 fans and don't need any more.

I had the whole month of May showing my lace pieces in the lobby of the
clubhouse of our subdivision, changing the display once during in the month. It
was well received and I got many compliments from people who have never seen
hand made lace before. On International Lacemaking day I sat in the atrium
during the afternoon and had lots of interest.

[lace] 2018 Arachne Motif Exchange - ideas

2018-06-05 Thread Janice Blair
Jeri,Your trees sound delightful but I don't think I have ever seen what you
are describing. Small fir trees look out of place the rest of the year,
although my son has been known to keep his large tree up year round and
decorates it for the various holidays, including Halloween, when it sports
skulls, spiders, etc.  How about posting a photo or two of your trees when
decorated and put it on Flicker for us all to see.  Why pack them away for
summer, I could see lace shells shapes or even flip flops in lace hanging on
them.
Lace last weekend was teaching "Make & Take lace fish" at the San Diego County
Fair. In the three hours allotted to us, Linda Knott and I managed teaching
ten lace fishes, sometimes instructing two people at a time. Hard work, but
fun when we were busy.  Our craft station was at the end of the hobby
building and people only made their way down there when we had someone working
on a fish.  I got very little done on my own lace as I was busy rewinding
bobbins for the next rush.Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, jblace.com

[lace] Lace projects

2018-05-28 Thread Janice Blair
Hi Sue,
I was reading your long email about your trials and tribulations and how you
were in the doldrums of lace making that some of us fall into at different
times. I was sorry to hear of your losses in the family and send you my
condolences, and Ihope your nephew recovers successfully from his operation. I
was also touched that seeing my poppy design helped you get your mojo back.

At the present I am making a six pointed Russian star for a Jewish friend who
wants a lace donation for a charity event she is helping plan. I started it on
Sunday, and not having the correct linen thread, I started making it using DMC
Cordonnet 20. It filled the spaces but looks so heavy that this afternoon I
undid the two points of the star to start again. This time I am going to use
DMC 50, but put in more passives to fill the spaces. I have made this pattern
before, probably 20 years ago, and had it mounted between two circular pieces
of glass with a simple stained glass red border. I used thin thread, as I
probably had no idea how thick Linen 30/3 was back then. It has sat in the
window of two homes, each time in full sunlight, and it has not come to any
harm yet. It will probably outlast me. I remember that the lady who mounted
the lace in the glass delivered it to my home rather than trusting the mail,
and I was working on a simple Schneeberger cat designed by !
Lia Baumiester. She was enthralled with it and asked me how much I would
charge to make some for her. I enquired of lace friends and they said $25,
which is what she charged for the glass piece. Needless to say she never
ordered any. :-) At the time, she was mounting those "handmade" Chinese
doilies in her glass pieces which she probably got for $3 each.

This Saturday my guild start demonstrating at the San Diego County Fair where
we were asked to teach fair goers how to make lace. We chose a very simple
fish design and the thread will be hung onto large plastic paperclips. Can't
use brooch pins in case the little dears prick themselves. The organizers
wanted us to do 100 fish per three hour session!! Obviously they have never
seen bobbin lace being made. That has been revised to 20 fish, but we will see
how it goes. Any bets on how many get made on Saturday. There will only be
two of us doing the teaching, and getting the pillows ready for the next
students. We will have a have a go snake on a pillow for those who only want
to try a row or two.

Thanks Devon and Elena for the explanation of the fashion trend from Japan.
The shape reminds me of the dresses I used to wear in the 1950's with the

The fashion does give the opportunity to add lace to everything.

[lace] Arachne Anniversary

2018-04-13 Thread Janice Blair
I joined Arachne in late 1995 and made lots of friends throughout the world.
I even visited their homes in Canada, Denmark, New Zealand and the UK.  It
is nice to put faces to names and is something we always do at our Arachne get
togethers at the IOLI convention.  I believe the first one was in Maryland
where I met Tamara.  We organized it in a local restaurant and I think we had
12 or 13 present. Restaurants are too small for us now and too hard to find in
another part of the country. Now we have had more than 30 attendees some years
and as we have a free raffle where people bring whatever they want to share,
we quite often have enough prizes for everyone to take a reminder home.
I have not heard from any local Arachne for the San Antonio get together. Has
anyone else got news for us about a meeting time and place?
I love the information that we can share and have taken part in the Christmas
Exchange for many years, trying to come up with a new pattern each year.

[lace] Magnifiers

2018-03-28 Thread Janice Blair
Sue,
The ones I use are K1C2 Magni-Clips Magnifiers 2.50 Magnification and can be
found on Amazon.

I like them because I can look over them or flip them up when not needed. Also
you can move them away from your glasses to get the focus just right for you.
I have several pairs of different magnification sizes.

[lace] Needle Lace Revival

Carolyn had a full class at the Winter Lace Conference in Costa Mesa, CA in
February and she is one of the teachers at the IOLI convention in San Antonio
in July. Her classes are listed on the IOLI website. Please consider signing
up for needlelace if there is space available. I have been disappointed in the
past when a needlelace class is cancelled because it needed a few more
students, and I signed up again so I hope the class is successful. The
advantage of needlelace is that transportation of equipment is easy, unlike
flying with lace pillows these days. Poor eyesight is not a handicap these days
as I have magnifier glasses that clip onto my regular glasses to help me to see
what I am doing. Come and join the fun.

[lace] Lace Revival of the 1970s

2018-03-26 Thread Janice Blair
I remember attending a Towns Womens Guild in November 1970 in Lichfield, Staffs
where we had a talk on bobbin lace with a demonstration on a board using
probably, skipping ropes with wooden handles for the thread and bobbins. I was
one of those who thought it looked too difficult and being heavily pregnant
with our son, had no time for a new hobby, plus I was doing wood carving at the
evening school at the time. I think the idea stayed in my brain until I
visited the UK in 1994 and saw a pillow kit in a craft shop. So there must
have been a local guild in the Lichfield area.

find information. I am probably addicted to Pinterest for none lace searches,
especially recipes. I also have a lace board where I put things of interest in

2018-03-05 Thread Janice Blair
David,We love the Sante Fe area and did think of retiring to that area but
when we went house hunting in January, we were caught in a snow storm and for
a while it was a bit hairy. We couldn't see the trail we were driving on.
But as our realtor said, if it snows in the morning it is gone by lunch.
That was the case, and it was back to teeshirts instead of jackets.  We are
used to driving in snow as we lived in Illinois for over 25 years with bad
winters, hence the reason we moved to southern California.  Only had a
smattering of snow here, except on the mountains.
Sue is right, there are many things to see around Taos including native Indian
reservations, and when we were on a tour of the area years before, we visited
the church in Chimayo and also an Indian rug weaver who has rugs in the
Smithsonian in Washington DC.  Santa Fe downtown is small and pedestrian so
very pleasant to walk around.  There is also a church that was featured in a
John Wayne movie that has a circular staircase with an unusual history.  Lots
of artists live and work in Sante Fe because of the light but it can be a bit
expensive to live there.Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, jblace.com

exhibition at the National Gallery in Washington.  I spotted two paintings of
lacemakers, including his famous one, plus one I mistook for a lacemaker as

a letter.  If you are near Washington DC, you should try to get to the

includes other artists with similar

[lace] Smithsonian Ipswich lace pillow

2017-12-10 Thread Janice Blair
When checking out the link to the bolster pillow at the Smithsonian, it
reminded me of the Plum Pudding pattern in A Visual Introduction to Buckspoint
Lace by Geraldine Stott, which I think was the first lace book I ever
purchased back in 1994. I also think I got the last copy not the stand that
day.  On checking, I see that the Plum Pudding has a larger gimp circle with
a cloth stitch center block and more ground that the one on the bolster
pillow.
One thing I did notice though was that the Smithsonian lace had a
left footside whereas most English lace to my knowledge have a right hand
footside.  Maybe Karen can explain why the change of side if the lady who
produced the lace originally came from England.Janice Janice Blair Murrieta,

[lace] Christmas Lace

2017-12-07 Thread Janice Blair
Changing the subject to something more pleasant, what are you doing this
season in regards to "Holiday" lace.  Being politically correct there, but
"Holiday" covers all the celebrations.  Last night I posted my design on the
Bobbin Lace Makers Facebook page but if you do not subscribe to that one, you
can see the pattern on my website at http://www.jblace.com/  I made a
triptych piece of lace to go around a candle.  I had intended to make two of
them for my Arachne exchange but while making the first one I decided it was
way too much work, so I scaled down to separate designs from the triptych.
It is on the Patterns page. I found the ideal led silver candle which shows
all the lace, rather than the white one I was going to use.
Currently I am working on a collar from a French book which is similar to
working Binche, in that I have to count pairs on each section of cloth stitch
to make sure I have the correct numbers for the next area. The workers
exchange with passives. Giving me a hard time but I like a challenge.
Happy Holidays,Janice

[lace] Barcelona

2017-10-05 Thread Janice Blair
Just got back from a Mediterranean cruise which started with a few days in
Barcelona.  I had asked before on Arachne about lace in Barcelona and was
provided with two shops that may have had something to see.  Casa Felix on
Pl. Villa de Madrid, 4 had a couple of Bridget Cook books in Spanish which I
already had in English.  The guy there said that was all he had for bobbin
lace, it looked more like a fabric shop.  Merceria Santana, Avenida Portal
de L'Angel, 26, had some thread but that was all I could see. DH didn't seem
fazed by the bras and panties on sale when he went in with me.
I was unable to get to Arenys to see the museum as there was so much else to
see in Barcelona plus our visit was during the end of summer festival so there
was much more going on in the city than normal.  We enjoyed the evening
parades and demonstrations of local music and dancing.
Had a lovely time at Pisa, in Rome and at Pompeii.  So much to see, but no
lace, and as we were on organized tours we had no time to explore. I can check
off places that were on my bucket list. I was grateful the list was quiet
while I was away as I had so many personal emails to deal with.Janice

[lace] Voodoo Board

2017-09-14 Thread Janice Blair
I used an oblong piece about letter size 1" thick polystyrene from a packing
box for my voodoo board. I bound the edges with duct tape so that none of the
little beads would escape. I have been using it for years, first as a pricking
board and now to put my enlarged diagrams on for Binche. I use colored glass
headed pins to see where I am. It is especially useful at conventions or
classes where there is a break for lunch. It would take me ages to find where I
should be without the board. Great idea. Yes, it does slow you down but is
much better than wasting time trying to figure out your place to restart.

Got my Summer Bulletin today and there is a long and amusing article by Devon
about Frisado needle lace which I sat down and read, all eight and half pages
of it. I love everything Devon writes and as my next trip starts in Barcelona
in two weeks time, I hope I find the food easier to digest that she did.

I also hope that some arrangement can be made for the Christmas exchange to go
ahead as usual. Susan put it well. I am sure that Lin did not mean to take

arrangement. I will continue working on my exchange pieces and wait to see
what happens. Peace in Lacing.

[lace] Beginner Pattern

2017-09-07 Thread Janice Blair
I designed a beginner cat pattern which is on my website. I posted the link on
Facebook on Bobbin Lace Makers and it has been really appreciated, so I thought
I would share the link here.

Go to jblace.com It is in the Pattern Gallery.

We have had an influx of new lacemakers at Silvergate Lacers near San Diego
this summer and I thought it might be nice for them to introduce them to a half
stitch pattern with a whole stitch edging. I have so far made 8 and intend to
use them as bookmark gifts for my knitting group, 4 more to go. They usually
take me an evening to make but I am a fast lacemaker. I tried to use thread
that was available locally in the US.

Devon, I converted this email to plain text so it should arrive looking normal.

Thanks Susan for posting the list of teachers.  When were you given it?  I
did not see any lists for next year and thought it had been overlooked.  Now
to decide what I would like. Several of the classes I fancy are being offered
at Winter Lace in February in Costa Mesa, near LA. Unfortunately that is in
February, so after I need to send in my registration.  Hope I get my choice
at WL and can then make something a little more difficult at convention.
Thanks also for Arlene posting so many photos. I had not realized at the
banquet that the Uncle Sam was Ken Van Dieren, I thought it was someone's
husband helping out.  It was certainly a lively banquet this year.Janice

[lace] IOLI Convention

2017-07-24 Thread Janice Blair
In answer to Jeri's plea, I finally received the digest in which Arlene's and
Susan's reports arrived. Arlene is featured first, so Susan was second to get
her report in, and finally having some time after dealing with laundry and
putting away all my lace goodies, I am sending my report.

I want to thank Arlene for all she did for the Arachne lunch. She arranged for
the tables to be put together and had the Arachne name on stands on each group
of tables. She put out the photocopies of the book from the Arizona site, each
in a plastic file holder so they did not get spoilt by the food we placed on
top. Her raffle was very well organized and I say this, not because my name
was drawn early in the proceedings, but everyone went home with a prize. Liz
arrived just as we were packing up but she was able to go home with something
as well. It was great to see so many Arachne members at the lunch.

I took the morning Lier class and worked on it during the afternoon in my room.
The maid, who was from Haiti, liked to watch me work and although it was
difficult to understand her, she was familia with tambour work. One question I
have, does anyone know what type of starch should be used to stiffen a piece
that is going to be a pendant, and is there something suitable in the US? I
usually use strong hold perfume free hair spray but I don't think that will be
firm enough. Greet mentioned "dab" or "dip" but I haven't found anything by
those names in a search online. None of the vendors had starch to my knowledge.

I enjoyed the whole week and I think we were overwhelmed with goodies at the
meals. Those items that I will not keep will be passed on to my guild members.
The meals were all good and the entertainment at the banquet was very lively.
Being old, I was able to sing along with the band as I remember many of the
songs from when I was a girl from radio.

I was genuinely surprised to receive the first prize for the original design
for my small, simple needlelace necklace. There were many entries in the
competitions this year and I breathed a sigh of relief when the tatted necklace
I had admired all week turned out to win the Doris Southward award for
professional lacemakers. I thought that would win but had not noticed which
category it was in.

My room mate and I did our own tour on Wednesday to downtown Philadelphia. We
caught the bus outside the hotel and the drivers in both directions allowed us
to ride free as we are seniors even though we did not have a PA pass. We saw
the Liberty Bell close up, the house where the Declaration of Independence was
drafted by Thomas Jefferson and the house where Betsy Ross sewed the flag, and
a number of other sights. We ate lunch at Reading Market which was a great
place for people watching. Although it was hot, we walked in the shade of the
tall buildings and all the places we visited were air conditioned, so we
survived and had a good day.

Next year convention will be in San Antonio, Texas the last week of July. The
fan style invitation quotes it will be "hotter than a jalapeño". The following
year, 2019, will be in Walla Walla, Washington. That is just north of the
Oregon border in the eastern part of Washington state. Should be an interesting
journey getting there.

It does not take much learning to use the embroidery machines these days, just
a case of installing the file and threading the needle and away it goes. I
have a number of lace ornaments on my tree that I made with the machine, but
doing a search on Advanced Embroider for Bobbin Lace, I was surprised at how
they mimic bobbin lace rather than just being lacy embroidery.

[lace] Arachne Convention Get Together

Jane,
You are welcome to bring your husband along to the get together. Liz usually
brings her husband. Maybe we should ban them from the free raffle though and
make it for Arachne members only. :-)

Thanks to Avital, Annette and Corinne for the information about Burano. I will
pass it all on to my friend so she can plan ahead. This list is the best when
it comes to getting up to date information. I remember coming back with lots
of photos of the buildings on Burano and Murano, and when in the museum I was
lucky enough to enter the room at the far end where the lacemakers were
working on their needle lace. There was one person who spoke some English so
she was able to tell me what they were doing.  Now I have done some
needlelace myself, I can appreciate the time it took them to complete one
doily between them.I remember hearing Americans talking about the wonderful
lace on sale on the stalls, when in fact it was embroidery!! I did tell them
to go to the shop with the real stuff. Janice Blair Murrieta,

[lace] Thistle Thread and TV

2017-05-09 Thread Janice Blair
Jeri,I did read your email and looked at the Thistle Threads blog. I will go
back for a deeper look again.
I also saw the program you mentioned about "slow tv". Seven hours watching the
scenery from the front of a train without commentary would be okay for a short
time. It reminded me of when we used to watch tv in the 1950's in England when
they didn't have enough programming to fill the time. We used to watch a
potters wheel or the ocean breaking on the rocks. I prefer to have something
with sound on the tv when I am lace making as I can follow the story and look
up if it sound exciting, especially if I know the voices of the characters.
Yes, I DO multi task, I just wish I could read at the same time as lace making
then I would be doing two of my favorite things.
The knitting feature followed the wool from the sheep shearing, carding,
spinning and then knitting a garment all in the same program. Not sure how
long that one was, could have been the 18 hour one!

[lace] Travel pillow

2017-05-09 Thread Janice Blair
Hi Irene,For the past few years I have purchased the 24" square builder foam
that is available from the IOLI convention co-hosts.  I take along a 42"
square of fabric that I use to cover the pad, just pinning it in place for
the week.  At the end of the classes, I use a serrated knife, that I take in
my checked bag, and cut the piece down to 9" wide and as long as I need for
the pricking, as this will fit into my large block pillow at home.  I use the
covering fabric to wrap the foam piece and the attached pricking and bobbins
securely for the journey home in my carryon bag, using elastic hair (alice)
bands to hold it in place.  No problems except that once home with all the
extra fabric folded under the foam, I might have to raise the level a little
for it to be the same height as my block pillow.  It is not too late to order
a foam piece from the registrar.  This foam is thicker than the 1" you are
considering.
I have made an apron for my small travel pillow which does have a fabric
apron. That apron does not give enough support when using the pillow on my
knees. I used a piece of foam board cut to the same shape as the fabric apron,
then I scored it so that it folded.  I covered the board with some plastic
shelf paper to reinforce the folded areas and it is small enough to travel
along with my pillow.
I have had it for years and any divider pins go into that rather than my lap.
Another time I used an ethafoam round pillow that I had already and I cut off
the top section so that it fit into my suitcase.  I took the cut off piece
with me and attached the two pieces back together with wooden skewers. I then
covered it with the original cover which had elastic running around it.  You
would just have to be careful not to put your pricking over the cut edge when
placing it on the pillow.
This year I am taking the Lier class and there is no way I can transport my
large floor standing frame so DH has made a table standing frame from pvc
pipe following directions gratefully received from Jo Ann Eurell.  The only
difference is we made mine from 1/2" pipe rather than the 1" she used.  Now
it fits into my suitcase because the corner fittings are smaller that the 1"
connectors.
Lacemakers are clever at adapting when necessary.

[lace] lappets

2017-02-09 Thread Janice Blair
I am working on my second adaptation of a lappet from the book about Thomas
Lester. I have managed to put a photo on Flickr in the Photo Stream. I thought
I was putting it in my album but it did not show up there. Maybe Sue can move
it for me. :-) Anyway, take a look. Holly Van Sciver did the pricking for it
from photos from the book as there are no prickings provided. Thankfully she
changed the baby giraffe birth sac that was between the giraffes legs into a
leaf and vine design.  The piece is close to 14 inches tall and I doubt I
would ever wear it on my head. It did win the Best of the Lace Division last
summer at the San Diego County Fair.
I am currently working on another adaptation of one of the ostrich lappets in
the same book. This one is bigger and wider. At the widest part I had on over
400 bobbins if you count all the gimp bobbins as well. I worked both pieces in
Egyptian 80/2 and enlarged them to 125% so that I could see what I was
doing. This one has a double plaited ground with lots of rolled tallies. I will
post a photo when it is finished. It will take ages to cut all the thrown back
threads and remove the pins. I hope to put it in the display at convention
this summer if it looks good enough.
I should ask my daughter to put it on my revamped website. Just looked and
realized it was not there.

My cat, thankfully, never goes on my lace pillow but she does like to sit with

my back. Occasionally she tries to squeeze up front but then she is pushed
off.
We have been having so much rain it is unbelievable. Luckily we live at the
top of the street and we are not in a flood or mud slide area. I believe it
has been declared that most of California is no longer in a drought and I can
see plenty of snow on the mountains in the distance. A great year for the
skiers but not so much for lace making. The gloomy days are so dark that it is
hard to see my pin holes on a cramped pillow full of bobbins. As I near the
end of the piece it will get more cramped because the design is an oval shape
so the work area is narrowing but still hundreds of bobbins on it.

worked today, I downloaded a poor photo of a piece I entered in the San Diego

glass which is why it is mounted with a background of Johnny Depp as the Mad
Hatter.  Got a Honorary Mention for that as my other piece won Best of

I did have a little trouble getting back to my own Yahoo mail account as it
